Playing with Fire: Understanding the Sunni-Shi'a Sectarian Lifecycle
This article discusses the ingrained impediments which are likely to stifle India's rise and growth - a phenomenon which has figured prominently in scholarly and official assessments, in India and outside, for over a decade now. Intriguingly India's rise as a global power has already been adjudged a certainty in these assessments, but the author contends that there exists an apparent disjuncture between how the world sees India and the prevailing internal impediments. Therefore, any assessment of India as a global power without incorporating these impediments would be incomplete, misplaced and hyperbolic. Of late, in the light of India's growing internal and external socio-economic and political difficulties, more and more writings and proclamations by Indian and international experts indicate emerging scepticism over India's potential as a global power. Dielectric Antennas and Their Realisation Using a Pareto Dominance Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimisation Algorithm
Antennas utilising a dielectric medium are technologies that have become popular in modern wireless platforms. They offer several desirable features such as high efficiency, electrically small and resistance to proximity detuning. Being a volumetric radiator however, realising a final, commercially competitive solution, often requires the use of a computational optimisation algorithm.
In the realm of antenna design the practice of optimisation typically involves an automated routine consisting of a heuristic algorithm and a forward solving engine such as the finite element method (FEM) or finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The solving engine is used to derive a post-processed performance value typically referred to as an objective or
fitness function, while the heuristic method uses the objective function data to determine the next trial solution or solutions that approach a design goal.
Nowadays, commercially viable antenna platforms are not characterised by a single performance value, but rather, a series of objective functions that are often inherently conflicting. Thus, an increase in one objective function results in a decrease in another. The optimisation algorithm is therefore required to seek a solution dictated by the preferences of the designer.
Classical literature dominantly featured preference articulation, a priori, where the set of objectives are transformed into a scalar using a predefined preference arrangement. Contemporary theory implements the articulation a posteriori, where the complete set of compromise solutions are sought by the optimisation algorithm.
It is hypothesised that modern multi-objective optimisation (MOO) theory, using a posteriori preference articulation, can be more useful for contemporary antenna design. By treating the objectives as individual dimensions in a mathematical space, it allows for independent, simultaneous optimisation. At the time of writing this dissertation, all commercial simulation software that include an optimisation algorithm use a predefined preference to the performance criteria. Thus, where a large set of equally potential solutions exist, only one final solution is delivered.
This thesis examines two novel dielectric antenna technologies and uses modern MOO theory to obtain new solutions that supersede their prototypes. Of Unprincipled Formalism: Readings in the Work of David Malouf and Peter Carey
This thesis develops a critical reading methodology entitled unprincipled formalism. This methodology is tested in close readings of three relatively contemporary Australian literary texts: David Malouf's short story "A Traveller's Tale" (1986) and novella Remembering Babylon (1994), and Peter Carey's short story "The Chance" (1978). Unprincipled formalism is developed in relation to three broad contexts: the fragmented state of the contemporary discipline of literary studies; the complex of international economic and social phenomena which goes under the general rubric of globalisation; and the specific Australian left-liberal literary critical tradition which I have termed, for convenience sake, the Meanjin literary formation. Unprincipled formalism does not draw a distinction between form and content. Unprincipled formalism is a critical methodology that is both avowedly socially concerned and strictly formalist. It is concerned with articulating and analysing the particular social and political interventions made by literary texts (as well as the resultant critical discussion of those texts) through a consideration of the formal techniques by which literary texts situate themselves as acts of communication. Principal among these techniques is the mise en abyme. The thesis provides a detailed analysis of debates around the mise en abyme informed by the work of theorists such as Ross Chambers, Lucien Dallenbach, Frank Lentricchia, Moshe Ron, Jacques Derrida and others. Politically, unprincipled formalism attempts to steer a middling course between neo-liberal triumphalism on the one hand and nostalgic left romanticism on the other. This involves on the one hand a critique of neo-liberalism drawing on the work of Charles Taylor, Stephen Holmes, John Frow and others, and on the other a critique of a nostalgic romantic tendency in "progressive" critical technologies such as postmodern and postcolonial literary studies.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)School of HumanitiesFull Tex
The Workplace Health and Safety Needs and Possible Solutions for Health Care Workers in Emergency Departments of Taiwanese Hospitals
The occupational health and safety (OHS) risks encountered by health workers (HCWs) in hospitals are significant. A hospital workplace is rife with numerous occupational hazards, yet hazard exposure does not occur uniformly to all HCWs because these hazards are diverse, with multiple interacting risk determinants. Many attempts have been made to identify and minimise the risk of hazard exposure individually; however an integrative approach to address such complex and interconnected determinants has rarely been considered in strategy development. It is important to acknowledge that the single risk factor approach cannot adequately address the workplace health and safety needs of HCWs, particularly for those working in emergency departments (EDs).

Real-time Wireless Player Positioning System in Basketball
Positioning systems for the tracking of players in indoor sports provide coaches and educators valuable information for improving player performance and ultimately the team’s offensive and defensive plays. The play area layout in indoor basketball follows international specifications and is replicated at hundreds of venues around the world. A positioning system engineered once can potentially be deployed at multiple locations without redesign.
Player positioning systems that were once mainly dominated by video tracking systems are now possible through current and emerging technologies using wireless RF signal technologies and significant smaller devices. Wearable technology has not only reduced in size considerably but also in cost which are favourable to these wireless positioning systems.
This thesis examines whether a low cost, robust wireless RF signal player positioning system can be implemented in an indoor sporting environment, such as that used by the game of basketball.
