Generalised linear mixed models analysis of risk factors for contamination of Danish broiler flocks with Salmonella typhimurium
No full textWe present a retrospective observational study of risk factors associated with the occurrence of Salmonella typhimurium (ST) in Danish broiler flocks. The study is based on recordings from 1994 in the ante-mortem database maintained by the Danish Poultry Council. The epidemiological units are the broiler flocks (about 4000 flocks) which are clustered within producers. Broiler flocks with ST-infected parent stocks show increased risk of salmonella infection, and also the hatchery affects the salmonella status significantly. Among the rearing factors, only the use of medicine as well as the time of rearing, and the sampling method are significant. Epidemiological control would seem most efficient on starting at the top levels of the production hierarchy from which a major part of the ST contamination is derived. A secondary purpose of the study is to evaluate different statistical approaches and software for the analysis of a moderately-sized data set of veterinary origin. We compare the results from five analyses of the generalised linear mixed model (GLMM) type. The first observation is that the results agree reasonably well and lead to similar conclusions. A closer look reveals certain patterns of bias and estimation accuracy that correspond well with theoretical findings and practical experience reported in the statistical literature

DAUPHIN containment data report
No full textThe DAUPHIN event was detonated in hole U9cq of the Nevada Test Site. The DAUPHIN device had a depth-of-burial (DOB) of 319 m in the Tunnel Beds Tuffs of area 9, about 200 m above the Paleozoic formation and about 300 m above the standing water level. Stemming of the 2.44 m diameter emplacement is described. A log of the stemming operations was maintained by Holmes & Narver. Detonation time was 08:50 PST on November 14, 1980, and collapse progressed to the surface at about 27. 5 minutes after the detonation resulting in an asymmetric crater having a mean radius of 71.9 m and a maximum depth of 13.0 m. No radiation arrivals were detected above ground and the DAUPHIN containment was considered successful

CFD-DEM Modelling: Clogging of Triplet Particles in a Microchannel with a Constriction
No full textClogging represents an important issue in the field of chemical engineering, particularly concerning microfluidic technologies such as microreactors. This phenomenon consists in the the interruption of the flow in confined geometries due to the complete blockage of the channel cross-section. Since experiments can be expensive and difficult to implement, mathematical modelling has become more and more used. In this work, the numerical method called CFD-DEM (combining Computational Fluid Dynamics and Discrete Element Method) is employed to simulate clogging in a microchannel with sudden contraction, considering a suspension of triplet particles and constant pressure drop. The influence of particle volume fraction, cohesion energy density, and pressure drop on the flow rate is investigated. A study concerning the orientation of the triplets in the microchannel is also carried out
