Maximum dynamic stress on bridges traversed by moving loads
Most current research on dynamic effects due to traffic load on simply supported bridges focuses on the mid-span section of the bridge, since this location corresponds to the worst static bending moment. However, the maximum total moment allowing for dynamics, may differ considerably from the maximum moment at mid-span. This paper shows how the maximum can occur in a section relatively far from mid-span with a significant difference in magnitude.Other funderJournal websitewww.bridgesjournal.comEuropean 6th Framework Programme ARCHES (Assessment and Rehabilitation of Central European Highway Structures)Publisher requires the journal URL to appear on the record: www.bridgesjournal.com. Letter to the editor by Co-Chair of Lavender Bridges
This January 30, 1986 letter to the editor signed Co-Chair, Lavender Bridges addresses the front-page article in the Western Carolinian from January 23 titled “Addressing gay concerns: Lavender Bridges recognized.” The author was misquoted in the article and wishes to set the record straight. Lavender Bridges, an anonymously founded student organization open to all individuals, aimed to promote awareness of lesbian and gay lifestyle, provide lesbian and gay resources, and increase communication with all students and community members. The first organizational meeting took place October 10, 1985 and was officially recognized by the office of Student Development on December 13, 1985. The last mention of the group appeared in the October 10, 1991 issue of the Western Carolinian.Dear Mr. Editor,
I'd like to calf your attention to
the significance of language and
the importance of the use of
particular words to convey the
intended meanings of one person
(or group) to another. Specifically,
I refer to the article about Lavender
Bridges in your January 23 issue.
The only quotation in the
article was carefully planned and
the words were carefully selected
with the intention to convey clearly
that this orgainzation would NOT
address "specific concerns of
sexual orientation" more than
broader concerns affecting all
individuals in a society regardless
of one's sexuality. I am adamant
that if you are to quote an
individual (and in this particular
case you were able to copy from a
written quote) their specific
selection of words must be
considered and carefully
conveyed. On behalf of Lavender
Bridges, I will reiterate the specific
and correct quote that was

The WESTERN CAROLINIAN is published
weekly by the Publication Board of Western Carolina
University. It is an independent student publication
intended for the article:
"While Lavender Bridges
specifically addresses the
concerns of lesbian and gay
students, attendance is not a
reflection of sexual orientation. The
group wishes to extend an
invitation to any individual who is
interested in learning more about
the issues surrounding a lesbian or
gay lifestyle.
In addition, sexual orientation
is not the only area of one's lifestyle.
We assume labels only to begin
defining and clarifying for
ourselves and others who it is that
we really are. For gay people, this
mea ns eve n creati ng new words or
using old words for newer
concepts. We are no more strictly
sexual beings than bisexuals or
heterosexuals. What we are
though, has been overshadowed
by the labels which have been
used to create frightening myths
about us.
Sincerely,
Co-Chair, Lavender Bridge

Letter from Nikki Bridges, to National Coalition for Redress/Reparations, May 13, 1981
Letter from Nikki Bridges to the National Coalition for Redress/Reparations (NCRR) regarding Bridges donation requests and a poem. The Jim Matsuoka Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress Collection includes brochures, meeting notes and agendas, publications, booklets, and other material related to the Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress (NCRR), formally known as the National Coalition for Redress/Reparations. The National Coalition for Redress/Reparations was officially formed on July 12, 1980, and included members of the Los Angeles Community Coalition for Redress/Reparations (LACCRR), Japanese Community Progressive Alliance (JCPA), Tule Lake Committee, Nihonmachi Outreach Committee, the Asian/Pacific Student Union, and other members of the community. The material was collected by Jim Matsuoka, a founding member of the organization. Matsuoka also served on the board and was the treasurer. In addition to the NCRR material, the collection also contains event flyers and Day of Remembrance material. For issues of the Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress newsletter "Banner" published after 2007, visit the NCRR website at https://ncrr-la.org/
Literature review on the images of the nurse and nursing in the media
This study concentrates on the images of the nurse and nursing seen most commonly in the media and attempts to trace the images back to their origins and to explain their continued use, despite the rapidly changing role of the nurse in today's world. The images have been derived mostly from the historical roots of nursing and sometimes as a reaction to the increasing influence of the feminist movement. The author takes a look at the four main images of the nurse seen in the media, which are the ministering angel, the battleaxe, the naughty nurse and the doctor's handmaiden and then goes on to take a brief look at the other images commonly perpetuated by the media. The author summarizes the probable effects of the media stereotypes on nurses themselves and the service they provide and also takes a look at attempts to dispel these stereotypes
Methodology for Diagnostic Load Testing
This chapter deals with the methodology for diagnostic load testing. All aspects of diagnostic load testing that are shared with other load testing methods have been discussed in Part II. In this chapter, the particularities of diagnostic load testing of new and existing bridges are discussed. These elements include loading procedures, monitoring behavior during the test, reviewing test data, calibrating analytical models, and evaluating the test results.Accepted Author ManuscriptConcrete Structure
Linked Data based video annotation and browsing for distance learning
We present a pair of prototype tools that enable users to mark up video with annotations and later explore related materials using Semantic Web and Linked Data approaches. The first tool helps academics preparing Open University course materials to mark up videos with information about the subject matter and audio-visual content. The second tool enables users, such as students or academics, to find video and other materials relevant to their study
Durability of pretensioned concrete girders in coastal climate bridges: Basis for better maintenance and future design
This study was based on findings from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's Bridge Management System and field investigations on corrosion damage in pretensioned Norwegian standard I-beam (NIB) girders in 227 coastal climate bridges. The main durability design parameters are summarized and related to regulations over the last 80 years. Environmental exposure is discussed in the light of the global, local, and micro climate. We found that 51% of the bridges have girder corrosion damage. The percentage is highest for bridges built when the cover thickness required was lowest. Cover thickness below that required (resulting from production faults) caused 74% of corrosion damage. Most of the severe chloride-induced corrosion damage in bridges was found in the inner NIB girders, particularly in the support-zones and their vicinity. This can be due to interaction between geometry and exposure. Corrosion of reinforcement in support-zones can impact structural behavior, particularly NIB girder shear performance.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Mechanic
