Feminine Archetypes in the School Stories of Women Writers : A Study of Sukhalata Rao and Ashalata Singha/ লেখিকাদের স্কুলকেন্দ্রিক গল্পের মেয়েলি ছাঁচ : সুখলতা রাও এবং আশালতা সিংহ
If we look at the stories written for children and teenagers in Bengali, we can understand that most of them are somehow related to school. In Bengali, we can call such stories ‘Schooler Galpo’. The experiences that the storytellers have while observing the familiar environment are expressed through their creative works, brightened by the light of their own understanding and consciousness; but within the environment lies the rhetoric of power. As a result, the voice of women is suppressed next to the dominant patriarchal accent. In practice, the language of protest creates a language that is actually just a counter-narrative. But the women writer’s language is also trapped in the patriarchal narrative. We have to find the own voice of women’s personal space. We have tried to understand the feminine mold of school stories from the stories written by Sukhalata Rao and Ashalata Singha. Just as ‘Barnaparichay’ of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar not only introduces children to the alphabet, but also makes the duties and non-duties of life clear, similarly, Kamini Sundari Devi’s ‘Bamabodhika’ mainly taught morals along with alphabetical lesson to girls. The timid, fearful, and gawky women shown in ‘Bamabodhika’ became the ideals for the main characters of women writers of later period. Even a review of school stories will show the dichotomous division of boy’s and girls’ food habits, clothing, language, habits, thoughts, and cognitions. The language and behaviour of the female characters created by the two writers are different from the male characters they wrote. For example, the life style of Ranu in Sukhalata Rao’s story ‘Bhalo Pari O Mondo Pari’ is different from the male characters namely ‘Buddhiman’, ‘Bittoban’, and ‘Chittotosh’ in the same writer’s story ‘Tin Bandhu’. Although, in Ashalata Singha’s story ‘Chhera Moja’, Mini is the best student in class, the author has perfected her by transforming into the perfect wife of a man who returned from England. Although, there is a hint of the author’s own voice in the story at some places. In the content of the story ‘Subodhini’, author Ashalata has shown her uniqueness. It is not a school story, but the story of entering into school is important for girls in colonial India, Ashalata has made it understand. The language style and narration of the women authors are also different.  
Estimation of phytochemical constituents and antioxidant potential of underutilized ethnobotanically important wild edible fruits of Manipur
478-488This paper presents investigation on ethnobotany, phytochemicals constituents and antioxidant potential of six selected wild edible fruits (WEFs) of Manipur. Ethnomedicinal data collected through a semi-structured questionnaire shows that there are different therapeutic possibilities of WEFs, practised by the local people. Phytochemical estimation observed Rhus semialata was the most acidic fruit (4.67 pH) with 0.73% of titratable acidity and lowest solubility (20%). A strong negative and significant association was observed between pH and titratable acidity, r = -0.900, pSpondias pinnata>Rhus semialata>Elaeocarpus floribundus>Microcos paniculata>Vangueria spinosa. The fruit samples exhibit diverse antioxidant activity indicating an active response to the radical. The finding specifies the overall primary and secondary metabolites, and antioxidant properties of these underutilized wild edible fruits and validates their therapeutic values and prospects. Value-added food products of the WEFs plant species may be promoted within and outside the state while assuring nutrient content and availability of products. Moreover, it will help improve the economic conditions of local people, aiding financial condition by selling fruits and value-added products

An application of blended amendments in monsoon rice field
Abstract Introduction Rice is the main food crop of the world, and the cultivation of rice crop during the monsoon season is hard due to the rain-induced waterlogging. Apart from this, farmers in north-eastern regions of India often implement improper crop management leading to poor yields. Thus, the development of suitable management practices under improved varieties of rice become essential for increasing rice productivity, improving soil quality status and reducing methane emission. Methods The aim of the study was to investigate the variation in soil properties, crop growth and methane emission under the application of an inorganic fertiliser as well as its mixtures with both inorganic and plant materials. In such an attempt, a field-based experiment was conducted with the rice variety Chandrama during 2015 in slightly acidic soil having sandy loam texture. Five amendments, i.e. NPK and NPK, blended separately with magnesium sulphate, fresh neem (Azadirechta indica) leaves, used tea (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) leaves, and fresh karanj (Pongamia glabra) leaves were used for the study with four replications each. Results Application of NPK separately with the leaves of neem, tea and karanj separately at the onset of monsoon season markedly affected the soil porosity and the water-holding capacity of the soil. However, in comparison with sole NPK fertilisation, a significance increase in soil organic matter accumulation (2.48 ± 0.10%) was seen only for karanj-blended NPK while magnesium sulphate-blended NPK showed the lowest methane emission (0.30 ± 0.01 mg/m2/h). The rice plants grown on karanj-blended NPK soil showed the highest yield (0.560 ± 0.01 kg/m2) among the five amendments. Conclusions It was found that only the karanj leaves blended NPK could significantly improve the soil organic matter and increase rice yield without intensifying methane emission, while magnesium sulphate blended with NPK could significantly reduce methane emission in the flooded rice paddy soil at 0.5 t/ha application level but exhibit lower rice yield
Perceptions and linkage of indigenous community in conservation of sacred natural sites in Assam, Northeast India
316-323Sacred natural sites are one of the most valuable ecosystems preserving the cultural integrity of different communities worldwide. Out of different sacred natural sites, sacred groves have acquired more importance due to spiritual theories and religious ethics. There are many sacred groves with diverse historical importance which are not yet been studied. The current study aimed to report the documentation and prominence established by the local community for the conservation of sacred groves in Assam during 2015 to 2017. Sacred groves were inventoried across the state, wherein sacred plants, people's perceptions, and anthropogenic disturbances were studied. Assam is a culturally rich state, and various ethnic communities conserved a total of 282 sacred groves covering an area of 672.48 ha, distributed within 23 AMSL to 955 AMSL. 83 tree species belonging to 68 genera and 38 families were listed, out of which 15 sacred trees were protected in the vicinity of the sacred groves. We observed a significant relationship between the cultural belief system and anthropogenic disturbances in the sacred groves, χ2 (1, N= 768) =50.032, p<0.001. The record on the degree of anthropogenic disturbances revealed 51% of wood collection from sacred groves, followed by browsing/grazing activities (38%) and fire frequency of 11%. The result of our study has widened the perception of the need to conserve the sacred groves not merely for aesthetic but also for community implications intended for ecological significance

Phytochemical estimation observed Rhus semialata was the most acidic fruit (4.67 pH) with 0.73 % of titratable acidity and lowest solubility (20%). A strong negative and significant association was observed between pH and titratable acidity, r = -0.9, p < 0.01, while a moderate positive relationship between titratable acidity and solubility, r = 0.59, p < 0.01 and no significant relationship was observed between pH and solubility. The calorific value was found within the range of 198.48 - 458.59 kcal/100g. The phytochemical content was foremost in Phyllanthus emblica, including the antioxidant potential and vitamin C, except for tannin. Meanwhile, tannin was found highest in Spondias pinnata (67.63 ± 0.97 mg/g). Least total phenolic and tannin content was recorded in Vangueria spinosa. P. emblica shows the highest reducing capacity in both the analysis, i.e., total in-vitro antioxidant activity (159.06 ± 4.10 AAE mg/g) and FRAP assay (43.16 ± 0.05 AAE mg/g). In in-vitro antioxidant activity, Elaeocarpus floribundus (13.26 ± 0.10AAE mg/g) shows the lowest antioxidant activity. The inhibition percentage of the DPPH assay was in order of Phyllanthus emblica > Spondias pinnata > Rhus semialata > Elaeocarpus floribundus > Microcos paniculata > Vangueria spinosa. The fruit samples exhibit diverse antioxidant activity indicating an active response to the radical. The finding specifies the overall primary and secondary metabolites, and antioxidant properties of these underutilized wild edible fruits and validates their therapeutic values and future prospects.
