Role of Cerebellar Interpositus Nucleus in the Genesis and Control of Reflex and Conditioned Eyelid Responses

    No full text
The role of cerebellar circuits in the acquisition of new motor abilities is still a matter of intensive debate. To establish the contribution of posterior interpositus nucleus (PIN) to the performance and/or acquisition of reflex and classically conditioned responses (CRs) of the eyelid, the effects of microstimulation and/or pharmacological inhibition by muscimol of the nucleus were investigated in conscious cats. Microstimulation of the PIN in naive animals evoked ramp-like eyelid responses with a wavy appearance, without producing any noticeable plastic functional change in the cerebellar and brainstem circuits involved. Muscimol microinjections decreased the amplitude of reflex eyeblinks evoked by air puffs, both when presented alone or when paired with a tone as conditioned stimulus (CS). In half-conditioned animals, muscimol injections also decreased the amplitude and damped the typical wavy profile of CRs, whereas microstimulation of the same sites increased both parameters. However, neither muscimol injections nor microstimulation modified the expected percentage of CRs, suggesting a major role of the PIN in the performance of eyelid responses rather than in the learning process. Moreover, the simultaneous presentation of CS and microstimulation in well trained animals evoked CRs similar in amplitude to the added value of those evoked by the two stimuli presented separately. In contrast, muscimol-injected animals developed CRs to paired CS and microstimulation presentations, larger than those evoked by the two stimuli when presented alone. It is concluded that the PIN contributes to the enhancement of both reflex and conditioned eyelid responses and to the damping of resonant properties of neuromuscular elements controlling eyelid kinematics

Two letters from Mas Sakai to the Sakai Family, sent from Tanforan Assembly Center, informing the family that he will be leaving for Utah the following day. The letter is laced with sarcasm as Sakai describes living conditions at Tanforan ("it wouldn't be right if I called it a concentration camp would it? After all we get the freedom of the track, don't we?"), and incarcerees' expectations of life at Topaz ("we all look to Utah with a song in our hearts (a funeral march) for there are our golden opportunities. Wonderful, trackless, sand to plant in, and cool refreshing salt water to drink. We especially look forward to the toilets (no seats)").Personal correspondence, organizational records, government documents, publications, and other papers created or collected by Joseph R. Goodman documenting the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, as well as organized resistance to incarceration. Included in the collection are records of the Japanese Young Men's Christian Association and the Japanese American Citizens' League in San Francisco, including papers of the Japanese YMCA's executive secretary Lincoln Kanai; Sakai family papers; Goodman's correspondence to and from Japanese American incarcerees, organizations opposing forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans, the War Relocation Authority, and others; publications, photographs, and ephemera from the Topaz Relocation Center, where Goodman taught high school; War Relocation Authority records and publications; and newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and reports about forced removal and incarceration created by various government, religious, and civic organizations, in California and nationwide

The Marranism and the poetry of João Pinto Delgado, author of On Leaving Lisbon

This paper presents an approach to a subtype of the corpus of Western Sephardic Diaspora literature. These are works written in Spanish and Portuguese by authors of Jewish origin, but who lived as nominal Christians for two or more generations, due to persecution inquisitorial. Once reinserted into Judaism, it would have been imperative for the conversos to re-signify their identity. In order to do so, they used, among other instruments, literature. In this sense, the poem A La Salida de Lisboa, written in Spanish in the seventeenth century in Holland by the Portuguese João Pinto Delgado, would have constituted a tool in the search for the reconstruction of the Jewish identity of the author, as of his peers. Such reconstruction would not take place without eliciting elements proper to the Iberian inquisitorial culture, including notions of nobility and purity of blood, identifiable in the work

Leiomiosarcoma do Intestino Delgado – um caso clínico

    No full text
Leiomyosarcomas (LMS) are rare mesenchymal tumours. LMS of the small bowel originate from smooth muscle cells from muscularis propria, with a peak of incidence around 60 years of age, without characteristic clinical signs, being, most of the time, detected when studying the cause of an occult haemorrhage or intestinal occlusion, with findings in CT scan or US. We report a case of a female patient, of 53 years of age, brought at our assistance with complaints of hipogastric discomfort, with a palpable mass in hipogastro and umbilical region, and that after performing an abdominal CT scan, was disclosed a mass, with 12 cm, appearing to have involvement of jejunal loops. In surgery, a jejunal mass, with extra-luminal growth was disclosed and excised, whose histology identified as being a Leiomyosarcoma. With a 24 month of follow-up, there is no recurrence. In this paper several examples of mutual influence between writing and orality in Sephardic literature will be analysed: 1) oral literature samples which have come through writing (in quotations of Hebrew hymnbooks, in editions of Spanish written in Arabic characters and in manuscripts of personal use)2) elements of orality in written literature (poetry written to be sung, public reading of written text, traditionalism of texts with bookish origin) and 3) tradicionalism of author literature spread by oral means, not traditional ones (performance, radio, records, etc)Peer reviewe

Negotiating Ethnic Recognition Systems in the UK: the soft pan-ethnic identifications of Latin American migrants in the north of England

    No full text
Despite aiming to provide minority ethnic groups with material equality and protection from discrimination, the British ethno-cultural system of recognition has perpetuated social differentiation which is difficult to transcend. Drawing from interviews with informants and 10 in-depth case studies with Latin American and Latino-British families in the Yorkshire and Greater Manchester regions of the north of England, the paper explores the fraught relationship between these migrants and their multicultural framework of incorporation. Significant here are the contested understandings of the Latin American collective identity, combined with the diversity of migration trajectories, socioeconomic backgrounds and life-course needs of migrants and their children, which contribute to soft pan-ethnic identifications among the participant population. It is argued that, by encouraging migrants and their descendants to seek recognition through absolute ethnic differences, multicultural recognition systems can reproduce colonial categories and fail to respond to the diverse social and life-course needs of migrants

    Tumores malignos do intestino delgado
