    Madeleine Kelly: Entangled Flashes / Verwickelte Blitze is the exhibition catalogue for a solo exhibition of artworks by Kelly held at Galerie Spinnerei Archiv Massiv, Leipzig, Germany 25 July – 31 August 2024. The project was funded by CREATE NSW and The University of Sydney, Australia. This catalogue features texts by specially commissioned Australian author, Clare Murphy, and German art historian, Sara Tröster Klemm. Additional texts include a statement and poems by the artist. The catalogue includes texts in both English and German with colour illustrations of new works on show and another 16 historical works.     Variation in emergency percutaneous coronary intervention in ventilated patients in the UK: Insights from a national database

    AIMS: Pre-procedural ventilation is a marker of high risk in PCI patients. Causes include out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and cardiogenic shock. OHCA occurs in approximately 60,000 patients in the UK per annum. No consensus exists regarding the need/timing of coronary angiography ± revascularization without ST elevation. The aim was to describe the national variation in the rate of emergency PCI in ventilated patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using the UK national database for PCI in 2013, we identified all procedures performed as 'emergency' or 'salvage' for whom ventilation had been initiated before the PCI. Of the 92,589 patients who underwent PCI, 1342 (5.5%) fulfilled those criteria. There was wide variation in practice. There was no demonstrable relationship between the number of emergency PCI patients with pre-procedure ventilation per annum and (i) total number of PPCIs in a unit (r=-0.186), and (ii) availability of 24h PCI, (iii) on-site surgical cover. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated a wide variation in practice across the UK in rates of pre-procedural ventilation in emergency PCI. The majority of individuals will have suffered an OHCA. In the absence of a plausible explanation for this discrepant practice, it is possible that (a) some patients presenting with OHCA that may benefit from revascularization are being denied treatment and (b) procedures may be being undertaken that are futile. Further prospective data are needed to aid in production of guidelines aiming at standardized care in OHCA

    This research which is about the Issues Involved in Designing ESP Courses for Kuwait Business Institute Students with Special Reference to Computer Science Students consists of seven chapters. The first chapter introduces Kuwait Business Institute. The second offers the historical background of ESP and a survey of its theoretical bases. The third gives an account of the three stages of KBI's life span along with a critical appreciation of the English language teaching materials used. The fourth presents questionnaires and constructed interviews used in identifying needs of employers, teachers and graduates and expounds their results. The fifth presents approaches to text analysis and a functional analysis of two chapters selected from two textbooks used by KBI computer science students. The sixth goes into the classroom with computer science teachers and students and presents an analysis of three lectures by three computer science teachers. The last chapter presents conclusions from a synthesis of findings. The findings call for the rejection and replacement of current English Language teaching materials. They also support a broader needs analysis. This should include views, concerning demands made by the language of the computer science academic courses content, of teachers, students and employers. It should also include the results of text analysis component of the relevant academic courses content. Recommendations and suggestions for further research when designing ESP courses for KBI computer science students in particular and students of different specialisations in general are made

    Nonlinear behaviour of pulsating white dwarfs

    Bibliography : p. 199-207.Using a phenomenological approach, I have investigated the nonlinear properties of the pulsations of two white dwarfs, namely DA G29-38 and DB GD358. The data at my disposal comprised numerous single- and multi-sites time series photometric campaigns, including light curves from four Whole Earth Telescope runs conducted respectively in 1988 and 1992 on G29-38, and in 1990 and 1994 on GD358. Thanks to their length and quality, several of these individual data sets have the beating between the excited eigenmodes resolved. Amplitude changes are nevertheless visible between these various amplitude spectra, suggesting the presence of intrinsic nonlinear processes. However, I showed that only when the spectral changes are drastic have time-dependent nonlinear phenomena to be invoked; no matter how long the data sets, mild seasonal amplitude variations can often be accounted for by beating between the eigen-modes and high order cross-frequencies when harmonic distortion is strong enough. From third order of perturbation, cross-frequencies naturally appear in the direct vicinity of the normal modes, which not only alter the simple eigenmultiplet structures thus rendering the mode identification more difficult, but also generate long and complex beating processes. In GD358, for instance, 153 such third order combination frequencies are expected to appear in the frequency range of each eigentriplet; a light curve spanning at least 9 months is thus necessary to resolve the period structure of this star. Drastic spectral changes were nevertheless recorded in both G29s38 and GD358 which could not be accounted for by such high order beating processes. I could securely conclude that the pulsations of both these stars experience intrinsic amplitude variations on time-scales ranging from days to years, suggesting that different nonlinear processes dominate the evolution of the pulsations at different time

    Spasticity Assessment in Cerebral Palsy

    Spasticity is an important, but not the only, component contributing to the increased joint resistance experienced by children with spastic cerebral palsy. Conventional clinical spasticity scales, based on physical examination of the passive muscle, are easy to apply in pediatric populations. Unfortunately, these have low reliability and are unable to differentiate between the different components of joint hyper-resistance. To correctly differentiate spasticity from other neural and non-neural contributions, instrumented assessments that integrate electrophysiological and biomechanical measures are required. In the last 15 years, great advancements in clinically applicable, instrumented assessments were made. However, the translation from research to clinical setting is lagging behind. Simple, yet accurate, instrumented assessments are expected to greatly advance clinical practice in terms of treatment planning based on etiological classification and subsequent outcome evaluation. In addition, the transfer of the research findings to functional outcome would require to extend our research agenda to include assessments of hyperreflexia in the active muscle.
