Georg Hermann.
The internationally renowned author of numerous novels, essays, and articles, Georg Hermann, was born as Georg Borchardt in Berlin-Friedenau on October 7, 1871, the youngest of six children in a well-established Jewish family. Later in life he used his father’s first name Hermann as his surname when writing. Contrary to the expectations for a young man from a reputable family, Hermann did not pursue the Abitur exam in a Gymnasium (secondary school), but instead received a one-year certificate in 1890, leaving school to become an apprentice salesman at a tie company. From 1896 until 1899 he worked in the Statistical Office of Berlin, at the same time attending literature and art history lectures at the University of Berlin. Afterwards he worked as a freelance writer and art critic.His first book, 'Spielkinder', was published in 1896, but he did not become well-known until 1906, with the publication of 'Jettchen Gebert', followed by its sequel, 'Henriette Jacoby'. These novels told the story of the life of a young woman living in Jewish Berlin during the Biedermeier period of the 1820s and 1830s. Politically active, Georg Hermann was also a member of the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens.Having become known for his pacifist tendencies through his writing, and because of his Jewish heritage, Georg Hermann and his family fled to Holland shortly after the burning of the Reichstag in 1933. Although the rest of his family was saved from the Nazis after their occupation of Holland in 1943, Georg Hermann was sent to the Dutch concentration camp of Westerbork. DFT Study of GaN Clusters Decorated with Rh and Pt Nanoparticles for the Photochemical Reduction of CO2
Obtaining chemicals and fuels from the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) represents a promising strategy to mitigate the growing greenhouse gas emissions. Because of the high thermodynamic stability of CO2, the real challenge is the development of efficient and selective catalysts. In this regard, photocatalysis is receiving much attention because it exclusively relies on energy input from sunlight. Gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors can effectively promote the CO2reduction. Moreover, the addition on the semiconductor surfaces of transition metal nanoparticles, such as Rh and Pt, can further improve the efficiency and selectivity toward CH4rather than CO, along with improving the optical absorptions in the visible spectral region by decreasing the wide band gap of the pristine GaN. Water is commonly used as an atomic hydrogen donor for CO2reduction. In this regard, GaN was previously reported as an excellent photocatalyst for water oxidation. Here, we present a density functional theory investigation based on a cluster model approach to shed light on the effective role of the metal nanoparticles on the CO2reduction in the presence of water. Our calculations have underlined a more favored dissociative adsorption of H2O with respect to CO2. Moreover, while the dissociative H2O adsorption on the GaN surface occurs without the involvement of the Rh metal, the role of the metal center in activating the CO2molecule is found to be crucial. Highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps and calculated absorption spectra have shown that the presence of the adsorbed nanoparticles not only intensifies the absorption next to the UV region but also extends it to all visible regions. Particularly, while the presence of Rh exhibits a stronger light absorption property in the visible region, enhanced in the blue-green region, Pt nanoparticles have a clear red-shift effect
Insights into the mechanistic CO2 conversion to methanol on single Ru atom anchored on MoS2 monolayer
Single atom catalysts (SACs) have received great attention due to their promising catalytic activity and sustainability. In this regard, the catalytic activity toward CO2 conversion reaction can be efficiently improved by the addition of single transition metal anchored on the 2D MoS2 monolayer. In this work, we explore the potential utilization of Ru@MoS2 as a promising SAC for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) by using first-principles simulations. The stability of the so-formed SAC was evaluated in terms of binding energy, and the reaction paths leading to the production of CO and methanol was investigated. Our results show the great potential of Ru@MoS2 as SAC for the CO2 conversion to methanol as the main product, and contribute to shed light on the complex reaction mechanism aiming at the development of more efficient catalytic systems

Dinuclear Ruthenium(II)-Pyrrolide Complexes Linked by Different Organic Units as PDT Photosensitizers: Computational Study of the Linker Influence on the Photophysical Properties*
A new family of bis[pyrrolyl Ru(II)] triad scaffolds, consisting of two [Ru(bpy)2]2+ centers separated by a variety of organic linkers, has been recently reported as efficient compounds for in vitro photodynamic therapy (PDT). Among all the complexes, the one carrying the pyrenyl group in the organic linker, namely 4 h, has emerged as an extremely potent photosensitizer for in vitro PDT. Here, we present a computational study based on both DFT and TDA-TDDFT methods, to investigate the photochemical properties of this promising complex. In order to evaluate the influence of the organic chromophore on the photochemical properties, our investigation was further extended to the complex 4 e, whose linker includes the benzothiadiazole group, which has yielded the longest-wavelength absorption maxima overall (but with a reduced intensity compared to 4 h). He is best known as a master etcher, lithographer and early Zionist. He studied for five years at the Berlin Academy and in 1908 wrote Die Kunst des Radierens (The Art of Etching), while mentoring artists such as Marc Chagall, Max Liebermann and Lesser Ury. His art was included in an exhibition at the Fifth Zionist Congress and he helped establish the religious Zionist movement called Mizrachi. Struck was an Orthodox Jew but believed that culture and religion could thrive cooperatively in Israel. He immigrated to Haifa where he created an artists' community and participated in the development of the Tel Aviv Museum and the Bezalel art school in Jerusalem. He died in 1944.digitizedDigital imag

He was admitted to the bar in Frankfurt in 1928. In 1933 he was disbarred and no longer allowed to practice law.
