    Robert Topping was born in West Lafayette, Indiana. His father was on the faculty in the School of Electrical Engineering from 1903 to 1949. Topping talks about growing up in West Lafayette and graduating from Purdue in 1950 with a BS in Science. During the Korean War, he served as an Information Specialist in the US Air Force at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California. After serving a stint on a newspaper in Michigan, he came to Purdue in 1962 as Assistant Director of the Bureau of Information. He served as Director of the University News Service until 1976. He then became Assistant to the Vice President for Advancement. Topping talks about the Office of Publications and its role in the university communication chain. Topping is the author of several publications about Purdue: The Hovde Years and A Century and Beyond: The History of Purdue University

    South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of approximately 1 million people living across the large geographical area of Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. Approximately 6.4% describe themselves as South Asian compared with 4.28% of the workforce of the Trust. There is evidence that diversity in the workforce benefits organisations, employees, service users and the wider community. Positive action is a process permitted by law to overcome longstanding disadvantages experienced by minorities because of earlier discrimination in education and other aspects of their life. Positive action is seen by many, including governments, as one strategy that can used to address discrimination in employment and service provision

    Influence of cultivar, topping height, and harvest treatment on physical and chemical characteristics of flue-cured tobacco

    There has been an increased interest among the tobacco industry in the production of tip leaves in flue-cured tobacco. Different harvest treatments of flue-cured tobacco were compared across six cultivars and two topping heights with the objective of identifying tip grade tobacco. Agronomic and cured leaf chemistry data were collected. Cultivar had significant influences on yield, average price, grade index, and value in three growing seasons. NC 71 and RG H51 were the highest yielding cultivars, with grade indices among the highest as well. Increasing topping height increased tobacco yield in two of three years. As topping height increased there was a significant increase in the percentage of tobacco receiving a tip grade. The four harvest treatments focused on the ten uppermost leaves of the plant. Harvest treatments that allowed proper separation of stalk positions (5&5L and 7&3L treatments) resulted in increased yields and tip grades. Harvest treatments that separate upper stalk position tobacco resulted in a higher percentage of tip grades from a tobacco company grader. Chemical analysis identified differences between stalk positions at the top of the plant. In order for cigarette manufacturers to properly blend the tobacco used to make American blend cigarettes, this separation of stalk positions is important. Harvest treatments that combined stalk positions resulted in the loss of these chemical differences. By topping flue-cured tobacco four to five leaves higher than current extension recommendations and separating stalk positions correctly, tobacco growers can meet the crop throw requirements of tobacco marketing contracts.Master of Scienc

    Jane Topping was commissioned to design a t-shirt for the DISCORDIA exhibition, part of Generation, a landmark series of exhibitions celebrating 25 years of contemporary art in Scotland (all part of the Glasgow 2014 Culture Programme for the 2014 Commonwealth Games). The DISCORDIA exhibition featured a collection of limited edition t-shirts designed by contemporary artists involved with Patricia Fleming Projects from the early 90’s to the present. As well as Jane Topping, other artists in the exhibition included: Martin Boyce, Roddy Buchanan, Duncan Campbell, Justin Carter, Jacqueline Donachie, Raydale Dower, Claire Fontaine, Michael Fullerton, Douglas Gordon, Kenny Hunter, Kevin Hutcheson, Iain Kettles, Jim Lambie, Torsten Lauchmann, Scott Myles, Janie Nicoll, Steff Norwood, Danny Saunders, David Sherry, Ross Sinclair, Calum Stirling, Sue Tompkins and Walker & Bromwich. DISCORDIA celebrated the ‘DIY’ and ‘lo-fi’ approach to making art and projects instrumental to the rise of artist-led activity in Glasgow. Glasgow’s position as an important centre of contemporary art production has grown from a diverse ‘grass-roots’ artistic community. The selection highlights the contribution made by artists and Patricia Fleming Projects to today’s influential contemporary art sector, from the early days of ‘Fuse’; free studios in the 90’s, to key local and international events
