Ambrogio Catarino's doctrine of covenantal solidarity with Adam and its influence on post-reformation reformed theologians
This dissertation explores the relationship between Ambrogio Catarino's doctrine of a pre-fall covenant between God and Adam and reformed theology's somewhat later, similar doctrine (the 'covenant of works'). Catarino first advanced the notion of a pre-fall covenant in 1532 in order to provide a rationale for humankind's participation in the guilt and corruption ensuing from Adam's first sin. He argued that the covenant, rather than some natural or real (biological) relationship to Adam, established humankind's moral solidarity with Adam, and thus humankind's culpability for Adam's transgression and experience of the penalties for the same.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
New insights into the failure mechanisms of horizontal plate anchors in clay during pull-out
Offshore wind developments are moving towards deep-water regions where energy is abundant, visual impact is minimised and the larger turbine sizes can make the energy production more cost-effective. One of the key challenges facing the industry is the development of reliable substructures. While fixed foundation systems are widely used for shallow-water (<60 m) developments, permanent anchors are seen as one of the most viable mooring solutions for floating structures in deep water. In the current study, the pull-out behaviour of square plate anchors in clay was investigated using large-displacement finite-element analysis. The anchor capacity and failure mechanism were considered for a range of embedment ratios and undrained shear strengths. Three distinct modes of anchor failure identified in previous studies were examined through the analysis of four descriptors including: the pull-out capacity of the anchor, the pull-out displacement required to mobilise this capacity, the energy absorbed by the anchor during pull-out and the variation of the pull-out capacity with respect to a normalised overburden pressure. Designing 21st Century Standard Ware: The Cultural Heritage of Leach and the Potential Applications of Digital Technologies
This practice-based research investigates the potential applications of digital manufacturing technologies in the design and production of hand-made tableware at the Leach Pottery. The methodology for the research establishes an approach grounded in my previous experience as a maker that is informed by an open, experimental, emergent, and responsive framework based on Naturalistic Inquiry.
A critical contextual review describes the cultural heritage of Leach which, for the purposes of the research, is developed through the Leach Pottery as a significant site, the historical production of the iconic Leach Standard Ware and the contemporary production of Leach Tableware. This is followed by an examination of Potter’s Tools in the Leach production environment, and a review of makers’ digital ceramic practice.
The contextual review is followed by an explication of ‘standards’ presented through visual lineages of Standard Ware and Leach Tableware to define ‘standard’ at a design (macro) level, followed by an examination of how ‘standard’ operates at a making (micro level) level. This chapter presents new knowledge in relation to defining the visual field of Leach Pottery tableware production and its standards of design.
A chapter focussed on practice presents the outcomes and analysis of my engagement with digital manufacturing technologies which resulted in the development of new tools to support Leach Tableware production and the interrogation of Leach forms, in different mediums, which led to the creation of Digital-Analogue Leach forms. The practice culminated in the design and development of new 21st century Standard Ware: a range of 9 forms, called Echo of Leach, that were developed by myself using digital and analogue methods: the designs were realised by myself, the Leach Studio, and a further four makers. The outcomes of the research were presented in a three month exhibition at the Leach Pottery in 2013.
The conclusions of the research draw on the key points raised in the analysis of the practice and relate these to the approaches to making pottery that are highlighted in the cultural heritage of Leach in the contextual review. These are also discussed in relation to ways in which these findings could be taken forward into development of knowledge about Standard Ware, especially in a broader studio pottery context
Mechanistic visco-elastic modeling of shear deformation and failure in internally-reinforced geosynthetic clay liners
2022 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Analysis and prediction of the shear behavior of a non-heat-treated needle punched geosynthetic clay liner (NHT NP GCL) have been conducted using a mechanistic model. A three-element Kelvin-chain model was employed to simulate the incremental loading of a rapid loading shear test. A performance analysis initially was conducted to evaluate variation in model parameters with respect to differences in physical properties of GCLs (i.e., peel strength) and experimental conditions (i.e., normal stress, temperature, creep shear stress). The optimized model parameters demonstrated sensitivity to the variation in internal and external factors and yielded empirical relationships that were carried forward to test model applicability for predicting time-to-failure for an internally-reinforced GCL. These data trends in combination with creep-test data were used to calibrate the creep deformation model. Time-to-failure predictions performed with the calibrated creep deformation model resulted in a percent error < 9%. A modified model-calibration procedure was developed to extend model applicability to stress conditions common in practice. The modified calibration procedure was used to predict NHT NP GCL creep deformation in a hypothetical landfill cover system. The time required for the projected deformation to surpass 3 mm exceeded one million years for all stress conditions evaluated, which suggested that the NHT NP GCL will not experience creep failure in the low-stress cover scenarios evaluated
