An Interview with Matthew Kaiser on Competition and Play

An Interview with Matthew Kaiser on Competition and Play, by Sean Scanlan. Matthew Kaiser, the author of The World in Play: Portraits of a Victorian Concept (Stanford UP, 2012) says that “[c]ompetition is the disease from which modern life suffers,” and that “[c]ompetition is the only cure” for this suffering. This contradictory pairing seems to get at the heart of his thesis: play, as a totalizing, umbrella-like concept, emanates from a host of philosophical, political, and scientific work produced by Victorians who posed many of their ideas of play in sports metaphors, competitive logics, and narratives of struggle. Kaiser goes beyond the dichotomy of competition and play/competition or play, by stating “I’m interested in the totalizing potential of both concepts, the way that play, or competition for that matter, swallows the world whole, becomes in the minds of so many people, the organizing principle of reality, whether of culture or nature or consciousness, or of all three.

In retrospect: The Structure of Scientific Revolutions

Fifty years ago, a short book appeared under the intriguing title The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Its author, Thomas Kuhn (1922–1996), had begun his academic life as a physicist but had migrated to the history and philosophy of science. His main argument in the book — his second work, following a study of the Copernican revolution in astronomy — was that scientific activity unfolds according to a repeating pattern, which we can discern by studying its history

Secondary loop reversible AC/HP system for electric vehicles

This paper presents experimentally obtained results of a secondary loop air conditioning-heat pump system compared to a baseline direct system. The secondary loop system has a refrigerant circuit operating between two 50/50 water glycol loops, and uses the identical compressor and accumulator as the baseline DX system. For most operating conditions in this study, the secondary loop system has slightly lower maximum capacity and lower COP/HPF compared to the DX system, while it has potential for integrated thermal management, waste heat recovery, and may allow better refrigerants to be used due to compact refrigerant loop design. It was found that system refrigerant charge needed for cooling was close to that for heating, and was about 200g less than required by the baseline. Operating parameters including compressor and pump speeds, air flow rates, and condenser exit subcooling were investigated to improve energy efficiency. Performance in different ambient conditions was also studied and compared to the baseline.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. Social work student intern manual for Kaiser Permanente

Project (M.S.W., Social Work) -- California State University, Sacramento, 2011.Employers often provide brief training for their workers and value quick learning from employees. Such expectations are not ideal for social work student interns, who are also developing professional skills and practicing theoretical application while adjusting to the internship work environment. This qualitative study capitalized on the internship experience of the author at Kaiser Permanente to discover what training materials were most relevant and useful to social work interns, and organized those materials into a social work student intern manual. This project was then evaluated by 5 previous and current social work interns at Kaiser Permanente, and each participant was interviewed on the quality of the manual. The findings from this study show that the manual contained useful and relevant materials, and that the manual would be a helpful tool for new social work interns.Social Wor
