Radical C–C bond formation using sulfonium salts and light

    No full text
Sulfonium salts are playing an increasingly significant role in contemporary organic synthesis. In particular, the generation of radicals from sulfonium salts is a fundamental process in Nature and has been the subject of investigation for over 50 years. However, general synthetic methods that use sulfonium salts as radical precursors are rare. The advent of photoredox catalysis has triggered an upsurge of interest in the radical chemistry of sulfonium salts and this review surveys recent applications of aryl and alkyl sulfonium salts in light‐mediated, radical C–C bond formation

Editor-in-Chief\u27s Note: The Texas Water Journal invited Texas state Senator Charles Perry, Chair of the Senate Committee on Water and Rural Affairs, to share his thoughts on the role of water in the coming 87th legislative session of the Texas Legislature. In the upcoming legislative session, Senator Perry said Texas will be navigating the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the road to recovery and continuing water supply development. In the commentary, Senator Perry addresses how leveraging technology, public-private partnerships, and regulations will encourage the creation of new water sources while also expanding existing strategies. The opinion expressed in this commentary is the opinion of the individual author and not the opinion of the Texas Water Journal or the Texas Water Resources Institute. Citation: Perry C. 2020. Trifluoromethyl sulfoxides: New reagents for metal‐free C–H trifluoromethylthiolation

    No full text
Trifluoromethyl sulfoxides are a new class of trifluoromethylthiolating reagent. The sulfoxides engage in metal‐free C–H trifluoromethylthiolation with a range of (hetero)arenes. The method is also applicable to the functionalization of important compound classes, such as ligand derivatives and polyaromatics, and in the late‐stage trifluoromethylthiolation of medicines and agrochemicals. The isolation and characterization of a sulfonium salt intermediate supports an interrupted Pummerer reaction mechanism
