Ang mga Ideolohiyang Politikal ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) at United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) sa Panahon ng Administrasyong Duterte
ABSTRACT The article analyzes the political ideologies expressed in the pastoral statements of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP), published during the Duterte administration. To facilitate the hermeneutic analysis, the study utilized the modified ideological spectrum by Demeterio (2012), with two dimensions (progressiveretrogressive and libertarian-authoritarian) and eight political ideologies. It was found that CBCP’s ideological perspectives during Duterte’s regime is between liberal libertarian and moderate. On the other hand, the ideological tendencies of UCCP have been classified as liberal libertarian and moderate in pre-pandemic period and liberal libertarian in pandemic period. In general, although UCCP maintains a stronger stance in examining social issues, the political ideology of both UCCP and CBCP still fall under the libertarian perspective based on the x-axis of the modified spectrum. Meanwhile, the y-axis of the spectrum indicates that both CBCP and UCCP has a libertarian perspective towards maintaining the rights of the individual and the state
Komparatibong Analisis ng Sayaw na Ritwal ng Karakol sa Cavite Gamit ang Panata, Pagtitipon, at Pagdiriwang ni Anril Tiatco (Isang Preliminaryong Pag-aaral)
Karakol is a ritual dance performed by the people of the province of Cavite every time there is a feast of a Patron Saint or a “Poon” in a chapel or parish. However, in recent years, there has been a shift towards the use of modern music and modern steps and variations in dancing the ritual dance Karakol. This change has received different reactions from the people, especially with the older generations. Some people are criticizing these changes, and want to bring it back to the dance to its traditional style. However, some people perceive these changes as an opportunity to attract younger generations to go back to church and continue the tradition of dancing the Karakol. This research paper examines the changes in the Karakol ritual dance. Focusing on the evolution of the dance and its ritual, the motivations behind the changes from traditional religious Karakol, modern religious Karakol, to modern secular Karakol, a proposed categorization by Dioso and Demeterio in this paper on Karakol Ritual Dance. The theory of cultural performance, and Tiatco’s phenomenon of Panata, Pagtitipon, and Pagdiriwang are one of the bases of this paper, this study comparatively analyzed the three proposed categories of Karakol using the data from interviews and online videos and livestreams, visual ethnography during Karakol celebrations, as well as the personal experience of the researcher as a devotee and as a Karakol dancer. By identifying the cultural meanings and symbols expressed in the Cultural Performance, the study identified the differences in the suggested categories of Karakol in two old churches in Cavite, the Tanza Church and Rosario Church. In this sense, traditional religious Karakol is being overshadowed while the modern categories such as modern religious Karakol and modern secular Karakol are becoming more popular and more recognized by new devotees and Karakol dancers. This research is part of preliminary studies on this undocumented culture of devotion through the Karakol ritual dance
The fading batek: Problematizing the decline of traditional tattoos in the Philippine Cordillera Region
This paper builds on the findings established by an earlier paper, entitled “The Traditional Tattoos of the Philippine Cordillera Region: a Study on their Differences in Appearances, Causes and Discursive Strengths,” written by the author together with his research team and was published in Volume 8, Number 2 of SEARCH Journal. The previous paper was a synchronic study of traditional tattooing among the eight ethnolinguistic groups of the said region to establish a baseline knowledge of such practice prior to the massive influx of modern and western influences mediated by the American occupation. However, this paper aims to: 1) show some diachronic accounts of the said traditional tattooing, 2) problematize the historical vanishing of the this cultural practice, and 3) lay down some proposals on how to preserve and resignify the same cultural practice. The eight ethnolinguistic groups of the Philippine Cordillera region covered by this paper are: the Ibaloys, Kankana-eys, Ifugaos, Bontoks, Southern Kalingas, Northern Kalingas, Itnegs and Isnegs. This paper is primarily a historical work that used archival and library materials, as well as key informant interviews for its data, and they are analyzed from the theoretical lens of Michel Foucault’s archeology and genealogy of knowledge and Roland Barthes’ semiology. The goal of this paper is to grasp the current status of traditional tattooing in the Philippine Cordillera region in order to have some foresight to, if not influence on, its future. This paper is the concluding part of a bigger project that was funded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Republic of the Philippines. © The Author(s) 2017
Postmodernism from the perspectives of Filipino philosophers: Abulad, Co, Demeterio, and Pavo
Postmodernism may have originated from the west, but the Philippines as an English-speaking neo-colonial state that is thrust into context of globalization could not remain for long unaffected by the impact of this cultural and philosophical movement or trend. This paper analyzed postmodernism as seen by four Filipino philosophy scholars who are known in as far as the field of Filipino philosophy is concerned: Romualdo Abulad, Alfredo Co, Feorillo Demeterio III, and Raymundo Pavo. This paper made thematic, comparative and contrastive readings of the relevant essays of these four Filipino philosophy scholars in accordance to their: 1) definitions of postmodernism, 2) aspects of postmodernism analyzed, 3) discursive positioning, 4) underpinning concerns, and 5) general appraisals of postmodernism. The overall aim of this paper is to provide an initial assessment on how postmodernism has impacted the Philippines and how Filipino philosophy is coming to terms with this predominantly western phenomenon. © 2018 Mary Irene Clare O. The Philosophical Thoughts of Vajiravudh: A Dialogical Analysis from the Perspective of Critical Filipino Philosophy
Vajiravudh (1881-1925), or King Rama VI of Siam, son of Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) and brother of Prajadhipok (King Rama VII), was a writer, nationalist, reformist, known as the Maha Thiraraja (philosopher king), and a creative genius among the Thai people. His context of a semi-colonial country that was pressured to embrace globalization and modernization still resonates with theconditions of some parts of Southeast Asia, such as the Philippines. This paper explored his philosophical ideas from the point of view of critical Filipino philosophy, a family of discourses that can be traced back to the musings of the late 19th century Filipino propagandists, with the intention of gleaning meaningful lessons for the contemporary Filipino people. Specifically, this paper looked into Vajiravudh’s thoughts on nationalism and identity, the Chinese and Muslim minorities, modernization and international relations, politics, gender, and family, as well as on his use of literature in philosophizing. This paper is significant in building up the literature on comparative Southeast Asian philosophy

A critical reflection on my reading and re-reading of Emerita Quito\u27s thoughts on the underdevelopment and hope for the development of Filipino philosophy
Quito published her book The State of Philosophy in the Philippines in 1983. When the book was already out for fifteen years, I undertook a re-reading of its identified four clusters of reasons for the underdevelopment of Filipino philosophy, and hope for development in 1999, through an article “Re-Reading Emerita Quito\u27s Thoughts Concerning the Underdevelopment of Filipino Philosophy.” Thirty-six years after the publication of Quito\u27s book, and twenty years after the publication of my re-reading, this paper looks back again on Quito\u27s four clusters of reasons and hope, as well as on my re-reading of such reasons and hope, with the intention of sharpening our collective diagnosis on what continue to cause the underdevelopment of Filipino philosophy, as well as imagining more realistic pathways towards its more robust development. This paper, therefore, has two substantive sections: the first is an exposition of Quito\u27s four clusters of causes and hope, accompanied by my commentaries on such four causes and hope; and the second is my present critical reflection on Quito\u27s thirty-four-year-old diagnosis and hope, as well as on my twenty-year-old commentary
