    Probing the mechanism of neutrinoless double-beta decay in multiple isotopes

    A large experimental program is being mounted to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay over the next decade. Multiple experiments using different target isotopes are being prepared to explore the whole parameter space allowed for inverted-ordered light neutrinos, and have the potential to make discoveries in several other scenarios, including normal-ordered light neutrinos and other exotic mechanisms. We investigate to what extent long-range and exotic short-range contributions may be distinguished by combining measurements of the decay half-life across isotopes in the framework of a global Bayesian analysis. We demonstrate how measurements in two isotopes will constrain the parameter space up to a two-fold degeneracy, and how a further measurement in a third isotope removes such a degeneracy. We also discuss the impact of uncertainties and correlations in nuclear matrix element calculations. Our work motivates an experimental program measuring neutrinoless double-beta decay in more than one isotope, as this would break parameter degeneracies and advance our understanding of particle physics beyond the Standard Model

    The SuperNEMO experiment is being designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. Its experimental technique of tracking and calorimetry provides the means to discriminate different underlying mechanisms for neutrinoless double beta decay by measuring the angular and energy distributions of electrons. The results of a study by the SuperNEMO Collaboration and F.     Network Dynamics and Correlated Spikes

    Oscillatory neuronal responses have been suspected to reveal assembly formation via synchronization. We analyse these data in terms of a hidden-state model, the parameters of which are estimated directly from experimental spike trains. The model characterizes the excitation dynamics of the network which is reflected by the stochastic activity of individual observed neurons. Our approach reproduces the spike dynamics observed in cat visual cortex and predicts the cross-correlations of units which belong to the same assembly

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

In particular, name disambiguation is required to allow accurate publication lists, citation counts and impact measures to be determined. Using self-citation, co-authorship and document source analyses, AKTiveAuthor clusters papers, achieving precision of 0.997 and recall of 0.818 over a test group of eight surname clusters
