Charged fermions and strong cosmic censorship
It was recently shown that the Strong Cosmic Censorship conjecture might be violated for near-extremally-charged black holes in de Sitter space. Here, we extend our study to charged fermionic fields in the exterior of Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes. We identify three families of modes; one related to the photon sphere, a second related to the de Sitter horizon and a third which dominates near extremality. We show that for near-extremally-charged black holes there is a critical fermionic charge below which Strong Cosmic Censorship may potentially be violated. Surprisingly enough, as one approaches extremality even more, violation of Strong Cosmic Censorship may occur even beyond the critical fermionic charge. (C) 2019 The Author. Published by Elsevier B.V
Despite Praise: Techniques of Paradoxology and Paradoxography in the Work of Kyriakos Charalambides
Critics have often said that Kyriakos Charalambides’ poetry is hard and challenging even for the most cultivated and well-read reader. The author of the article examines the techniques of rhetoric style with which the poet orchestrates his inspirations: parentheses, stereotypical, corrective and introductory phrases, innuendoes, direct and indirect questions, comic scenes, etc.Critics have often said that Kyriakos Charalambides’ poetry is hard and challenging even for the most cultivated and well-read reader.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: The Permanent Campaign Prime Minister
This chapter discusses the political background of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and evaluates his permanent campaigning at a time of the Covid-19 crisis and the resulting economic one. In particular, it examines his communication strategy from the perspective of the three categories of the permanent campaign indicators (capacity building and strategy, paid and owned media as well as earned media). It finds that Mitsotakis has so far applied permanent campaigning, to a greater degree, than any of his predecessors and thus can be considered as the ‘permanent campaign prime minister’. Moreover, he has put emphasis on all three sets of this communication strategy: capacity building and strategy, paid and owned media as well as earned media. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG
The sustainable growth paradigm : implications for technology and policy
Thesis (S.M. in Technology and Policy)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, Technology and Policy Program, 2009.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 102-109).While some scholars continue to insist that the concept of sustainability is vague and unwieldy, this thesis seeks to explore multidimensional elements of sustainability and seeks to offer an integrative, transdisciplinary approach to policy design for its attainment. Sustainability and the related concepts of development, globalization, and economic and environmental justice are interwoven with technological, social and institutional change, and with trade as drivers of the transformation of industrial and industrializing societies. The discussion begins by an analysis of the dominant existing models of economic growth and innovation and advances to the effects of economic growth on sustainability. Included is an analysis of the limits of the GDP growth paradigm, the effects of growth on the developed and the developing world and the relationship between economic growth and ecological collapse. The focus of analysis then shifts from the domestic to the international. Trade and the International Financial System are examined both with respect to their primary theories and characteristics, but also in relation to their effects to sustainability. The discussion is then concluded by an examination of the different policy options and analytical tools that could be employed for a transition to a more sustainable economic model.by Kyriakos Pierrakakis.S.M.in Technology and Polic

Relationship of urine albumin excretion to markers of systemic inflammation in patients with essential hypertension
The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships between urinary albuminexcretion, expressed as the albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) with diverse markers ofinflammatory activation [high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), serum amyloid-Α(SAA), adiponectin, tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), interleukin-18 (IL-18) and solubleCD40 ligand (sCD40L)] in non-diabetic patients with essential hypertension. Moreover,we tried to determine the differences in demographic, laboratory and clinical parametersbetween the groups of microalbuminuric and normoalbuminuric hypertensives. The entire population consisted of 308 consecutive newly-diagnosed untreated patientswith essential hypertension stageI-II [203 άνδρες, μέση ηλικία=51 έτη, αρτηριακή πίεση(ΑΠ) ιατρείου=148/95 mmHg]. Based on the mean value of ACR from two nonconsecutivespot urine samples patients were divided into two groups: those withmicroalbuminuria (MA) (ACR=30-300 mg/g, n=58) and those with normoalbuminuria(ACR<30mg/g, n=250). Moreover, blood samples were collected for the determination ofthe metabolic profile and hs-CRP, SAA, adiponectin, IL-18, TNF-a and sCD40L levels.Microalbuminurics compared to normoalbuminurics were older (54±7 vs 49±7 years,p=0.035), had greater waist circumference (104.1±11.5 vs 99±11.3 cm, p<0.05), whiledid not differ regarding sex and body mass index (p=NS). Hypertensives with MAcompared to those without MA had higher levels of office systolic BP (152±14 vs145±14 mmHg, p<0.05), 24-h systolic systolic and diastolic BP (141±16 vs 131±12mmHg and 89±11 vs 83±6 mmHg, respectively, p<0.005). Moreover, microalbuminuricscompared to normoalbuminurics were characterized by higher levels of log hs-CRP(0.69±0.2 vs 0.13±0.36 mg/l, p<0.0001), log SAA (0.73±0.24 vs 0.5±0.28 mg/dl,152p<0.0001) and lower log adiponectin (0.81±0.16 vs 0.92±0.23 μg/ml, p<0.0001)independently of confounding factors, while did not differ regarding metabolic profile, renal function and levels of IL-18, TNF-a and sCD40L (p=NS). In multiple regressionanalysis model log hs-CRP (b=0.476, vsp<0.0001), 24-h systolic BP (b=0.318, p<0.0001)waist circumference (b=0.206, p<0.0001) and log adiponectin (b=-0.145, p=0.005) wereindependent predictors of albuminuria. In conclusion, non-diabetic hypertensive patients with MA are characterixed byincreased levels of subclinical inlflammatoey activation, as reflected by the highconcentrations of hs-CRP and SAA and the low adiponectin values. Moreover, theindependent association of ACR with hs-CRP, SAA and adiponectin underscore theclose interrelationship between low-grade inflammation and albuminuria in the settingof essential hypertensionΣκοπός της παρούσας μελέτης ήταν να διερευνηθεί η συσχέτιση της ΑΑΟ, εκφραζόμενηςως ο λόγος αλβουμίνης προς κρεατινίνη (Α/Κ), με δείκτες συστηματικής φλεγμονής[υψηλής ευαισθησίας C-αντιδρώσα πρωτεΐνη (hs-CRP), αμυλοειδές-Α (SAA),αντιπονεκτίνη (adiponectin), παράγοντας νέκρωσης όγκου-α (TNF-a), ιντερλευκίνη-18(IL-18) και διαλυτό σύνδεσμο CD40 (sCD40L) σε μη-διαβητικούς ασθενείς με ιδιοπαθήαρτηριακή υπέρταση (ΑΥ).
Renal denervation vascular effects: An “insider's” view
Currently, renal denervation (RDN) has proven its overall procedural and renal safety in registries and trials. Available data, suggest that vascular complications are rather scarce in modern studies using established neuromodulation catheters of different technologies and kidney parameters are mainly maintained stable overtime in RDN patients. Identification of the impact of energy delivery at vascular level by means of advanced methodologies such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a meaningful research tool. This accumulation of evidence on the acute and late effects of the procedure in the renal artery tissue especially when a new catheter is tested, as in the present work can further enhance our knowledge on the pathophysiology and clinical outcome of RDN
