Mission and Unity: The Common Witness of Separated Churches?

    No full text
This contribution is meant as a broad introduction to the topic of mission and unity. I start with looking back at the ecclesiological tradition of my own Church. In anticipation of the upcoming celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council I will ask whether this Council has managed in its major documents to keep the concerns of mission and unity together. In a second move, I engage in an exercise of ‘receptive ecumenism’. Whoever is engaged in ecumenical dialogues should take the time to better understand the theological views of the other Christian churches. In view of the fact that this book – and the preceding academic consultation of Societas Oecumenica – has a particular focus on mission and unity in the ‘Balkans’, I decided to study the rich Orthodox reflection on the theme of mission and unity. In the third part of my lecture I will visit the ecumenical scene in order to pay attention to signs of a greater attention to missionary concerns. My attention will especially go towards the Faith and Order paper on The Nature and Mission of the Church (2005). Finally I will share with you the fruits of my unfortunately merely virtual tour to Edinburgh 2010, a tour which I make in order to find out how far-reaching the interest of the Centenary of the 1910 World Missionary Conference to pay attention to the concerns of mission and unity has been.status: Publishe

The Ecumenical Study Days of Chevetogne

This contribution offers a substantial analysis of the work of the first international association of Catholic ecumenists, the Catholic Conference for Ecumenical Questions, which organized nine consultations in between 1952 and 1963 under the leadership of its secretary, Johannes Willebrands. After sketching the complex history of the creation of a workable structure for the CCEQ, the attention goes to its two major achievements, which chronologically follow one another. Sections 2 and 3 show how the CCEQ has made an attempt to provide a Catholic response to themes of interest to the World Council of Churches. Sections 4 and 5 demonstrate how the CCEQ and its board through the composition of a position paper on Christian unity and through the organization of the 1960 and 1961 conferences contributed to the renewal of Roman Catholic ecclesiology and ecumenism. The final section describes the attempts of CCEQ to organize interconfessional meetings of theologians
