Joan Dillon papers
Joan Kent Dillon (b. 1925) is a nationally known historic preservation activist, having served on the Board of Directors of the National Trust for Historic Preservation from 1980 to 1989 and the Smithsonian Institution from 1989 to the present. A long-time resident of Kansas City, Dillon began her involvement with historic theaters in 1974, when she purchased the Folly Theater in the city center. Over the next thirteen years she raised more than $5 million to renovate the former burlesque hall. Her activities with the Folly Theater led to her involvement with the League of Historic American Theaters (LHAT), on whose Board of Directors she served after 1978. Through her growing involvement with theaters, she met David Naylor, a photographer and author of two books on American movie theaters. Together they decided to pursue Dillon's longstanding idea of a book on nineteenth-century American theaters. In the period between 1994 and 1996, they traveled extensively, viewing, evaluating, and photographing theaters throughout the United States. The resulting book, American Theaters: Performance Halls of the Nineteenth Century, appeared in 1997. The papers focus exclusively on the research, preparation and publication of American Theaters: Performance Halls of the Nineteenth Century. The collection documents theaters included in the book, as well as theaters that were considered for inclusion but rejected. There are also a large number of photographs and slides of theaters documented in the files

Dear Dillon:

I.
Thank you for your letter of the seventh. I am cer¬ tain that Doug Dillon has been thinking along the lines of what aid we can give in fostering the development of trade between Japan and her neighbors.
r
Incidentally, one of nay friends here tells me that a new
air freight system is being set up which will insure
Japan's goods being delivered anywhere in the world
within a couple of days at a cost, when all things are
considered, not appreciably higher than freight ship-
naents. That presents another problena to the econonaists
but should stimulate Japan's industrial talents consider-

Dear Dillon:
You will find enclosed a memorandum which will tell you about the organization and projected activities of the National Republican Citizens Committee. The organization of this Committee results from discussions which Bill Miller, our Republican National Chairman, and I have had with representatives of those CITIZENS and VOLUNTEER Committees which participated in the national elections

from 1952 through 1960, and with the leaders of a number of other voluntary organizations which have developed during this same period.
I regard this as a very significant development and one that I believe holds great promise for the future of our Party« I have agreed to become a member and Honorary Chairman of this Citizens Committee and to help in its work so far as I can.
I hope you will become a Sustaining Member and as active as possible in its program. I shall be more than de¬ lighted if you will join in this great effort*

With warm regard.
