“Tell ‘im he’s dreamin’” The Olympic Games - a case of over-promising and under-delivering
[Extract] The Olympic Games can be described as a 'mega event' which Getz (2012) defines as "by way of their size or significance, are those that yield extraordinary high levels of tourism, media coverage, prestige or economic impact for the host community, venue or organisation." They are a magnet for idealists, opportunists and politicians. Big budgets and even bigger promises seem to be magnetically drawn to them. Events such as the Olympic Games provide an ideal breeding ground for White Elephants with their often-grandiose predictions of great benefits. Over-promising and under-delivering
The Demand for Money in Cote d’Ivoire: Evidence from the Cointegration Test.
This paper demonstrates that there is a long run equilibrium relationship between money supply 〖(M〗_1) and its main determinants, real income (GDP) and interest rate in Cote d’Ivoire. In order to investigate long-term relationship among these variables, we use Juselius and Johansen cointegration test with time series data covering the period of 1980-2007. The results show that there is long-term relationship among these variables as well as the linkage between them. Base from this result we found that only real money balances 〖(M〗_1) has significant long -run economic impact of variations in monetary policy in Cote d’Ivoire. However, the study also revealed that the effect of aggregate 〖(M〗_2) is not so stable linking with it determinants.Cointegration test, Money demand
Ekonomiczne uwarunkowania emigracji Polaków do krajów Europy Zachodniej
In the article author focused on the economical conditions of Poles mi- gration to the West Europe countries. Analyzed were economical reasons and consequences of Poles migration. Special attention was put to the geo- graphical structure of the Poles migration. Author also focused on the relations between immigrants from Poland and societies of the West European countries
The Jupiter icy moons explorer (JUICE): Complementarity of the payload in addressing the mission science objectives (abstract)
This presentation will give a status of the JUICE mission in the end of the definition phase, its science scenario, and the observation strategies that are foreseen with a strong emphasis on the complemen-tarity of the suite of instruments. To summarize, the instrument suite on-board JUICE will allow the inte-gration of datasets into a comprehensive multisensor / multitemporal / multiresolution view maximizing the scientific return of the data. This will be demonstrated using six examples that are briefly described in this abstract.Space EngineeringAerospace Engineerin
Voluntary Matching Grants can Forestall Social Dumping
The European economic integration leads to increasing mobility of factors, thereby threatening the stability of social transfer programs. This paper investigates the possibility to achieve by means of voluntary matching grants both the optimal allocation of factors and the optimal level of redistribution in the presence of factor mobility. We use a fiscal competition model a la Wildasin (1991) in which states differ in their technologies and preferences for redistribution. We first investigate a simple process in which the regulatory authority progressively raises the matching grants to the district choosing the lowest transfer and all districts respond optimally to the resulting change in transfers all around. This process is shown to increase total production and the level of reditribution. However it does not guarantee that all districts gain, nor that an efficient level of redistribution is attained. Assuming complete information among districts, we first derive the willingness of each district to match the contribution of other districts and we show that the aggregate willingness to pay for matching rates converges to zero when both the efficient level of redistribution and the efficient allocation of factors are achieved. We then describe the ajustment process for the matching rates that will lead districts to the efficient outcome and guarantee that everyone will gain.
Back to nature: Festivalgoer environmental beliefs and camping experience at non-urban festivals
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore festivalgoer/camper perceptions of and responses to the non-urban festival service environment (blended festivalscape). Design/methodology/approach – For this exploratory study a quantitative approach was adopted. A self-administered online survey was administered to recipient members of an Australian non-urban festival e-newsletter database resulting in 398 usable responses from festival campers. Findings – Environmental beliefs held by festival campers’ influenced their perceptions of naturescape, socialscape and overall satisfaction. Festival campers’ who attended more than once were found to have stronger pro-environmental beliefs than those who attended once. Festival camper perception of naturescape has a positive moderating influence leading to greater overall satisfaction and the likelihood of repeat attendance and positive word-of-mouth. Research limitations/implications – It is very important to know how festivalgoers perceive and relate to their festival service environment. Critical to the appeal and success of the non-urban festival is the alignment of festivalgoer environmental beliefs to the natural setting in which they are held. Limitations include use of a single case study context. Originality/value – This paper responds to lack of research on non-urban festivals when compared to urban festivals and the surprisingly little interest shown in the central role of natural settings and the camping experience. A closer understanding of the environmental beliefs of campers at non-urban festivals has the potential to provide beneficial outcomes for people, profit and planet
Mapping dust in the giant molecular cloud Orion A
The Sun is located close to the Galactic mid-plane, meaning that we observe the Galaxy through significant quantities of dust. Moreover, the vast majority of the Galaxy’s stars also lie in the disc, meaning that dust has an enormous impact on the massive astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic surveys of the Galaxy that are currently underway. To exploit the data from these surveys we require good three-dimensional maps of the Galaxy’s dust. We present a new method for making such maps in which we form the best linear unbiased predictor of the extinction at an arbitrary point based on the extinctions for a set of observed stars. This method allows us to avoid the artificial inhomogeneities (so-called ‘fingers of God’) and resolution limits that are characteristic of many published dust maps. Moreover, it requires minimal assumptions about the statistical properties of the interstellar medium. In fact, we require only a model of the first and second moments of the dust density field. The method is suitable for use with directly measured extinctions, such as those provided by the Rayleigh–Jeans colour excess method, and inferred extinctions, such as those provided by hierarchical Bayesian models like StarHorse. We test our method by mapping dust in the region of the giant molecular cloud Orion A. Our results indicate a foreground dust cloud at a distance of 350 pc, which has been identified in work by another author
The role of consumer self-concept in marketing festivals
Self-concept is an important yet underresearched aspect of the consumer behavior of the tourist/festivalgoer. Self-concept is explored via on-site focus groups at the Woodford Folk Festival in Queensland, Australia. Findings suggest that "festivalgoers" actively disassociate themselves from the "tourist" tag in reaction to its perception as a less authentic participation and potentially negative impact on social self-image. This qualitative study proposes that based on the findings, further research into self-concept and festivals is justified in terms of its potential to better focus on the provision of marketing messages that more closely align with festivalgoers ideal self-image and ideal social self-image
Ethnoimmigration: analytical survey
Article represents the analysis of processes of ethnic immi- gration, actual for Russia. The author conducted research of favorable and adverse law-enforcement cycles, the characterizing indicators are revealed. In article the reasons of ethnoimmigra- tion of social and economic and psy- chological character are considered. Author’s research vision is based on the generalized analysis, for the purpose of understanding of factors of modern processes of ethnoimmigration
