Climate in Transition: Plants in Transition
We are living through a dramatic change in the world‘s climate. Butwhat does that mean for wild plants and animals? Do they standany chance at all of adapting to changing environmental conditionsin so short a time?In his lecture, Detlef Weigel will first explain the basics of evolutionaryresearch, including why evolution is always about compromise inorder to balance contradictory demands. He will then move on to hisown work and discuss predicting if and how plants might survive inthe climate of the future. Finally, Mr Weigel will briefly discuss hownew methods of genome editing may make it possible to modify cropsto withstand the rapid change in our climate. One important conclusion is that species should not be viewed asa rigid entity, but that their genetic diversity – and the limits of theirintra-species diversity – must be taken into account
Weigel 20 years ZMBP 0919
A presentation that I gave on the occasion of the ZMBP https://uni-tuebingen.de/fakultaeten/mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliche-fakultaet/fachbereiche/zentren/zmbp/zmbp/ 20 year anniversary on September 26, 2019. I discussed how genome editing can help address current challenges of feeding the world well and mitigating consequences of climate change
