    New and reassessed species of Strobilanthes (Acanthaceae) in the flora of China

    Several problems in Strobilanthes Blume (Acanthaceae: Ruelliae) are clarified as a result of collaboration between Chinese and western botanists. Examination of pollen has permitted clear delimitation of four morphologically similar species, Strobilanthes szechuanica (Batalin) J. R. I. Wood and Y. F. Deng, S. labordei H. Lév., S. wakasana Wakasugi and Naruhashi and S. wilsonii J. R. I. Wood and Y. F. Deng, the latter described for the first time in this paper, although first collected more than a hundred years ago. A key is provided to help distinguish these species. The globose, echinulate pollen found in several species from China and Japan and assigned to the genus Championella by Bremekamp is shown by SEM photography to be distinct from other pollen hitherto regarded as the same. Three new species, S. abbreviata Y. F. Deng and J. R. I. Wood, S. lihengiae Y. F. Deng and J. R. I. Wood and S. vallicola Y. F. Deng and J. R. I. Wood are described. S. austinii C. B. Clarke ex W. W. Sm. is lectotypified to show that it is conspecific with S. lamiifolia (Nees) T. Anderson, a species demonstrating trans-Himalayan links. New combinations are made for four species as the authors recognize only a single genus, Strobilanthes within the Strobilanthinae as defined by Bremekamp. S. gongshanensis Tsui and S. aenobarba W. W. Sm. are shown to be only varieties of S. inflata T. Anderson. Illustrations are provided for all new species. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London

    Morphodynamics at the Coastal Zone in the Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea

    Morphogenetic processes of the Yellow River Delta and the Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea, China, have to be described by the interrelation of riverine sediment supply, relative sea level change and the effects of wind driven waves and nearshore currents. The research area is regarded a natural laboratory of the development of river dominated coastal zone with interfering natural and anthropogenic forcing factors. As well for the historical hindcast as for future projections of the morphogenetic coastal processes the Dynamic Equilibrium Shore Model (DESM) can be applied. This model generalizes the standard Bruun rule model and generates Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) scenarios on decadal to centennial time scales for the geological past and future. The basic concept is a dynamic equilibrium coastal profile evolution in adaption to the sediment budget in a spatially three-dimensional domain. By adding parameters to account for sediment mass contribution from riverine sediment flux, the DESM can be used to explore coastal morphological equilibrium states responding to sediment budget changes for river-dominated coastal zones. For the parameterization historical maps of the southern Bohai Sea have been applied to reconstruct paleo-coastlines for the 19th century for the comparison with a modern DEM. Gauge measurements provided the data for an estimation of trends in sea level change for the Laizhou Bay on the decadal scale. Modern sea level rise together with reduced riverine sediment supply caused by anthropogenic activities such as damming up-streams may change the depositional environment at the Yellow River Delta and related areas of the Laizhou Bay from river dominated (progrational) to wave dominated (regressive) environment

    (Ti,Al)N Film On Normalized T8 Carbon Tool Steel Prepared By Pulsed High Energy Density Plasma Technique

    Under optimized operating parameters, a hard and wear resistant ( Ti,Al)N film is prepared on a normalized T8 carbon tool steel substrate by using pulsed high energy density plasma technique. Microstructure and composition of the film are analysed by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Hardness profile and tribological properties of the film are tested with nano-indenter and ring-on-ring wear tester, respectively. The tested results show that the microstructure of the film is dense and uniform and is mainly composed of ( Ti,Al)N and AlN hard phases. A wide transition interface exists between the film and the normalized T8 carbon tool steel substrate. Thickness of the film is about 1000 nm and mean hardness value of the film is about 26GPa. Under dry sliding wear test conditions, relative wear resistance of the ( Ti,Al)N film is approximately 9 times higher than that of the hardened T8 carbon tool steel reference sample. Meanwhile, the ( Ti,Al)N film has low and stable friction coefficient compared with the hardened T8 carbon tool steel reference sample

    Deep learning for predicting immunotherapeutic efficacy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients: a retrospective study combining progression-free survival risk and overall survival risk

    Background: Radiomics based on computed tomography ( CT) images is potential in promoting individualized treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), however, its role in immunotherapy needs further exploration. The aim of this study was to develop a CT-based radiomics score to predict the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) monotherapy in patients with advanced NSCLC.Methods: Two hundred and thirty-six ICI-treated patients were retrospectively included and divided into a training cohort (n=188) and testing cohort (n=48) at a ratio of 8 to 2. The efficacy outcomes of ICI were evaluated based on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). We designed a survival network and combined it with a Cox regression model to obtain patients' OS risk score (OSRS) and PFS risk score (PFSRS).Results: Based on OSRS and PFSRS, patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups in the training cohort and the test cohort with distinctly different [training cohort, log-rank P<0.001, hazard ratio (HR): 4.14; test cohort, log-rank P=0.014, HR: 4.54] and PFS (training cohort, log-rank P<0.001, HR: 4.52; test cohort, log-rank P<0.001, HR: 6.64). Further joint evaluation of OSRS and PFSRS showed that both were significant in the Cox regression model (P<0.001), and multi-overall survival risk score (MOSRS) displayed more outstanding stratification capabilities than OSRS in both the training (P<0.001) and test cohorts (P=0.002). None of the clinical characteristics were significant in the Cox regression model, and the score that predicted the best immune response was not as good as the risk score from follow-up information in the performance of prognostic stratification.Conclusions: We developed a CT imaging-based score with the potential to become an independent prognostic factor to screen patients who would benefit from ICI treatment, which suggested that CT radiomics could be applied for individualized immunotherapy of NSCLC. Our findings should be further validated by future larger multicenter study
