Truth, purification and power: Foucault's genealogy of purity and impurity in and after The Will to Know lectures

    No full text
Foucault’s 1970–71 lectures at the Collège de France, The Will to Know, highlight the significance of themes of purity and impurity in Western thought. Reflecting on these themes coincided with the emergence of Foucault’s theory of power. This article presents the first analysis of Foucault’s investigation of purity and impurity in The Will to Know lectures, identifying the distinctive theory Foucault offers of purity as a discursive apparatus addressing correspondence between the subject and the truth through the image of relative integrity or mixture. It then traces Foucault’s subsequent reflections on these themes in his later writings on disciplinary power. The implications of Foucault’s position are considered; the article will close by putting Foucault’s ideas in dialogue with those of Kristeva, and in considering the role that purity and impurity may play in resistance

Towards context-aware processes in people-centered factories of the future

    No full text
This paper presents a framework for context-aware processes on factory shop floors, in which the context used for adapting processes is created directly by the workers involved in the process. It departs from other approaches to building context-aware systems where the context is pre-defined by modelling experts not directly involved in the process. The paper focuses on techniques and tools for capturing people-centered context and using it for adapting processes to the needs of human workers. This framework forms the basis for a set of mockups, prototypes and conceptual models developed within SO-PC-Pro, an ongoing EU FP7 "Factories of the Future" research project

Naphthalene-imide Self-assembled Monolayers as a Surface Modification of ITO for Improved Thermal Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells

Electron-transport-layer-free (ETL-free) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) show great promise for commercialization due to their simple design and ease of fabrication. However, the interface between the transparent conductive oxides such as indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) and the perovskite is not optimal due to differences in their work functions, surface defects, and wettability of the substrates. Surface modification of ITO through self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to get ITO/SAM charge selective layers has shown great improvement in device performance in recent years, but little emphasis has been put on the stability of these devices. Here, we address this gap by introducing a series of newly synthesized naphthalene-imide derivatives which self-assemble at the interface between ITO and the perovskite interface and study their impact on the thermal stability of triple-cation PSCs. The chemical and thermal stabilities of the naphthalene-imide SAMs help improve the thermal stability of the devices, reaching T80 lifetimes exceeding 800 h for devices containing a pyridine-functionalized naphthalene diimide carboxylic acid at 85 °C in air. In addition, all SAMs improve the stabilized power output of the devices with respect to ITO-only reference devices. Drift-diffusion simulations reveal the strong influence of the ITO work function on the efficiency in ETL-free devices, and a work function reduction of 0.2 eV could improve efficiencies by over 30%. The functional diversity of naphthalene imides coupled with the ease of SAM deposition opens a pathway for stable, high-performing PSCs based on electron selective monolayers

Employment stability of entrants in newly founded firms : a matching approach using linked employer-employee data from Germany

    Get PDF
"Using a linked employer-employee dataset and taking the perspective of individuals rather than firms, this paper analyzes some effects of joining start-ups. We show that entrants in new firms differ from those joining incumbent firms, and we use a matching approach to compare a group of employees joining new firms in 1995/96 with a control group entering incumbent firms. Our results indicate that individuals' employment stability was higher in incumbent than in newly founded firms while their risk of becoming unemployed was lower. In particular in eastern Germany, joining firms that were older than six years was the best strategy." Vertical profiles of BrO and aerosols from MAX-DOAS measurements at Arrival Heights

    No full text
The data set contains vertical profiles of the bromine monoxide (BrO) mixing ratio and aerosol extinction in the lower troposphere derived from long-term Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) measurement at Arrival Heights, Antarctica (77°49' S, 166°39' E). Reactive halogen compounds, including bromine, have an important impact on the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere. Aerosols, and in particular blowing snow, potentially provide saline surfaces for the release of reactive bromine. Vertical profiles of BrO and aerosols are retrieved from slant column densities of BrO and the oxygen collision complex O4 using the optimal-estimation based HEIPRO algorithm as described in Frieß et al. [2011] (DOI:10.1029/2011JD015938). The data set consists of hourly data from October 2012 to present on a vertical grid with 20 layers of 100 m thickness between the surface and 2 km altitude. Note that a quantitative comparison of this data set with other vertically resolved observations requires the consideration of the MAX-DOAS averaging kernels which are available by the author upon request
