α-Amylase Aspergillus oryzae Immobilized on Modified Expanded Perlite
The α-amylase from Aspergillus oryzae was immobilized covalently onto expanded perlite (EP) and modified EP by treatment with TiO2 (EP-TiO2), dye HE3B (EP-HE3B) polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-hydrazide (EP-PET) and magnetite (EP-magnetite). The modified EP was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The supports were functionalized with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and glutaraldehyde (GA). The optimum pH for free and immobilized α-amylase was 5.5. Temperature of maximum activity for free enzyme and immobilized enzyme on EP-HE3B was 50°C. The immobilized enzyme in EP-APTES this value was 55°C. The immobilized α-amylase in EP-APTES and EP-HE3B-APTES exhibited better thermostability than free enzyme. The immobilized derivatives showed moderate operational stability by retaining 50% of initial activity after seven successive reuses.Fil: Rodriguez, J.. Borane-Tetrahydrofurane Complex Reduction of Nickel and First Transition Metals in Tetrahydrofurane Media: Controllable Chemistry Leading to Nanoscale Metal and Metal Boride Particles
Nickel borides doped with transition metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn) MNiB, 4% w/w respect to Ni were prepared by chemical reduction of nickel and metallic salts in methanol solution with borane-tetrahydrofurane (BH3-THF) complex obtained in aprotic solvent (THF anhydrous). Different techniques were used to characterize these materials. The MNiB amorphous structure was verified by XRD. Thermal treatment in N2 shows Ni˚, Ni2 Band NiO phases. Spongy-morphology was evident by SEM studies in all cases. XPS and TEM show that doped and non-doped nickel boride was present as Ni˚ in metallic state as principal phase and nickel alloying with boron was observed in minor quantities. The oxidation stability, magnetic susceptibility and catalytic effect are correlated with parameters of each dopant metal.Fil: Acosta, Delicia Ester. Surface modifications of Volcanic Glasses (Perlites) by water vapor
Hydrothermal treatments on expanded volcanic glasses (perlites) were studied. The main objective of this paper is to obtain an activated surface able to interact with specific chemical substances. The above mentioned treatment consists on exposing the glass surface to water vapor at temperatures over 250°C at the correspondent vapor pressure during different periods of time and for different size of particles. The glass surface modifications were studied by IR, DTA-TG and adsorption techniques. The grade of surface activation was tested by studying the chemical interaction with polysiloxane polymers.Fil: Abalos, Raúl Mauro. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Green synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite prepared by hydrothermal treatment of perlite: Effect of the chemical composition and characterization of the product
We studied the influence of the chemical composition of the starting synthesis gel (SiO2/Al2O3, H2O/SiO2, amount of seed and pH) on the preparation of ZSM-5 zeolite by hydrothermal treatment of expanded perlite. Gels with molar compositions of SiO2/Al2O3 = 20–55 and H2O/SiO2 = 25–45, formed at pH values varying from 10.1 to 10.5, produced ZSM-5 zeolite, crystallizing at 453 K for 24 h in a seeded system. Compared with the conventional autoclave treatment, this method avoids the use of environmental-toxic organic structure direct- ing agents. The highly crystalline ZSM-5 zeolite obtained was characterized employing a variety of analytical techniques, including X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), infrared studies of pyridine sorption, 27Al MAS NMR, 29Si MAS NMR and thermogravimetric analysis. At pH values of 13.0 and 13.3, the MFI phase changed to Phillipsite and Analcime, with intermediate formation of amorphous phase at pH 12.0, rearranging the 5–5–1 elements into S4R and S6R units. It was found that the use of an amorphous and low-cost silicoaluminate as starting material can lead, through an inexpensive methodology, to a highly valuable microporous material with many potential applications.Fil: Corregidor, Pablo Fernando. Effects of Preparation Methods of Organoclays with Polyvinyl Alcohol in their Compatibility with HDPE. Thermal Stability
In this paper, the effect of polyvinyl alcohol addition on organoclay obtained by in situ polymerization and subsequent alcoholysis of polyvinyl acetate is studied. The incorporation of the monomer is carried out following two procedures. The first is the incorporation of the monomer by direct contact between the monomer and the organoclay. The second procedure involves a first step of impregnating the organoclay with propyl alcohol and the subsequent incorporation of the monomer. Both procedures consist of the polymerization in situ via a free radical mechanism. PVA modified clays showed substantial improvements in thermal properties with respect to the organoclay (MMTHDTMA), corresponding to the greater stability to clay obtained by direct contact with the monomer, PVAMMT/HDTMA (VA). The clays prepared by both methodswere incorporated into a HDPE matrix by melt blending, to study the effect of the method of preparing the organoclay with PVA in the polymer/clay compatibility and the effect on their thermal properties. The material characterization techniques were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (TG, DTG, DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show a clear improvement in the HDPE thermal properties with the addition of organoclays containing PVA and allow a discussion of effect of preparation on compatibility and improved thermal properties.Fil: Carrera, María Celeste. Improving barrier properties of HDPE using PVA as clay modifier
In this work it was prepared nanocomposites of high density polyethylene (HDPE) with different loads of modified organoclay with polyvinylalcohol (PVA). Modified organoclay was obtained by in situ polymerization of vinyl acetate with an organoclay and the nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending. The structure and morphology of nanocomposites were studied by XRD, SEM and TEM. The heat stability was measured by TGA and DSC. The barrier properties were evaluated by testing of cyclohexane pervaporation and the surface properties were obtained by determination from the contact angle using three solvents at ambient atmosphere. TEM results showed the different types of nanocomposite structures that were obtained with clay layers in the polymer matrix depending on the load of clay incorporated into the polymer matrix. The permeation experiments confirmed that the barrier properties evaluated by cyclohexane pervaporation were remarkably improved and increased in the thermal resistance for HDPE/ organoclay modified with PVA materials compared with pristine HDPE. Results from all studies showed that the addition of modified organoclay has changed the macroscopic properties of nanocomposites, as compared to that pure HDPE. This can be attributed to the different interaction of PVA with HDPE/filler.Fil: Carrera, María Celeste. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. The effect of mesoporosity in the reaction of vinyl acetate and isoamyl alcohol catalyzed by H-ZSM-5 zeolites based on natural Perlite
Diverse ZSM-5 zeolites having a dual porosity and different acidic properties have been prepared using natural Perlite as source of SiO2 and Al2O3. Two traditional methodologies were selected to generate hierarchical porosity in the parent ZSM-5: (1) soft templating approach to produce an ordered micro-mesoporous material (H-ZSM-5/MCM-41) and (2) different duration of alkaline treatment for the generation of intra-crystalline mesoporosity (H-ZSM-5-MS-x, x = 30, 60 and 90). Surface acidity and accessibility indexes were determined by adsorption of pyridine and 2,6-lutidine. The catalytic activity was evaluated in the reaction of vinyl acetate and isoamyl alcohol which produces isoamyl acetate and acetaldehyde diisoamyl acetal by transesterification and ketalization reactions, respectively. Isoamyl acetate has been selectively produced as a consequence of an adequate combination of Brønsted acidity and accessibility, thus H-ZSM-5/MCM-41 and H-ZSM-5-MS-60 presented enhanced catalytic activity and selectivity compared to the parent H-ZSM-5.Fil: Corregidor, Pablo Fernando.
Fil: Ramirez, Norma. Isoamyl acetate preparation from reaction of vinyl acetate and Isoamyl alcohol catalyzed by H-ZSM-5 zeolite: a kinetic study
Microporous H-ZSM-5 zeolite having good crystallinity and with the presence of Brønsted acid sites exclusively, was prepared by hydrothermal treatment of Expanded Perlite. The as-prepared H-ZSM-5 was used as heterogeneous catalyst for the reaction between vinyl acetate and isoamyl alcohol, as a greener alternative for the traditional preparation of isoamyl acetate. In this reaction, isoamyl acetate was generated by an acyl nucleophilic substitution mechanism, mediated by an acetylated zeolite complex, while acetaldehyde diisoamyl acetal has been produced as a secondary product due to a nucleophilic addition to acetaldehyde carbonyl carbon. The reaction was studied under different alcohol/ester molar ratio, supporting a second order kinetics when working under excess of one reactant. Moreover, an Eley-Rideal kinetic model has been suggested for a reaction mechanism of five steps, involving the ketalization of isoamyl alcohol and acetaldehyde as a parallel reaction that competes with transesterification.Fil: Corregidor, Pablo Fernando.
