Review of: Eva Blome: Reinheit und Vermischung. Literarisch-kulturelle Entwürfe von ‚Rasse‘ und Sexualität (1900–1930). Köln u.a.: Böhlau Verlag 2011.
For the first time, Eva Blome’s comprehensive dissertation deals with the interdiscoursive transformations of the topic ‘miscegenation’ in the German colonial context from a literary studies perspective. In discussing the German-language colonial literature from around 1900 and the art and literature of European primitivism and in conclusively dealing with theories of culture and race of the Weimar Republic, the author focuses on the usage of ‘miscegenation’ as a biopolitical and poetological figure of reasoning. The book’s most central merits are that it fills a research niche and that it poses additional research questions on the topic of ‘racially’ transgressive sexuality
Effective chemical processes in porous media
In the book by U. Hornung, Chapter 6, the author proposes an homogenization strategy for the effective behavior of some chemical processes involving adsorption and reactions arising in porous media. Rigorous proofs of the convergence results are given in the case of linear adsorption rates and linear chemical reactions. The author leaves as an open question the case of a nonlinear adsorption rate. Our goal in this paper is to study two well-known examples of such nonlinear models, namely the so-called Freundlich and Langmuir kineticsDGESECDepto. de Análisis Matemático y Matemática AplicadaFac. de Ciencias MatemáticasTRUEpu

Obesity, Osteoarthritis, and Myokines: Balancing Weight Management Strategies, Myokine Regulation, and Muscle Health
Obesity and osteoarthritis (OA) are increasingly prevalent conditions that are intricately linked, with each exacerbating the other’s pathogenesis and worsening patient outcomes. This review explores the dual impact of obesity on OA, highlighting the role of excessive weight in aggravating joint degeneration and the limitations OA imposes on physical activity, which further perpetuates obesity. The role of muscle tissue, particularly the release of myokines during physical activity, is examined in the context of OA and obesity. Myokines such as irisin, IL-6, and myostatin are discussed for their roles in metabolic regulation, inflammation, and tissue repair, offering insights into their potential therapeutic targets. This review emphasizes the importance of supervised weight management methods in parallel with muscle rehabilitation in improving joint health and metabolic balance. The potential for myokine modulation through targeted exercise and weight loss interventions to mitigate the adverse effects of obesity and OA is also discussed, suggesting avenues for future research and therapy development to reduce the burden of these chronic conditions
Nutrition in Chronic Kidney Disease—The Role of Proteins and Specific Diets
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health burden, needing comprehensive management for preventing and delaying the progression to advanced CKD. The role of nutritional therapy as a strategy to slow CKD progression and uremia has been recommended for more than a century. Although a consistent body of evidence suggest a benefit of protein restriction therapy, patients’ adherence and compliance have to be considered when prescribing nutritional therapy in advanced CKD patients. Therefore, these prescriptions need to be individualized since some patients may prefer to enjoy their food without restriction, despite knowing the potential importance of dietary therapy in reducing uremic manifestations, maintaining protein-energy status
James Joyce and alcoholism
This paper will zoom-in upon one of the greatest modernist writers and influential figures of the twentieth century, James Joyce. In this way, following his life’s developments, from his troubled childhood to his frantic life abroad with Nora Barnacle, his literary work and his inspirational sources, we will try to establish whether alcohol consumption hindered or aided his creative process. In order to do so, this article will present events that might have triggered the drinking, the rituals and ‘customs’ of the process, as they seem to be in some kind of interrelation. These facts will be rendered while using close textual analyses of his literary works in the context of addiction
