Investigation of the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the undergraduate student population within the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University
Iowa State University (ISU) provides resources for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI-B) to provide students with a comfortable academic home regardless of their demographics or prior experiences. The objective of this study was to investigate undergraduate students’ DEI-B perspectives in the Department of Animal Science at ISU. One survey instrument was developed containing 14 questions that covered demographics, feelings of inclusion, comfort-seeking tools, and ways to improve DEI-B. Answer choices were either multiple choice, 1 to 5 sliding scale, or a specified text sliding scale. Eligible participants were undergraduate students enrolled in Animal or Dairy Science (n = 974). Demographics and comfort-seeking tools will be presented descriptively. Inclusion at the start and after 2 yr were compared using six different linear models. A variable was deemed significant if the P-value was ≤ 0.05. A total of 383 students (88% of total respondents) completed 50% or more of the inclusion questions. Seniors had the highest response rate. More students reported coming from a rural background. Primary species of interest was companion animals. There were no observed differences in feelings of inclusion in classes, with peers, or with faculty for hometown, admission type, ethnic group, and first generation when students started (P ≥ 0.067). There was a difference for primary species of interest (P ≤ 0.011) and with female students feeling less included (P ≤ 0.039). There were no observed differences after 2 yr in classes, with peers, or with faculty for classification year, admission type, or first generation (P ≥ 0.088). Suburban students felt the least included in classes compared to rural and urban students (P ≤ 0.036). Female students felt less included in all three categories (P ≤ 0.017). The majority of students reported having companion animal experience but almost half reported having no experience with livestock prior to ISU. A total of 51% of students said they never considered transferring to another major and 48% indicated that they plan to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. A total of 75% of students felt inclusion could be improved by creating more hands-on opportunities and 60% suggested the department provide more study space. Iowa State University Department of Animal Science Undergraduate Teaching Update
For the first time in eleven years, undergraduate student enrollment in the Animal Science department decreased slightly. A total of 1,078 undergraduate students were enrolled as Animal Science, Dairy Science and General Pre-Veterinary Medicine majors fall semester 2017. Placement numbers remain high, with over 97% of graduates either entering graduate or professional school or gaining employment within six months of graduation. Undergraduate student enrollment in the Department of Animal Science reached a record in 2016 with 1131 students.</p

Development of Educational Fact Sheets on Nutrition, Enrichment, and Assistance Animals to Enhance the Human Animal Bond
As of 2022, 90.5 million US families own a pet, but nearly 8 million animals are surrendered to shelters yearly despite this growing number of pet owners. This project aims to create science-based fact sheets to increase the bond between people and their pets. I began this process by identifying three issues in animal science that I am passionate about: assistance animals, raw diets, and environmental enrichment. I developed clear and concise fact sheets on these topics using information from reputable online sources, previous coursework, and personal experiences. Each sheet was then saved and sent for further review. The next step of this project is to compile a database of fact sheets to develop and launch the Department of Animal Science Companion Animal Outreach website. Further evaluations will be done to determine effectiveness by tracking the number of website visits and PDF downloads. It is the department’s goal to highlight Iowa State as a reliable information hub for the general public

The impact of an introductory animal handling course on undergraduate students who lack previous livestock handling experience
A majority of animal science undergraduates have limited livestock handling experience when they come to college. To address this issue, a course based on livestock handling, safety and welfare was implemented in the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University. This study aimed to 1) determine if the course was effective at improving the comfort level of a student while handling livestock and 2) to identify demographic factors that contributed to student performance in the course. The course was delivered as an 8-week, lecture-laboratory format. Each semester, a pre-course survey and pre-course exam were administered during the first class period (N=87). The survey collected self-reported demographic information, prior livestock handling experience, and comfort level by specie. The exam tested the prior knowledge of each student. At the semester conclusion, a post-course survey and post-course exam were given to determine if the course was effective at improving comfort and knowledge levels of each student, respectively (N=75). Students from farm backgrounds outscored urban students by 5.56 ± 2.96% on the pre-course exam (P=0.06). Cumulative grade point average at the time of the course (GPA) had a role in the pre-exam score (P=0.003) while gender, semester, involvement in 4H or FFA, and high school or collegiate judging were not factors in the pre-exam score (P>0.10). Background and student rank did not have an effect on the post-course exam score (P=0.96 and P=0.58, respectively).
