The Voice of Denver Sports
Everyone was talking about the Denver Broncos this season. UND Communication grad, Mark Johnson \u2792, is discussing every last detail live with the Broncos Radio Network. This season has been crazy! said Johnson, Sports Director for Newsradio 850 KOA Denver. I visited the guys in the locker room a few times a week. It was really fun.
Mark works for monster-signal radio station 850 KOA Denver. We broadcast in three countries and are heard around the world, said Johnson. KOA is the exclusive station of the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies and Colorado University Buffs, where he is the play-by-play announcer for football and men\u27s basketball.
As Sports Director, Johnson oversees one of the largest radio spots departments in the nation. He helps to manage all three team accounts, hosts shows and news reports on various KOA radio shows, and will frequently drop in on the Bronco\u27s and Rockies live broadcasts. He has transitioned into television work, where he does interviews and news reports for Altitude Sports Entertainment, a regional cable network shown throughout the Rocky Mountain Region.
It All Started At UND
Exciting games isn\u27t something new for Johnson, who began his college career playing basketball for Minot State in Minot, ND. His love for sports continued at UND, where he transferred his junior year. As a student, Mark worked at local radio station Magic 96 where he developed a love for broadcast. My favorite memories from UND are being a spectator. I grew up a fan, going to basketball games at Hyslop Arena and listening to Jim Bollman call the games.
Mark\u27s broadcast dream became a post-graduation reality when he was offered a job at KNOX Radio in Grand Forks. He was a UND broadcaster for basketball and football from 1993-1994. I went full circle. Growing up in Grand Forks, being a big sports fan, attending UND, and then getting the opportunity to be the voice Fighting Sioux.
History In Sports
Since his work with UND Athletics, Mark has traveled all over the country calling games over the radio. Johnson was the play-by-play announcer for four years at Illinois State University and earned three Silver Dome Awards for best play-by-play broadcast in the state of Illinois. His career highlight and the gig that landed him the position with the Bronco\u27s Radio Network started at Syracuse University.
Mark was the proud \u27Voice of the Orange\u27 from 2002 -2004 and had the opportunity to broadcast the NCAA national championship basketball game in 2003. Johnson said, That was a chance of a lifetime. It was the highlight of my career, being heard around the country, broadcasting the Final Four, and the excitement of Syracuse and Carmelo Anthony.
Syracuse University is known for a strong broadcast program and has a tight alumni network. Mark beat out a large pool of Orange grads for that memorable role. It feels good to say I came from the UND Communication Program, and made it all the way to the Final Four championship game. It is possible to make it in this business!
A Life in Denver
It is safe to assume that Mark has made his way into the Denver spotlight. Off the radio, he is a family man, raising three children with his wife of 20 years, Susan. The couple met at UND, where Susan \u27Jacobson\u27 was also a Communication grad \u2792 and named Miss Potato Bowl
The Institutional Framework for Doing Sports Business: Principles of EU Competition Policy in Sports Markets
The competition rules and policy framework of the European Union represents an important institutional restriction for doing sports business. Driven by the courts, the 2007 overhaul of the approach and methodology has increased the scope of competition policy towards sports associations and clubs. Nowadays, virtually all activities of sports associations that govern and organize a sports discipline with business elements are subject to antitrust rules. This includes genuine sporting rules that are essential for a league, championship or tourna-ment to come into existence. Of course, ‘real’ business or commercial activities like ticket selling, marketing of broadcasting rights, etc. also have to comply with competition rules. Regulatory activities of sports associations comply with European competition rules if they pursuit a legitimate objective, its restrictive effects are inherent to that objective and proportionate to it. This new approach offers important orientation for the strategy choice of sports associations, clubs and related enterprises. Since this assessment is done following a case-by-case approach, however, neither a blacklist of anticompetitive nor a whitelist of procompetitive sporting rules can be derived. Instead, conclusions can be drawn only from the existing case decisions – but, unfortunately, this leaves many aspects open. With respect to business activities, the focus of European competition policy is on centralized marketing arrangements bundling media rights. These constitute cartels and are viewed to be anticompetitive in nature. However, they may be exempted from the cartel prohibition on efficiency and consumer benefits considerations. Here, a detailed list of conditions exists that centralized marketing arrangements must comply with in order to be legal. Although this policy seems to be well-developed at first sight, a closer look at the decision practice reveals several open problems. Other areas of the buying and selling behavior of sports associations and related enterprises are considerably less well-developed and do not provide much orientation for business. The author would like to thank Arne Feddersen and the participants of the 2nd European Conference on Sports Economics (German Sports University Co-logne, 2010) for valuable comments on earlier versions of this paper.Sports business, competition policy, sporting rules, centralized marketing, sports economics

'Active Sports' The First Step to Sporting Excellence?

Title: ‘Active Sports’: The First Step to Sporting Excellence?
Abstract
The aim of this research was to establish whether the Active Sports initiative (Sport England, 1999a) was an effective vehicle to facilitate progression in young children’s involvement in sport from grass roots towards elite performance. The Durham Sport Partnership in the North East of England was used as a case study to examine this. As part of a survey design, varied methodologies including registration forms, questionnaires and interviews were employed to generate qualitative and quantitative data to identify the numbers and profiles of the children and coaches engaged in Active Sports, as well as to compare their interpretation of the quality of their experiences during the Active Sports initiative in providing the first step to sporting excellence. The extent to which the scheme achieved the set equity targets and the influence of the initiative on the sporting involvement of the children were examined, along with the coaches’ interpretation of the impact of the scheme on the development of sporting talent. Analysis of the data revealed that participants and coaches found involvement in Active Sport a fulfilling and enjoyable experience that had positive impact on continued sports involvement and professional development respectively. However, the design of the activities and their relationship with any progression to elite sport was found to be questionable, as was the appropriateness of the inclusion of equity targets into an initiative designed to positively impact on elite sport. A significant contributory factor to this was the lack of knowledge the stakeholders had of the initiative, particularly the coaches. The organisation and fundamental structure of the Active Sport initiative in terms of the relationship between what sports the sporting infrastructure is able and willing to offer and what sports young people want to be involved in is questioned, as is the lack of integration of robust talent identification systems in the initiative. The conclusion is therefore drawn that the Active Sports initiative was not an effective vehicle to facilitate the progression in young children’s involvement in sport from grass roots towards elite performance
Contingent Valuation of Sports Stadiums and Arenas: Temporal Embedding and Order Effect
Using the Contingent Valuation Method, this paper estimates the value of public goods the National Football League’s Jaguars produce for Jacksonville, Florida, including the value of elevating Jacksonville to “major league” status and the value of improving racial relations. It also estimates the incremental value of public goods potentially produced by a National Basketball Association team in Jacksonville. The present value of public goods created by the Jaguars is 22.8 million. The results add to the growing body of CVM literature indicating that sports public goods probably cannot justify the large public expenditures on stadiums and arenas.
The evaluation of the need for sport agents for professional athletes in individual sports.
The purpose of this paper is to make the evaluation of the need for the agents to professional athlets in individual sports and to analyze the statue of contemporary sport and athlets. The work was based on a presumption, that the sports agent profession in Lithuania is in the initial stage and sport marked does not express a demand for professional agents. It was important to find out, what was the reasons for this situation and is there any medium, possible or necessary, to energise the work of sports agent. In order to validate the presuption the author set the task to define what sport agent profession means and to investigate his work in Lithuania. Moreover, to enquire is there any athlets in Lithuania who uses services of sport‘s agent and to find out what is athlet‘s personal attitude towards sport agent and their service. To investigate the market of sports agent these methods were chosen: analysis of scientific literature, questionnaire interview and statistic analysis. Respondent group was constituted of 94 olympis team members from first group candidate. Paper is made of four chapters. The first one gives a short characteristic and clasification of sport agent, describes the range of their practise in the case of personal sports. The second part describes the main functions of sport agent, like briefing, agency, consulting, also covenant of sport agent is given. The third chapter investigates activity of sport agent and presents practical analysis, which is based on questionnare of professional athlets. Author states that there is no big need for sport agent and prove the presumption. Explaining reasons are proposed: work of sport agent is a new phenomenon in Lithuania, therein there is no sufficient theoretical and practical background for agent instructing; furthermore athletes have very little information about sports agent practice and are not really interested in looking and using sports agent service due to the fact that a couch does most of the functions, connected to athlete needs, including agent function. Despite all the reasons mentioned above, the author sees a perspective in agent proffesion. Sympathetic external environment of Lithuania allow us to expect that if athlets get enough information about independent sports agent practise and realise all benefit than sports agent market will progress. It is important to emphasize that general economical, political and juristic situation of Lithuania is very important and imfluential to further development of independent sports agent
