Consistency of diet and its effects on mandibular morphogenesis in the young rat
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between mandibular morphogenesis and masticatory function in 30 male Sprague-Dawley rats, 28 days of age. Animals were randomly divided into three groups and they received diets of different consistency: liquid, normal (as control group) and elastic diet. The experiment lasted 28 days, at the end of which lateral radiographs of the cranium and photographs of the hemimandibles were made. These images were magnified fourfold and analysed in two dimensions (V = vertical dimension; S = sagittal dimension). Condylar morphology was also assessed. The photographic analysis of the hemimandible showed a significantly higher growth of the mandibular ramus stimulated by the elastic diet: V2 2.4 mm, V3 2.4 mm, V4 1.9 mm, V5 4.1 mm (p < 0.05). In contrast, a statistically significant (p < 0.05) lengthening of the mandibular corpus occurred in the rats subjected to liquid diet (S1 4.5 mm, S2 2.7 mm, S3 1.6 mm, S4 2.6 mm). Measurements were taken on both the radiographic and the photographic records. The variation coefficient showed that photographic analysis was more accurate than the radiographic analysis. From these data it appears that an increase in the tonus of the protrusive muscles could be beneficial in mandibular hypoplasia and the increased tonus of the masticatory muscles in skeletal open bite
interventi ricostruttiv
3D Facial Landmark Models for Soft Tissue Analysis with The 3D 3Cameras StereoPhotogrammetry
Measure and comparison of facial attractiveness indices through photogrammetry and statistical analysis
The aesthetic criteria have been analyzed for years in various studies, still leaving the debate open today. Beauty, while easy to identify, remains something difficult to define. Facial beauty, influenced by cultural, environmental and genetic aspects, is considered easier to characterize. By detecting certain points on the face, it was possible to compare the main linear and angular measurements of the face of 33 participants in an Italian beauty contest in 2015, therefore considered attractive, with those belonging to 33 women considered as reference group. The statistical test shows how a face considered attractive is characterized by measures that are, in most cases, more pronounced

Accurate Facial Morphologic Measurements Using a 3-Camera Photogrammetric Method
Objectives: A new, low-cost photogrammetric method has been developed for facial morphometry applications. To evaluate the system, tests for the measurement and comparison of three-dimensional virtual faces were carried out in different subjects.
Materials and Methods: Twenty adult white Italian subjects, 10 men and 10 women, of ages ranging from 23 to 37 years, were included in this study. Three cameras were finely calibrated, and the point precision vector length was calculated, together with the quality parameters. For each subject, 3 different acquisitions were performed. A tessellated surface was obtained from each point cloud. The comparison was made by aligning three-dimensional information from different models. Differences between 2 different models were estimated by analysis of the distances.
Results: For the cases analyzed, the mean point precision overall root-mean-square vector length was 0.07 mm, with a SD of 0.027 mm. The results are reported for the system's capability of discriminating between the faces of different people. Results of comparisons between facial models of a single person were compared with those of comparisons between different subjects. Student's t-test revealed that the system was able to discriminate among different people, with a P > 95%. Two sex subgroups were formed: the mean error between subgroups ranged from 1.65 to 3.43 mm, and the mean ranged from 1.76 to 2.72 mm.
Conclusions: The experiments confirmed the capabilities and the accuracy of the proposed photogrammetric system. Facial comparison was performed by analysis of distances on three-dimensional virtual models
