Preliminary uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the Molten Salt Fast Reactor steady-state using a Polynomial Chaos Expansion method
No full textIn this work, we present the results of a preliminary uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis study of the Molten Salt Fast Reactor (MSFR) behavior at steady-state performed by applying a non-intrusive Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE) approach. An in-house high-fidelity multi-physics simulation tool is used as reactor reference model. Considering several thermal-hydraulics and neutronics parameters as stochastic inputs, with a limited number of samples we build a PCE meta-model able to reproduce he reactor response in terms of effective multiplication factor, maximum, minimum, and average salt temperatures, and complete salt temperature distribution. The probability density functions of the responses are constructed and analyzed, highlighting strengths and issues of the current MSFR design. The sensitivity study highlights the relative importance of each input parameter, thus providing useful indications for future research efforts. The analysis on the whole temperature field shows that the heat exchanger can be a critical component, so its design requires particular care.</p

Author Meets Critics: Sandra Braman
No full textThe publication of Sandra Braman’s Change of State signals the importance of the topic of information policy to the field of information studies. It also illustrates both the power and necessity of the kind of inter-disciplinary analysis that characterizes the field. This panel will provide an opportunity for both structured debate and lively discussion around Change of State and the important arguments it contains. Perhaps the most important one that it makes is that “trends in information policy both manifest and trigger change in the nature of governance itself.” That is, Braman points to how information flows have radically altered the nature of the traditional nation-state and its ability to exercise power (or fails to, as the case may be).
Because of i-Schools’ strong connections with the professional world of information institutions, it is particularly important for graduates to understand the far-reaching implications of this argument. On a practical level, graduates need to become conversant with both the varied manifestations of information policy, and the mechanisms by which such policy is enacted. Change of State provides a highly useful synthesis of all the major debates in the field of information policy (including identity, immigration, innovation policy, etc.), organizing them into a comprehensive analytical framework, along with extensive bibliographic essays.
The format of this session will involve each speaker presenting a 15 minute paper which will discuss Change of State from their own disciplinary perspective. Prof. Braman will then respond to the papers. The presentations will be followed by a question and answer period with the audience. The goal is to offer both structured debate around key arguments presented in the book, while offering an opportunity for the audience to interact with the speakers. Including Value Orientations in Choice Models to Estimate Benefits of Wildlife Management Policies
No full textValue orientations towards wildlife affect the way people perceive nature and their connection with animals. In particular, the social psychological literature within the environmental field suggests that there are two main orientations of people towards wildlife: mutualism and domination. This body of literature has shown how wildlife value orientations can serve as predictors of attitudes and behaviours toward wildlife and form the foundation of human-wildlife conflicts. A common approach in the non-market valuation literature is to include information on attitudes and values in the deterministic part of the utility function, leading to problems of endogeneity bias. To avoid this, analysts have recently shifted their attention to approaches based on latent variables. This paper presents an application of a latent variable and latent class model, to understand how latent orientations influence choices, in a case study in the Italian Alps. The intuition is that different underlying individual value orientation affects preferences and the level of willingness to pay and should be therefore considered in choice models. The latent variable is used to explain class membership of respondents. Results indicate that the latent variable has a significant effect in class allocation and that the hybrid model performs better than a simple two class model. Results provide guidance on the social acceptability of management interventions and can support public decision-makers in the modulation of wildlife management policies for balancing the needs of conservation and outdoor recreation, explicitly considering existing human-wildlife conflicts
