A novel three-phase UPS system with a single-phase resonant HF link

    No full text
This paper presents a new three-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system based on a single-phase resonant high frequency (HF) link and a single-phase transformer. The three-phase output voltage is constructed and regulated from a three-phase cycloconverter fed from the constant amplitude, constant frequency link voltage. The generation of a novel switching stategy for the three-phase cycloconverter is presented. The simulation of the proposed system is carried out and verified with experimental results

Gender Across Cultures: An Interview with Nonie Darwish

    No full text
Nonie Darwish grew up in Gaza and Cairo. When she was 8 years old her father, a high-ranking military officer, was killed in an act of terrorism, making him a shahid, or martyr for jihad. Darwish came to America when she was 30 and was struck by the freedoms enjoyed in her new country; she has felt compelled to speak out for tolerance since 9/11. She is the author of Now They Call Me Infidel: Why I Renounced Jihad for America, Israel, and the War on Terror and the originator of the group Arabs for Israel (www.arabsforisrael.com). Darwish’s second book, Cruel and Usual Punishment, about the conditions of Muslim women under Sharia (Islamic law), will be published in 2008. Darwish spoke with our editor on February 29, 2008

Palestine Song: Mahmoud Darwish and Mourid Barghouti

    No full text
This chapter explores a new form of poetic autobiography by Palestinian poets Mahmoud Darwish and Mourid Barghouti. The chapter explores the relationship of the poets to Palestine and its effects on autobiographical form in Darwish’s Memory for Forgetfulness, his 1986 memoir of the Israeli siege of Beirut, and Mural, his 1999 autobiographical epic focusing on mortality and Palestine. Barghouti’s memoirs I Saw Ramallah and I Was Born There, I Was Born Here explore the poet’s return to Palestine. Darwish and Barghouti rework the genre to explore the life of the poet in relation to Palestine and the tension between the poet’s solitude and his public role.</p

A coupled finite volume solver for the solution of incompressible flows on unstructured grids

    No full text
This paper reports on a newly developed fully coupled pressure-based algorithm for the solution of laminar incompressible flow problems on collocated unstructured grids. The implicit pressure-velocity coupling is accomplished by deriving a pressure equation in a procedure similar to a segregated SIMPLE algorithm using the Rhie-Chow interpolation technique and assembling the coefficients of the momentum and continuity equations into one diagonally dominant matrix. The extended systems of continuity and momentum equations are solved simultaneously and their convergence is accelerated by using an algebraic multigrid solver. The performance of the coupled approach as compared to the segregated approach, exemplified by SIMPLE, is tested by solving five laminar flow problems using both methodologies and comparing their computational costs. Results indicate that the number of iterations needed by the coupled solver for the solution to converge to a desired level on both structured and unstructured meshes is grid independent. For relatively coarse meshes, the CPU time required by the coupled solver on structured grid is lower than the CPU time required on unstructured grid. On dense meshes however, this is no longer true. For low and moderate values of the grid aspect ratio, the number of iterations required by the coupled solver remains unchanged, while the computational cost slightly increases. For structured and unstructured grid systems, the required number of iterations is almost independent of the grid size at any value of the grid expansion ratio. Recorded CPU time values show that the coupled approach substantially reduces the computational cost as compared to the segregated approach with the reduction rate increasing as the grid size increases. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. Mural (after Mahmoud Darwish)

    No full text
Mural is a collaborative composition for solo flute. The project is devised by myself and developed in collaboration with Lebanese flautist and composer, Wissam Boustany. This project continues my ongoing exploration of 'Music as Method', which seeks to explore relations between musical forms (from classical musical forms to free improvisation) and socio-political events. Works in this series include Fugue, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, A Beautiful Living Thing, Flattening the Curve, Audi Altera Partem. These projects investigate the ways in which musical modalities - counterpoint, duet, harmony, dissonance - offer metaphors and models for socio-political morphologies, and underpin a radical democratic politics of listening. Mural is the title of a long poem by Mahmoud Darwish, but the composition for flute itself is based upon the transposition of a line from a different poem by Darwish, the poem ‘I Belong There’: ‘I have learned to dismantle all the words in order to draw from them a single word: Home.’ Following Darwish, the line from the poem itself has been ‘dismantled’ in that individual letters are transposed into musical notation to develop an initial phrase (or potential refrain), Mural is developed in collaboration with Lebanese flautist and composer, Wissam Boustany. Boustany is an established musician and teacher who teaches according to A Method Called Love. Boustany will respond to the initial phrase and develop an extended composition for flute which we will discuss and shape together as rehearsals progress towards a planned public recital in Rome in late Spring 2025. The public recital of Mural performed by Wissam Boustany took place on 27 May 2025 at the site of Love: Dante Desire Line Poetry Path by Birrell and Harding, commissioned for Lavinia exhibition at Loggia dei Vini, the Villa Borghese Gardens, Rome 2025-2026

Performance comparison of the NWF and DC methods for implementing High-Resolution schemes in a fully coupled incompressible flow solver

    No full text
This paper reports on the use of the Normalized Weighting Factor (NWF) method and the Deferred Correction (DC) approach for the implementation of High Resolution (HR) convective schemes in an implicit, fully coupled, pressure-based flow solver. Four HR schemes are realized within the framework of the NWF and DC methods and employed to solve the following three laminar flow problems: (i) lid-driven flow in a square cavity, (ii) sudden expansion in a square cavity, and (iii) flow in a planar T-junction, over three grid systems with sizes of 104, 5 × 104, and 3 × 105 control volumes. The merit of both approaches is demonstrated by comparing the computational costs required to solve these problems using the various HR schemes on the different grid systems. Whereas previous attempts to use the NWF method in a segregated flow solver failed to produce converged solutions, current results clearly demonstrate that both methods are suitable for utilization in a coupled flow solver. In terms of CPU efficiency, there is no global and consistent superiority of any method over another even though the DC method outperformed the NWF method in two of the three test problems solved. © 2010 Elsevier Inc. Prestation - En undersökning av begreppet prestation i skådespelarens repetitionsprocess.

    No full text
