The Role of Evidence in Establishing Trust in Repositories
Get PDFThis article arises from work by the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) Working Group examining mechanisms to roll out audit and certification services for digital repositories in the United Kingdom. Our attempt to develop a program for applying audit and certification processes and tools took as its starting point the RLG-NARA Audit Checklist for Certifying Digital Repositories. Our intention was to appraise critically the checklist and conceive a means of applying its mechanics within a diverse range of repository environments. We were struck by the realization that while a great deal of effort has been invested in determining the characteristics of a 'trusted digital repository', far less effort has concentrated on the ways in which the presence of the attributes can be demonstrated and their qualities measured. With this in mind we sought to explore the role of evidence within the certification process, and to identify examples of the types of evidence (e.g., documentary, observational, and testimonial) that might be desirable during the course of a repository audit.
"Volunteers" - Reflections on Humanics - Feb 26, 1998
No full textThis column, titled “Volunteers,” is part of a series of reflections written by Springfield College’s Distinguished Professor of Humanics Joel Dearing on February 26, 1998.Dearing was Springfield College’s Distinguished Professor of Humanics during the 1997-1998 academic year. During this time, he started a weekly column in the Springfield Student newspaper called, “Reflections on Humanics.” In his column from the week of February 26, 1998, Dearing begins by stating that volunteerism has long been associated with Springfield College. He references Dr. Jean Ross, former Distinguished Professor of Humanics who was also one of Dearing’s undergraduate professors, and her study to attempt to determine the level of volunteerism at Springfield College by students and employees.
Dearing goes on to say that he believes volunteerism at the college is alive and well. He describes volunteering as an act of passion or compassion with rewards that are intrinsic. He says it is the promotion of volunteering and giving students the opportunity to volunteer that is most important. The Newman Community at SC is one group who provides outreach opportunities, as well as Dr. Cathie Schweitzer who coordinates student-athletes to volunteer at sports clinics in the community. Dearing discusses Dale Lucy-Allen, who is the SC Director of Student Volunteer Services and is involved with many community partnerships. Dearing talks about volunteer projects that are coming up shortly at Springfield, including STOP EVERYTHING FOR HUMANICS day, “Christmas in April,” “Earth Day Clean-Up,” volunteering at the Emergency Food Pantry, Olympus Specialty Hospital, Martin Luther King Community Center, Partners Program, and many more.
Dearing earned his BS from Springfield College in 1979 and taught as an associate professor of Physical Education at the college. Dearing also coached women’s volleyball for 22 seasons (1989-2010). He finished his career with a win-loss record of 595-196 and a .752 winning percentage. Dearing was the recipient of several different Coach of the Year honors throughout the years
