Osteomyelitis and arthritis caused by Salmonella typhimurium in a crow
Salmonella typhimurium was isolated from an arthritic elbow joint of a crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) which also had bilateral osteomyelitis of proximal tibias. The prevalence of Salmonella organisms in wild birds is reviewed briefly.LR: 20031114; PUBM: Print; JID: 0244160; ppublishSource type: Electronic(1

The pathology of chronic ammonia toxicity in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson
Two groups of rainbow trout fingerlings were exposed for 90 days to 0.2 and 0.4 mg/l of un-ionized ammonia, respectively. Several fish exposed to the higher concentration soon developed clinical signs suggestive of a neurological dysfunction but subsequently recovered. No lesion attributable to ammonia was seen in the gills of any of the fish. This raises questions about the precise role of ammonia in the production of gill diseases in intensively cultured trout..RE: 25 ref.; RN: 7664-41-7; SC: ZA; CA; VE; EC; 0V; 0ISource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0140-7775&isbn=&volume=7&issue=3&spage=199&pages=199-205&date=1984&title=Journal%20of%20Fish%20Diseases&atitle=The%20pathology%20of%20chronic%20ammonia%20toxicity%20in%20rainbow%20trout%2c%20Salmo%20gairdneri%20Richardson.&aulast=Daoust&pid=%3Cauthor%3EDaoust%2c%20P%20Y%3bFerguson%2c%20H%20W%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19842244566%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3
Nodular gill disease: a unique form of proliferative gill disease in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson
In an outbreak of proliferative gill disease in laboratory rainbow trout fingerlings lesions were multifocal among filaments and uniquely severe in the distal region of affected filaments, forming nodules. This contrasted with the more common forms of proliferative gill disease in Ontario, such as bacterial gill disease, in which lesions are diffuse along and among filaments. The cause is unknown, although cells with a very distinctive morphology were closely associated with the lesions..RE: 22 ref.; SC: ZA; CA; VE; 0V; 0ISource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0140-7775&isbn=&volume=8&issue=6&spage=511&pages=511-522&date=1985&title=Journal%20of%20Fish%20Diseases&atitle=Nodular%20gill%20disease%3a%20a%20unique%20form%20of%20proliferative%20gill%20disease%20in%20rainbow%20trout%2c%20Salmo%20gairdneri%20Richardson.&aulast=Daoust&pid=%3Cauthor%3EDaoust%2c%20P%20Y%3bFerguson%2c%20H%20W%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19862272504%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3
Potential for recovery in nodular gill disease of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson
Nodular gill disease characterized by severe multifocal epithelial hyperplasia was diagnosed in a group of rainbow trout fingerlings. Gills of a large proportion of fish transferred from the affected tank to smaller aquaria showed a marked decrease in severity of the lesions after 2 months. Repair of hyperplastic lesions may occur in various forms of proliferative gill disease, provided that the basement membrane lining the filaments and lamellae remains intact..RE: 11 ref.; SC: ZA; CA; VE; 0V; 0ISource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0140-7775&isbn=&volume=9&issue=4&spage=313&pages=313-318&date=1986&title=Journal%20of%20Fish%20Diseases&atitle=Potential%20for%20recovery%20in%20nodular%20gill%20disease%20of%20rainbow%20trout%2c%20Salmo%20gairdneri%20Richardson.&aulast=Daoust&pid=%3Cauthor%3EDaoust%2c%20P%20Y%3bFerguson%2c%20H%20W%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19862285526%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3
Severe chronic neck injury caused by a snare in a Coyote, Canis latrans
A two-year-old male Coyote, Canis latrans, in poor body condition was found in a moribund state with a snare deeply embedded in the ventral portion of its neck, more than a month after the official end of the trapping season on Prince Edward Island. This snare had presumably malfunctioned, and the cable had cut through the soft tissues of the neck as well as the trachea and had obstructed both jugular veins and both common carotid arteries but had largely spared both vagosympathetic trunks. Cases like this illustrate the need to continue to work on improving the efficiency of trapping methods, through research and trapper education.PT: J; CR: *DEP FOR AFF INT T, 1997, AGR INT HUM TRAPP ST, P31 ANDREWS PLR, 1992, NEUROANATOMY PHYSL A, P280 BENZ GW, 2001, CAN FIELD NAT, V115, P506 BODDICKER ML, 1982, P VERT PEST C, V10, P50 ESLER M, 1992, CLIN AUTON RES, V2, P133 EVANS HE, 1993, MILLERS ANATOMY DOG, P219 GUTHERY FS, 1978, J WILDLIFE MANAGE, V42, P457 GUYTON AC, 1996, TXB MED PHYSL, P107 PHILLIPS RL, 1996, WILDLIFE SOC B, V24, P107 PROULX G, 1990, WILDLIFE SOC B, V18, P27 PROULX G, 1991, N AM WILDLIFE NATURA, V56, P387 SCOTT DW, 2001, MULLER KIRKS SMALL A, P1 WHISNANT JP, 1956, AM J PHYSIOL, V186, P275; NR: 13; TC: 0; J9: CAN FIELD-NATUR; PG: 4; GA: 927NLSource type: Electronic(1
Proventricular impaction associated with nonsuppurative encephalomyelitis and ganglioneuritis in two Canada geese
Two wild Canada geese (Branta canadensis) in an extremely emaciated state and with severe proventricular food impaction also had a nonsuppurative encephalomyelitis and ganglioneuritis. The condition in these two birds was morphologically similar to psittacine proventricular dilatation, a recently identified disease of psittacine birds.LR: 20041117; PUBM: Print; JID: 0244160; ppublishSource type: Electronic(1
Interactive mortality factors in common loons from Maritime Canada
Between August 1992 and November 1995, 31 moribund or dead common loons (Gavia immer) found in the three Maritime provinces of Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island) were necropsied. Eight of these birds were in good body condition and died acutely from drowning or trauma. The remaining 23 birds were in poor body condition and had either chronic lead poisoning, respiratory mycosis, or oil contamination of their plumage. Loons in poor body condition had significantly higher numbers of intestinal trematodes and significantly higher levels of total renal mercury than loons in good body condition. Therefore, poor body condition in many loons was associated with two or more concurrent potential disease processes, although we could not establish a cause-effect relationship among these processes in individual birds. These results suggest that mortality in chronically ill wild animals can result from synergism among several potentially debilitating agents present in their environment.LR: 20061115; PUBM: Print; JID: 0244160; 0 (Petroleum); ppublishSource type: Electronic(1
Multicentric intramuscular lipomatosis/fibromatosis in free-flying white-fronted and Canada geese
Over a period of 9 yr, seven white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) and one Canada goose (Branta canadensis) with multiple intramuscular mesenchymal tumors were encountered in Saskatchewan (Canada) and one similarly affected Canada goose was seen on Prince Edward Island (Canada). The tumors in these birds consisted either of adipose tissue, fibroblastic tissue, or a mixture of both types of tissues. The high prevalence of this condition in white-fronted geese suggested a genetic influence.LR: 20031114; PUBM: Print; JID: 0244160; ppublishSource type: Electronic(1
