Developing geographical professional abilities: experiences in Egypt and Brazil
Sustainable development asks for solid systemic and territorial knowledge, abilities in new decision making processes and skills inrecognition and empowerment of local actors. Geography can supplì the challenge of sustainable development with theory and ractice. This paper dealswith the experiences of the author in feld work improving students with geographical knowledge and practices about participatory territorial (land use) management.
Two examples are displayed: a seminar with students studying a degree in Development Cooperation held in Egypt in Novembre 2003 and a seminar “Citizenship, Territory and Power” in Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), in March 2004, with the degree students in pedagogy working in a community school. In the two cases geography represent an important theoretical and practical tool to work in territorial dynamics, for geography in education it is strategic and compulsory to go back to “the reality of territory”

On-line prediction of beef quality traits using near infrared spectroscopy
The aim of this study was to test the ability of visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) reflectance spectroscopy to pre- dict beef quality traits in the slaughterhouse by directly applying a fiber-optic probe on the carcass surface. Carcasses from 230 young bulls and heifers slaughtered in two commercial abattoirs were included in the ex- periment. Vis-NIR spectra were recorded on an exposed surface of M. gracilis in the abattoirs 4 to 6 and 14 to 16 h post mortem. Traits evaluated were pH, color indexes (L*, a*, b*, H, and SI), cooking loss, and Warner– Bratzler shear force. Prediction models were satisfactory for pH and color indexes, and promising for cooking loss but not for Warner–Bratzler shear force. Results of this work show that Vis-NIR spectroscopy may be a useful tool for on-line prediction of some physical beef quality traits when applied directly on the carcass surface
Breeding Sustainability with daily decision making: the water management plan of the Auotonomous province of Trento
The article deals with the application in Alpine area of Italy, Germany and Austria of one of the models to diffuse sustainable choices known as 'good practice'. A pioneer survey about the application of good practices in water and territorial management is presented with the analysis of main results. Then the successful factors and the transferability of good practice are discussed. The article intends to represent an opportunity of exchanging experiences to implement sustainable decision making about water and territorial management
