Incorporating Sustainability in Engineering Education: a Review of Current Practices
At the United Nations Earth Summit, in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, participating nations agreed to work together to achieve the goal of sustainable development. Twenty years on great progress has been made, but many challenges remain and overcoming them and ensuring a sustainable future will require the knowledge, skills and input of engineering professionals. The skill set those engineers will need has grown dramatically. The American Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum Engineering is investigating how sustainability is being incorporated into engineering education across disciplines. In this paper we describe the ongoing shift to sustainable engineering and discuss a variety of approaches that universities are currently using to introduce engineering students to sustainability principles and practice
Experiences and Recommendations from the SARMa Project
In the framework of an EU co-funded project titled “Sustainable Aggregates Resource Management” (SARMa) the following two objectives were pursued: (i) To develop a common approach to Sustainable Aggregates Resource Management (SARM) across SEE, namely to move towards efficient and low socio-environmental impact Quarrying considering also waste management, and (ii) To ensure a Sustainable Supply Mix (SSM) policy in SEE, that is to use multiple sources, including recycled wastes and industrial by-products (slag) that together maximize net benefits of aggregate supply across generations. This paper presents an overview of the experiences gained and the recommendations developed
Application of similarity principles and turbulence research to bed-load movement
Translation of the Ph.D. thesis of A. Shields "Anwendung der Aehnlichkeitsmechanik und der Turbulenzforschung auf die Geschiebebewegung"
Legal issues of human shields
The paper focuses on analyzing whether the civilians involved in the hostilities as involuntary
human shields enjoy the same legal protection under the law as voluntary human shields. The
author looks at the differences between voluntary and involuntary human shields and the
aspect of direct and indirect participation in hostilities. The analysis is based upon
International Law and Criminal Law articles and interpretations concerning the notion of
human shields. In addition, multiple cases where the human shields were observed, were also
examined to understand the court practice on how the court deals with the law breaches in
contemporary armed conflicts
Anwendung der Aehnlichkeitsmechanik und der Turbulenzforschung auf die Geschiebebewegung
Ph.D thesis of Shields, original version in German. This document is the basis of all modern sediment transport formulae, and develops the concept of bed shear stress
