Parliamentary Opposition in the Situation of Conflict and Its Implications for the Working of the Government in Jammu and Kashmir

    No full text
Parliamentary opposition in the Kashmir valley frequently politicises the role of government by factoring in the contentious issues from the conflict politics. It questions the relevance and the legitimacy of the parties in power by setting the conflict politics as the main agenda before the government. The tactical representation of the conflict by the opposition parties, however, mainly serves to undermine the mainstream politics because of the presumed incapacity of the government to provide immediate solutions. The article aims to highlight that parliamentary political opposition more often than not engages uncritically with the emerging conflict situations without carving its own space for constructive political action. Nevertheless, its popular mandate allows it to be more effective and balanced in facing the conflicting parties and urging them to shun the attitude inimical to the peace and stability in the state. The article also highlights that government needs to accept the existence of hitherto absent parliamentary opposition more willingly and shun the averse attitude to evolve the space for concordant political action. Besides, it should not allow the whole space of political contention to slip into the exclusive domain of the opposition parties which only allows them to put it to the instrumental use against it. </jats:p

A Multimodal Ensemble Machine Learning Approach to COVID-19 Misinformation Detection in Twitter

    No full text
The emergence of social media platforms has unquestionably altered the manner in which people ingest information, with tweets now functioning as the primary source for news and other types of content. However, the proliferation of false news on these platforms has become a major concern, as it poses a severe threat to both individuals and society as a whole. Consequently, it is crucial to develop efficient methods for detecting false news in tweets. This study presents a novel hybrid approach that integrates the textual content of tweets with auxiliary features to detect false news. Our approach uses a pre-trained transformer-based language model, COVID-twitter-BERT to encode the text content of tweets into a dense representation that captures their meaning. The auxiliary features, such as sentiment score, credibility score, engagement score, average retweet count, average favourite count, and average followers of followers, are fed into a stacking classifier-based model to predict the trustworthiness score of the tweet. By combining the predictions of both models, we demonstrate that our approach outperforms baseline methods, emphasising the significance of utilising both text content and auxiliary features for Twitter false news detection. Our research considerably advances the field of detecting false news by demonstrating the effectiveness of integrating transformer-based language models and machine learning models for this task. Our findings provide valuable insights for improving the detection of false news on social media

Depression is a disorder of major public health importance, in term of its prevalence and the suffering, dysfunction, morbidity and economic burden. The study aims to assess the prevalence of depression among rural population of selected village. Subjects (N=92) who volunteered to participate in the study were recruited. The research design adopted for the study was descriptive survey design. Depression was assessed by using a self reported depression scale (CES-D). result shown majority of them were between 16-60 yrs. The overall mean score of depressive affect is 17.04 and it was higher in illiterates. Among the dimensions somatic symptoms has mean score of 19.82 and it was higher in females. In association with demographic characteristics illiterates, females, married, nuclear family, middle class and laborers shows statistically significant association with depressive symptoms. The sudy concludes that prevalence of depression among the rural population is common especially in females, nuclear families and low socio economics due to variety of emotional and physical problems hence there is clear need to increase mental health services and to integrate this with general health services

The present study was initiated to assess the attitude of local people living near the forests in ten (10) districts of Kashmir valley during the year 2016 -2018. The main aim was to assess the perception of people regarding wildlife conservation and general knowledge of local populace in this regard. It was also to know about Human-Wildlife conflict and the mitigation measures from the local point of view. About one thousand (1000) people belonging to the age group 18 to 76 years were questioned with hundred (100) from each district making sure each village of the districts belonging to all the five (5) wildlife divisions of Kashmir valley gets covered. population trend, 71% of the people were of the opinion that the population of the wild animal is increasing while the 19% of the people responded negative and 10% of population were not sure and gave no answer. An interesting find during the study was that Leopards and Wolves kill and consume the livestock, but the Black Bears go on silly rampage killing maximum and consuming minimum. About 47 % of the people from all the 10 districts held an opinion that sheep/goat were the cattle depredated most followed by cattle (cow, ox, buffalo etc.) about 31 % by Leopards and Black Bears and horsed around 14% by Leopards. Only 8% of the people reported others which included poultry, ducks and pets by Porcupines, Jackals and Foxes.Around 23% of the people guarding their fields using Dokas (Machans) said that this was by far the most effective method in keeping wild-animals away, 19% of the people are using watch dogs, 14% of the people are using the scare crows, 10% of the people were using wind chimes, around 11% that of the people were using methods of lighting fire as it is believed that fire has proved to be one of the best deterrent for wild animals

Liposarcoma of the Spermatic Cord: A Rare Entity

    Get PDF
Primary malignant tumours of spermatic cord are rare. The liposarcoma of spermatic cord is a rare entity and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report a case of forty five-year-old male with huge left inguinoscrotal swelling. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of swelling revealed the diagnosis of a liposarcoma. The patient was subjected to radical orchidectomy and wide excision. Histopathological examination (HPE) of the resected specimen reported a well-differentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord and confirmed the diagnosis

The concept of information theory originated when an attempt was made to create a theoretical model for the transmission of information theory of various kinds. Information theory is a branch of mathematical theory of probability and is applied in wide variety of fields: communication theory, thermodynamics, econometrics, operation research and psychology etc. The development presented here have represented a step towards generalizing various measures of information, their characterization, application in coding theory and inference.Digital copy of Thesis.University of Kashmir

Giant Intrapulmonary Teratoma: A Rare Case

    Get PDF
Teratomas are tumors composed of tissues derived from more than one germ cell line. Pulmonary teratomas are rare and commonly involve the upper lobe of the left lung. Criteria for pulmonary origin are the exclusion of a gonadal or other extragonadal primary site and origin entirely within the lung. We report a case of a giant pulmonary teratoma in a 2-year-old male child and review the relevant literature
