When I was asked to write a piece for this book the thing that came to mind was a series of events and moments that I experienced whilst documenting what was taking place in Cumbria during the first seven months of 2001. The actual sequence of events has blurred in terms of sequence but I have tried here to put across something of the atmosphere of the time. In this chapter, independent photographer John Darwell writes about his experiences month-by-month between February and August 2001, photographing the effects of the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak in Cumbria for his 'Dark Days' series. Includes three of Darwell's photographs. The book is a modern social history, a compendium of fifty foot and mouth disease testimonies. It was the brainchild of BBC Radio Cumbria presenter Caz Graham, who hosted the two-hour 'Nightline' show for a month at the height of the epidemic

In-depth interview featured in online magazine Photomonitor on photographer John Darwell's 'After Schwitters' project. Conducted by Walter Lewis the interview explores the motivations behind the work and the decision making process involved. His most recent work, After Schwitters, appears to show a change in emphasis to a self-reflective, almost meditative, practice. Walter Lewis, Research Associate at the WALK Centre at the University of Sunderland, met up with him to discuss

    ‘Working Lives’ by John Darwell

This Manchester issue of Occupational Medicine features a selection of photographs by John Darwell. ‘Working Lives’ was commissioned in 1986 by Stockport Museums and Gallery Service as part of ‘British Industry Year.’ John’s aim was to look at the clothing industries around the Stockport area, historically famous as a centre of the hatting industry, but also other traditional industries such as leather production and clog making. ‘Looking back on these images from a gap of almost 20 years it seems impossible to imagine such working conditions today; in fact one of the locations is now a museum! As society has changed so have people’s workplaces, and interestingly, their physicality. It would be fascinating for me as explorer and documentor to be offered the opportunity to revisit these locations to see what has changed over the intervening period, but perhaps what would be of even more interest would be to see what hasn’t.’ John Darwell is an independent photographer working with museums and galleries on projects that reflect his interest in social and industrial change and his concern for the environment. He is a lecturer and researcher on the BA Hons Photography course at the Cumbria Institute of the Arts
