The Rambling Boy
My parents treated me tenderly, there was no boy but me,
My mind was bent on rambling, w ith them I couldn't agree,
So, I became a rambler, which grieved their hearts so sore,
And I left my aged parents, I never shall see no more.
There was a rich old farmer who lived a neighbor nigh,
He had a handsome daughter on whom I cast an eye,
He had a handsome daughter so beautiful and fair,
That there wasn't a girl in the country with who I could compare.
I asked if it made any difference if I w ent to Illinois,
She said 'tw ould make no difference if I'd return again,
So, we kissed, shook hands and parted, the girl I left behind.
I landed near York Junction, a town in Illinois,
Where work and money was plenty and the girls to me proved kind,
But the only desires of my heart was the girl I left behind.
One evening I was walking around the public square,
The mail coach had ariven, the court boy met me there,
He handed me a letter which gave to understand,
That the girl I left behind me had run off w ith another man.
I advanced a little bit farther, the news I found quite true,
I turned myself around and about, I didn't know what to do,
I swore my trade I would give o'er, in rambling I'd resign,
That I'd travel this world from town to town for the girl I left behind.
Oh, don't place your affections on the top of any tree,
For the leaves they will wither and the roots they will decay,
And the beauty of the fairest maid will soon fade away.
Mitch..That's the very complete version of that song. What other title have
you known it by?
Mary Jo..The Girl I Left Behind.
Mitch..I believe it's also called The Rich Old Farmer. Do you remember?

The case for tradable remedies in WTO dispute settlement
In response to concerns over the efficacy of the WTO dispute settlement system, especially in regard to its use by developing countries, Mexico has tabled a proposal to introduce tradable remedies within the Dispute Settlement Understanding. The idea is that a country that has won cause before the WTO, and who is facing non-implementation by the author of the illegal act but feels that its own capacity to exercise its right to impose countermeasures is unlikely to lead to compliance, can auction off that right. The attractiveness of this idea is that it offers an additional possibility to injured WTO members to get something from the dispute settlement mechanism without putting into question the legal nature of the existing contract, that is, the predominantly decentralized system of enforcement in the WTO. Examining all disputes brought to the WTO since its inception, the authors find some support for Mexico's perception that developing countries face a practical problem when they attempt to carry through with effective retaliation within the WTO system. And based on the formal results of Bagwell, Mavroidis, and Staiger (2003), they describe arguments that lend some support to the efficacy of Mexico's proposed solution from the perspective of formal economic theory.Information Technology,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,General Technology,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Trade and Services,Economic Theory&Research,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Information Technology,World Trade Organization
Message passing neural networks for molecular property prediction
This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Thesis: M. Eng. in Computer Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2019Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 81-84).Developing new drugs relies heavily on understanding the various molecular properties of potential drug candidates. While experimental assays performed in the lab are the best source of information about molecular properties, these assays are slow and expensive. For this reason, there has been great interest in the potential of machine learning models to predict molecular properties without the need for experimental assays. However, recent literature has not yet clearly determined which machine learning models are optimal for molecular property prediction. In this thesis, I apply the Direct Message Passing Neural Network (D-MPNN) from [47, 48] to 19 publicly available property prediction datasets, and I demonstrate that it consistently outperforms prior machine learning models. Additionally, I introduce several optimizations to the D-MPNN which further enhance its performance and lead to new state-of-the-art results.by Kyle Swanson.M. Sightfulness
This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2019Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references.Architecture has historically been situated within the world of mixed reality. Brunelleschi's Baptistery in Florence introduced illusory space inserting depth into a two-dimensional plane in the fifteenth century. Centuries later, the Bauhaus challenged the hegemony of perspectival space in favor of axonometric projection, subverting the perceived experience of architecture for its formal attributes. Today our perception of the world is mediated by social media, photo manipulation software, and screen resolution. These technologies conspire not for a fidelity to reality but to promote social and political agendas-truth is not truth. Conversely, rapid improvements in camera technology attempts an objective unification of what qualifies as "clear" and "crisp" photography to document the world while counter-cultural technologies, including hallucinogenic drugs, seek clarification of a different kind. Sightfulness is a guided trip through media phase changes. It fluidly moves between photo realistic representations of common elements in space to impossible infinite multiplications, inversions, distortions and moments of pure abstraction. It leverages advances in computational software that allow a blurring between the virtual and the real. It disorients the viewer through unpredictable transitions, destabilizing their conception of the world that they are inhabiting.by Kyle Branchesi.S.M.S.M. This research was featured in UDaily on 5/19/2025 at: https://www.udel.edu/udaily/2025/may/global-crop-data-irrigation-agriculture/Crop production is among the most extensive human activities on the planet – with critical importance for global food security, land use, environmental burden, and climate. Yet despite the key role that croplands play in global land use and Earth systems, there remains little understanding of how spatial patterns of global crop cultivation have recently evolved and which crops have contributed most to these changes. Here we construct a new data library of subnational crop-specific irrigated and rainfed harvested area statistics and combine it with global gridded land cover products to develop a global gridded (5-arcminute) irrigated and rainfed cropped area (MIRCA-OS) dataset for the years 2000 to 2015 for 23 crop classes. These global data products support critical insights into the spatially detailed patterns of irrigated and rainfed cropland change since the start of the century and provide an improved foundation for a wide array of global assessments spanning agriculture, water resource management, land use change, climate impact, and sustainable development. We thank Gambhir Lamsal and Landon Marston for providing the harvested area statistics for the United States. GRAD 20*12
NLY JUST BEGUN!
lass of 2012: Taryn Rombough MMMHM
Good morning family, friends, teachers, and fellow graduates of 2012. I am incredibly honoured to have the
opportunity to speak on behalf of my classmates. Today, we unite for one of the final times, to celebrate our
experiences, part with our past, and encourage each other to go out and face the world with
bravery.Graduation is turning the last page of a novel, and delving into the sequel with anticipation. It is hopes
and goals and dreams, which have been formed from experiences of the past. Up until this point, our stories
have bared countless similarities. We have all experienced the frustration of attempting to learn long division,
struggled with the pronunciation of big words, he fear of cooties, and the heartache of being in first grade,
when you’re convinced that the cute fifth grader who pushed you on the tire swing at recess is your soulmate.
We have experienced loss together, and middle-school drama that once felt like the end of the world. We
have faced
disappointment, and we have stood together as each of us attempted to figure out who we were and who we
are meant to be. Together we have also experienced joy, and the satisfaction that accompanies getting an A
on an exam. We all know the type of laughter that ties your stomach into knots and steals the breath right out
of your lungs. We have grown into young women and men, and written our stories, together. It is here, today,
where we part ways, and begin work on our own novels, the rest of our lives promising to be the product of the
decisions we have already made, our accomplishments, our desires, and the choices we will continue to make
inthe future.
At this point, I would like to extend thanks to our parents. As children, we begged you to check for monsters
beneath our beds, and kiss our bumps and bruises better. When we fell from our bikes, you applied bandages
with loving hands, and set us back on our feet, convincing us to try again, and always refusing to put the
training wheels back on, because you had faith that we could do it. From the very start, you have made it your
goal to prepare us for the inevitable future. You have taught us valuable life lessons, and encouraged us in
our endeavours, never failing to show pride in our accomplishments. Although we might not always admit it,
we are incredibly thankful that we had you to depend on, while growing up.
I would also like to thank the many teachers who have devoted their time to teaching us everything we need to
know, in order to face the world and succeed. You have become so much more than educators; you have
become role models, and more importantly, you have become friends. Some of the best memories we hold as
students were created within the confines of your classrooms. I, for one, will never forget a single biology
lesson, thanks to Luch's inventive teaching techniques, and I will always remember the simple act of reading
Shakespeare aloud, Chomany whispering in the background, encouraging us to read with more
expression, adding ghost sounds, and flickering lights to set the atmosphere.
Escaping the limitations of high school to chase our dreams, wherever they may take us, brings the promise of
new friends, new experiences, and numerous opportunities, which we will all be eager to take. However, as
we move forward in our lives, we must always remember the people and experiences that helped shape and
define us. We must remember the friends that laughed with us, cried with us, and stood with us while we
experienced the best days of our lives. We will continue to learn, outside the walls of W.R. Myers, however,
what we learn is not nearly as important as who we learn it with. The purpose of life is not to discover all the
secrets of the universe; it is to find happiness, and happiness is simply unachievable, unless you are
surrounded by good friends, and a supportive family.
Our future is quickly approaching, and many of us are still uncertain of our
destination. We cannot predict where we will end up ten years down the road,
but we can move forward with the knowledge that we are all capable of great
things. Some us will fall in love, build families, while others will escape into the
work force and pour their knowledge into a career that will drive the economy,
and perhaps, some will even go on to change the world. We are all capable. If
there ever comes a moment when you begin to doubt your abilities, look back
on your past experiences, and remember your accomplishments. We have
already made it so far, and our lives have just barely begun. Be courageous,
and imaginative. Continue making mistakes, as long as you continue to learn
fromthem, and, in the words of Confucius, “wherever you go, go with all your
heart.”
Thank you.

I Over the last four years at Myers we have witnessed our school grow
and move forward as a whole. We have been together through loss,
hardship and realities that are catastrophic to the teenage psyche. But
through these hard times each and every student’s character and
ability to cope with difficult circumstances has developed and helped
us grow into the strong individuals that we are as we leave this school.
Myers is full of dynamic personalities that are each unique but share
similarities that are connected through our high school experiences.
Although we have faced difficulty together we have also known our
fair share of good times; from classroom laughs to sporting triumphs

Repeated application of a novel creatine cream improves muscular peak and average power in male subjects
Using a multicenter, randomized controlled trial, (N = 123, age 23 [+ or -] 4 years) we sought to determine whether administration of a novel, topical creatine supplement could improve muscular performance after acute and repeated (7-day) exposure. To study the acute performance enhancing effects of the supplement, subjects completed 5 sets of 15 maximal concentric single-leg knee extensions with and without the application of a low- (low dose [LD]-3.5 ml) or high-dose (high dose [HD]-7 ml) topical creatine cream. After a wash-out period, subjects had one leg randomized to receive either the creatine or placebo cream, with further randomization into an oral creatine or placebo supplement group. Subjects completed 5 sets of 15 maximal concentric single leg knee extensions before and after the supplementation protocol. After acute application, no significant differences in peak power (LD: 252 [+ or -] 93 W, HD: 261 [+ or -] 100 W, p = 0.21), average power (LD: 172 [+ or -] 65 W, HD: 177 [+ or -] 69 W, p = 0.78), or fatigue index (LD: 13.4 [+ or -] 10.6%, HD: 14 [+ or -] 11.9%, p = 0.79) were observed between experimental and placebo creams (peak power: LD: 244 [+ or -] 76 W, HD: 267 [+ or -] 109 W; average power: LD: 168 [+ or -] 57 W, HD: 177 [+ or -] 67 W; fatigue index: LD: 12.4 [+ or -] 9.6%, HD: 12.8 [+ or -] 10.6%) or when controlling for sex. After the 7-day supplementation protocol, a significant increase in average power (creatine: 203 [+ or -] 61-220 [+ or -] 65 W, placebo: 224 [+ or -] 61-214 [+ or -] 61 W) and peak power (creatine: 264 [+ or -] 73-281 [+ or -] 80 W, placebo: 286 [+ or -] 79-271 [+ or -] 73 W) in the leg receiving creatine cream was observed in male subjects. No differences were observed in female subjects. The topical creatine cream did not enhance measures of muscle performance after acute application, but was able to improve peak and average power in male subjects after 7 consecutive days of application
