Isaac Peirce letter to Jeffery Mathewson
Letter written by Isaac Peirce, a settler in Belpre, Ohio, to W. Jeffery Matthewson. The letter discusses Peirce's efforts to find good tenants for Matthewson's land. It discusses attacks on the settlement by American Indians, troop strength, and general living conditions in the area. The city of Belpre was the second permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory. Established along the Ohio River in 1789 by members of the Ohio Company, the location was surveyed the previous year as Belle-Prairie, French for "beautiful meadow.
Thomas J. Davis Letter : February 18, 1864
Davis writes to Lucinda noting that his health is good. He details that the Corps is now six miles west of Huntsville building a railroad bridge. Davis writes that he doesnt think more troops will be allowed to go home until the others return, in part because the line west of Huntsville has been weakened in order to supply more men to strengthen the Knoxville line. Davis writes that the 18th Regiment is still on Provost Duty in Huntsville. He also received a letter from Brother Isaac, however notes that he has not heard from Brother William. Davis writes that he still might not be paid until the next pay day
Thomas J. Davis Letter : May 28, 1865
Davis writes to Lucinda acknowledging that she arrived home safely, however noting that he is disappointed she did not send her photograph. He notes that he also received a letter from Mr. Smith. Davis details that they are still encamped near Washington, and that some of the men have adopted the Potomac style. He further notes that the Western men and Potomac men do not get along, and details that the soldiers should be satisfied with fighting since defeating the Rebels. Davis writes that he received a letter from Brother William, who is currently living with Brother Isaac. Their letter notes that Davis' Mother's broken leg is healing. Davis concludes by noting that the army expects to be paid within the next several days
