On Bayesian estimation in an exponential distribution under random censorship
summary:The paper gives some basic ideas of both the construction and investigation of the properties of the Bayesian estimates of certain parametric functions of the parent exponential distribution under the model of random censorship assuming the Koziol–Green model. Various prior distributions are investigated and the corresponding estimates are derived. The stress is put on the asymptotic properties of the estimates with the particular stress on the Bayesian risk. Small sample properties are studied via simulations in the special case
Confidence intervals for the parameter of the scaled-uniform model
The scaled-uniform model has been lately considered to illustrate problems in frequentist point estimation arising when the minimal sufficient statistic is not complete. Here we consider the problem of interval estimation and derive pivotal quantities based on a series of point estimators proposed in the literature. We compare the resulting intervals of given confidence level in terms of expected lengths. Pivotal quantities, confidence intervals and expected lengths are all computed using simulations implemented with R (code is available). Numerical results suggest that the maximum likelihood estimator, regardless of its inefficiency, yields confidence intervals that outperform the other available sets of the same level
A note on the progressive overlap of two alternative Bayesian intervals
In Bayesian inference, the two most widely used methods for set estimation of an unknown one-dimensional parameter are equal-tails and highest posterior density intervals. The resulting estimates may be quite different for specific observed samples but, at least for standard but relevant models, they tend to become closer and closer as the sample size increases. In this article we propose a pre-posterior method for measuring the progressive alignment between these two classes of intervals and discuss relationships with the skewness of the posterior distribution. We illustrate the implementation of the method using the software R for the Poisson model and for some standard examples
Engineering and economic aspects of the N.F.T. systems
The necessity of high quality products and energy saving technologies aroused a growing interest in the hydroponics, especially the Nutrient Film Technique. The N.F.T. is a scientific and controlled system of growing, but the introduction of N.F.T. needs high installation costs and good scientific knowledge; on the other hand it also leads to good commercial results. There are those who consider the N.F.T. system as a system of growing for control. The field of introduction of new technology in the N.F.T. systems is the electronic control of the nutrient concentration, acidity and ion concentration of the nutrient solution. Up to the present, simple on/off control has been applied in order to maintain the parameters, such as nutrient concentration and pH between fixed set levels by means of the addition of acid or salts to the nutrient solution. Knowledge of the factors affecting the biological processes is essential to the design and the development of a feasible and modern Nutrient Film Technique system and of the relative control system. The main problem in the development of an innovative technique is the choice of the moment of the application; the relationship between costs and profits for the introduction of innovative technology is discussed here. The main objective of this paper is to suggest an interpretation and to analyze the advanced adaptive control systems, ion concentration innovative sensors and the costs and limits of their introduction. A comparative analysis about costs-profits between traditional and innovative control systems has also been developed with respect to the dimension of the hydroponic system
