Supporting online teaching and learning in early childhood courses
No full textThe phasing out of print based materials for external students in the Faculty of Education at QUT has led to a greater reliance on online teaching and learning. Both staff and students in the School of Early Childhood were surveyed to identify the features of online delivery that were positive contributors to the quality of teaching and learning as well as those features that might present difficulties or barriers to the quality of teaching and learning. As a whole, results indicated that both students and staff were positive about online delivery, and suggested that it is a contributing factor to the quality of teaching and learning. This paper reports on the results of the student surveys and raises questions around different ways of conceptualising effective online learning environments and practices in higher education environments
The Author and the Person: A Foucauldian Reflection on the Author in Knowledge Organization Systems
No full textBased on Foucault’s exploration of the author-function, the current study investigates knowledge organization systems’ treatment of persons. FRBR and FRAD do well to extend the information in library authority records beyond the personal name as a character string to include attributes of the person, yet aspects of the person as an author and of her author-function are still lacking. This paper briefly compares RDA/MARC and other current initiatives, and finds that Europeana, AustLit, The American Civil War: Letters and Diaries, and DBpedia all have the potential to record both attributes and relationships in authority records for persons. We conclude that additional attributes, relationships, and the previously unused category of events are pivotal to moving toward more Foucault-friendly KOSs in libraries

works, how Sarah Fielding (1710-68) established her identity as an author.
The definition of her role involves her notions of the functions of
writing and reading.
Sarah Fielding attempts to invite readers to form a sense of ties
by tacit understanding of her messages. As she believes that a work
of literature is produced through collaboration between the writer and
the reader, it is an important task in her view to show her attentiveness
toward reading practice. In her consideration of reading, she has two
distinct, even opposite views of her audience: on the one hand a familiar
and limited circle of readers with shared moral and cultural values and
on the other potential readers among the unknown mass of people. The
dual targets direct her to devise various strategies. She tries to
appeal to those who can endorse and appreciate her moral values as well
as her learning. Her writings and letters testify that she is sensitive
to the demands of the literary market, trying to lead the taste of readers
by inventing new forms.
The thesis opens with an overview of Sarah Fielding's career,
followed by a consideration of her critical attention to the roles of
reading. I go on to examine the narrative structures and strategies
she deploys, with a particular emphasis on her use of the epistolary
method. The following chapter deals with her attention to the reading
of the moral message tangibly embodied in her educational writing. It
is followed by an analysis of the activity which earned her a reputation
as a learned woman. Various as the forms of her works are, they invariably
reflect her attempt to balance herself between the two demands of
inventiveness and familiarity
Using passive and active acoustic methods for impact damage assessment of composite structures
No full textThis study aims to use the passive and active acoustic-based health monitoring methods for impact damage assessment of composite structures. To this aim, a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composite plate was fabricated and subjected to a simulated low-velocity impact by performing repeated quasi-static indentation tests where a loading-unloading-reloading test profile with 5 repetitions was adopted. Two Acoustic Emission (AE) broadband sensors and a network of eight piezoelectric (PZT) sensors were attached on the composite plate surface. AE (passive method) was employed during the loading and reloading phases of the indentation tests to online monitor the critical damage occurrence and also specify the damage type while scanning of the plate with Lamb waves (active method) was done to localize the damage when the structure was unloaded. Felicity Ratio (FR) index which was calculated based on the AE data could accurately detect that critical damage occurred during the 5th loading-unloading-reloading stage when the structural integrity dropped to 60% of its initial stage. New evidence has revealed that, aside from altered expression and effects on global cytosolic free Ca2+ levels via direct transport of Ca2+, some Ca2+ pumps and channels are able to contribute to tumorigenesis via mechanisms that are independent of their ability to transport Ca2+ or effect global Ca2+ homeostasis in the cytoplasm. Here, we review some of the most recent studies that present evidence of altered Ca2+ channel or pump expression in tumorigenesis and discuss the importance and complexity of localized Ca2+ signaling in events critical for tumor formation
From substance to process: a meta-ethnographic review of how healthcare professionals and patients understand placebos and their effects in primary care
No full textResearch suggests that a ‘placebo’ can improve conditions common in primary care including pain, depression, and irritable bowel syndrome. However, disagreement persists over the definition and clinical relevance of placebo treatments. We conducted a meta-ethnographic, mixed-research systematic review to explore how healthcare professionals and patients understand placebos and their effects in primary care. We conducted systematic literature searches of five databases – augmented by reference chaining, key author searches, and expert opinion – related to views on placebos, placebo effects, and placebo use in primary care. From a total of 34 eligible quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods articles reporting findings from 28 studies, 21 were related to healthcare professionals’ views, 11 were related to patients’ views, and two were related to both groups. In the studies under review, healthcare professionals reported using placebos at markedly different frequencies. This was highly influenced by how placebos were defined in the studies. Both healthcare professionals and patients predominantly defined placebos as material substances such as ‘inert’ pills, despite this definition being inconsistent with current scientific thinking. However, healthcare professionals also, but less prevalently, defined placebos in a different way: as contextual processes. This better concurs with modern placebo definitions, which focus on context, ritual, meaning, and enactivism. However, given the enduring ubiquity of substance definitions, for both healthcare professionals and patients, we question the practical, clinical validity of stretching the term ‘placebo’ towards its modern iteration. To produce ‘placebo effects’, therefore, primary healthcare professionals may be better off abandoning placebo terminology altogether
An element for development: calcium signaling in mammalian reproduction and development
No full textLife begins with calcium. It is the language that a sperm cell uses to respond to instructions from the female reproductive tract to alter its swimming pattern and gain the force required to penetrate the outer layers of the oocyte. The first heartbeat transpires from spontaneous calcium oscillations in embryonic cardiomyocytes. The dynamic balance of calcium between auditory hair cells and the fluid they bathe in enables us to hear our first sound, and our interpretation and response to this sound requires rapid calcium flux through neuronal voltage-sensitive calcium channels. Calcium signaling can decode and integrate informational cues from both the chemical and mechanical cellular microenvironment to drive the form and function of many mammalian organ-systems. Here, we highlight roles for the intracellular calcium signal in the reproductive- and developmental- biology of mammals. A greater appreciation of the signaling pathways that initiate and support life has wide-ranging significance for the fields of reproductive science, neonatology and regenerative medicine. Furthermore, as developmental programs are often reactivated in cancer, an improved understanding of the signaling pathways that underpin mammalian development has important implications for cancer research
