Mechanical weed control - Demonstration of 10 harrows and hoeing machines
In autumn 2019, at the " working days " in Oudenaarde, West-Flanders, the agricultural research and consultancy organisation Inagro held a machine demonstration for mechanical weed control. In this video, advisor Lieven Delanote from Inagro presents machines from various companies. The demonstration illustrates how much mechanical weed control has developed in recent years

From Male Master To Caring Mediator. Lieven De Cauter on utopia, the commons, urban gardening and the changing role of the architect
INTRODUCTION This interview took place in early January, 2023 between Belgian philosopher, art historian, writer, and activist, Lieven De Cauter (b. 1959), and Ralph Ghoche, Assistant Professor of Architecture at Barnard College, Columbia University. De Cauter is Professor of the Philosophy of Culture in the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Planning at KU Leuven and the author of some 20 books. Beyond his academic writings, De Cauter has published poems, essays in architectural critic..
“Literature and Energy” at TALES (Tampere Literary Evenings), 10 April 2024
Looking forward to today's TALES event (Tampere Literary Evenings), where I join author/energy activist Risto Isomäki to talk about literature and energy. Risto Isomäki does not really need an introduction to a Finnish audience, but for an international public it might be interesting to know that he is the author of one of the first novels to explicitly consider man-made future climate catastrophe in his novel The Sands of Sarasvati (Sarasvatin hiekkaa; 2005), also made into a fascinating gr..
Future of the Novel - syllabus update and guest lecture
The course I am co-teaching with Natalya Bekhta on "The Future of the Novel" is nearing its final stages, with the most recent classes on Bulgarian author Gospodinov's Time Shelter and Polish author Tokarczuk's The House of Day, the House of Night, and the final class in a few weeks on Norwegian author Rimbereid's Solaris corrected. Full updated syllabus below and in this pdf. Today (25 March), instead of a regular class, our students are listening in to a guest lecture by Eric Hayot on "The..
Shared values and fair relationships as a basis for a sustainable collaboration in local (organic) value chains
Problem
The small scale and local production of cereals, quinoa and (new) pulses, even when organic, in a region as intensive as Flanders cannot compete with global (incl. European) markets due to high production costs. This has caused the disappearance of these crops from the Flemish landscape.
Solution
Using local value chains can offer added value by filling a growing niche in the market, since a growing number of consumers are looking for local and ‘authentic’ food. Shared values and an authentic story can justify, within limits, a higher price
Samengestelde kruisingspopulaties bevestigen
Small scale diversification with cereals, quinoa, pulses, etc, in local (organic) value chains
Problem
Cereals, quinoa and (new) pulses for local human consumption can diversify (organic) vegetable rotations. Between the idea to diversify rotations and the practice, lots of mistakes and setbacks often occur which could be avoided by planning beforehand.
Solution
Besides cultivation knowledge, it is recommended to make appropriate post-harvest equipment and facilities (e.g. for drying, cleaning and sorting) available beforehand. It is also recommended to explore profitable local value chains beforehand
A focus on cereals in conference on organic breeding and propagation material with Belgian stakeholders
Belgian organic farmers are dependent on mostly foreign seed companies or their local distributors. This is the case as well for vegetables as for arable crops. The Belgian COBRA farmers conference in March 2015 aimed to bring organic farmers back to the real origin of organic seed
