Nondestructive evaluation of residual stresses in nanostructured coatings by synchotron radiation:

    No full text
This thesis presents a strain mapping in nanostructure Al2O3/TiO2 ceramic coatings on metallic Titanium substrates by synchrotron radiation. The mapping is obtained under various boundary conditions (tension/compression loads, four-point bending, etc.) and is accomplished using high energy (deeply penetrating) synchrotron white radiation with photon energies up to 200 keV to perform high precision x-ray diffraction on small volumes (1 µm to a few cm), which are then integrated into high resolution 3D maps of the strain fields. Strain mapping in conventional micro-size ceramic coatings are performed for comparison. The underlining structural and functional parameters in processing of these coatings, which result in dramatic improvements in their performance, are discussed. The thesis also presents mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, yield strength, etc., which are deduced from energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD) strain mapping in conjunction with modeling.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Nazia Ikram Ahmed

This research study provides a quantitative analysis to examine the intricate relationship between employee management practices and the organizational contexts defined by Theories X, Y, and Z. Four locations in Sindh, Pakistan were used to gather data for the study. A thorough model that clarifies the connections between staff management techniques and the theoretical foundations of Theories X, Y, and Z was also built using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The study\u27s conclusions offer insightful information on the complex relationships that exist between organizational settings and personnel management techniques. Additionally, the model created using PLS software provides a comprehensive framework for comprehending how the ideas of Theories X, Y, and Z appear in actual employment practices, illuminating the consequences for performance, employee happiness, and organizational success. By providing a quantitative explanation of the complex interactions between theoretical paradigms and employee management, this research adds to the body of knowledge on organizational management and helps organizations looking to improve their workforce management strategies make well-informed decisions, and develop policies

Towards automatic configuration of access control

    No full text
Access control provide means to implement organizational security policies to both of its physical and electronic resources. To date, several access control mechanisms, including Role Based Access Control (RBAC) and Discretionary Access Control (DAC) have been proposed. Regardless of which security mechanism an organization adopts, once the system variables such as policies, roles, and authorizations are defined, continuous configuration management of these systems become necessary in order to ensure that the behavior of implemented system matches with the expected system behavior. In recent years, configuration errors in access control system have emerged as one of the key causes of system failure. Traditional access control system lacks the ability to anticipate potential configuration errors. Therefore, these systems fail to gracefully react to this problem. Configuration errors often occur either in the form of false positive or false negative authorizations. It is not trivial to manually identify such misconfigurations, and moreover, existingmethods of analyzing system configuration are not efficient in detectingmisconfigurations. Therefore, there is an acute need of better ways for automatic configuration of access control systems. This dissertation aims at developing efficient and automatic methodologies and tools for access control configuration management that are based on data mining technologies. Specifically, it addresses the following three research issues. The first research problem is based on using risk estimates for configuration management. There exist a number of situations in which specific user permission assignments based on the security policy cannot be a priori decidable. These may include emergency and disaster management situations where access to critical information is expected because of the need to share, and in some cases, because of the responsibility to provide information. This dissertation has proposed novel methodologies for dynamic computation of risk in such situations where preventing an access to a resource has more deleterious effect than granting it, if the underlying risk is low. Moreover, it has developed a model that facilitates risk-based access control in both DAC and RBAC cases. Also, in case of RBAC, it has developed a method to determine situational role for a user. Computational experiments performed on both synthetic and benchmark real datasets, even in the presence of noise, confirms the viability of the proposed approaches. The second issue is to investigate the configuration management problems that arise as a result of changes within a system or due to requests from users from collaborating organizations that do not have explicit access to resources. This dissertation has proposed to exploit attribute semantics of users to (semi)automate security configuration and management, and has proposed a methodology to derive credential requirements for roles having permission to access requested object, based on local access control policies using existing access control data. The proposed approach is based on well-known data mining method known as classification. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed method has outperformed the previously proposed approach to address this problem. Finally, the third research issue deals with automating the process of identifying and removing misconfigurations in RBAC and DAC. Towards this end, this dissertation has proposed approaches to automate the process of detection of exceptionally or erroneously granted or denied authorizations in access control data. These approaches are based on using multiple classifiers to identify anomalous assignments. An extensive experimental evaluation has been performed to demonstrate the accuracy and performance of the proposed approaches.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Nazia Bada

This survey covered 120 street vendors in Hyderabad. The data has been collected from both primary and secondary sources. The secondary data has been collected from research articles published in journals, and books, newspapers, and research reports published by various organizations. The findings of the study show that the street hawkers significantly contributed to the socio-economic uplift of the masses at a larger level. The street hawkers have very little capital to invest in their businesses

The waste collectors in Sindh, Pakistan: an exploratory study of the environment-friendly self-employment

    No full text
This study investigates how waste collectors use their work as a resource for establishing self-employment and their role in the country\u27s developing economy through waste reduction. They collect garbage to meet their basic needs but lack the self-care practices of the participants. It reflects on the workplace environment and attitudes toward health threats. They face many challenges of being perceived as second-class citizens, thus facing meagre social status. This descriptive study focused on qualitative research using observational techniques. The study also examines several aspects of formal and informal waste collection and recycling practices. Data were collected by using primary and secondary sources. Representatives of all scrap dealers and waste collectors in the target area were selected. The study found that Pakistan\u27s recycling industry is completely unorganized, unregulated, and has little support due to a lack of funding and systematic planning. Formally registered institutions only manage about 50 percent of Pakistan\u27s municipal waste. The other half is what informal entrepreneurs\u27 livelihoods depend on. Some poor people have no alternative to collecting, sorting, and selling valuable items. Their work is invaluable in environmental terms but not financially rewarding. It is also hazardous

Localization and subcellular association of Grapevine Pinot Gris Virus in grapevine leaf tissues

    No full text
Despite the increasing impact of Grapevine Pinot gris disease (GPG-disease) worldwide, etiology about this disorder is still uncertain. The presence of the putative causal agent, the Grapevine Pinot Gris Virus (GPGV), has been reported in symptomatic grapevines (presenting stunting, chlorotic mottling, and leaf deformation) as well as in symptom-free plants. Moreover, information on virus localization in grapevine tissues and virus-plant interactions at the cytological level is missing at all. Ultrastructural and cytochemical investigations were undertaken to detect virus particles and the associated cytopathic effects in field-grown grapevine showing different symptom severity. Asymptomatic greenhouse-grown grapevines, which tested negative for GPGV by real time RT-PCR, were sampled as controls. Multiplex real-time RT-PCR and ELISA tests excluded the presence of viruses included in the Italian certification program both in field-grown and greenhouse-grown grapevines. Conversely, evidence was found for ubiquitous presence of Grapevine Rupestris Stem Pitting-associated Virus (GRSPaV), Hop Stunt Viroid (HSVd), and Grapevine Yellow Speckle Viroid 1 (GYSVd-1) in both plant groups. Moreover, in every field-grown grapevine, GPGV was detected by real-time RT-PCR. Ultrastructural observations and immunogold labelling assays showed filamentous flexuous viruses in the bundle sheath cells, often located inside membrane-bound organelles. No cytological differences were observed among field-grown grapevine samples showing different symptom severity. GPGV localization and associated ultrastructural modifications are reported and discussed, in the perspective of assisting management and control of the disease. © 2017 The Author(s
