    Adrian Morris [Review]

    No full text
During his lifetime Adrian Morris (1929–2004) had one major exhibition. In 1978 as part of the Hayward Annual he was given a room. He had been invited by the artist Liliane Lijn to show sixteen of his paintings. She was the instigator and one of the five selectors of the exhibition, all importantly women, who had come together to redress the persistent institutional bias against female artists in Britain at the time. Morris along with five other male artists were, somewhat surprisingly, included in the exhibition, each representing what was referred to as a ‘marginal position’, and each included to open up the exhibition from segregated readings. Many of the paintings Adrian Morris exhibited at the Hayward Gallery, London, together with others that have been gathered for the first time, are now hanging in the Gallery Neu, Berlin. Review of the exhibition: Adrian Morris, works 1956 – 2004: a selection by Tenzing, Barshee, Galerie Neu, Berlin. 15th March–13th April 201

    Brief History of Morris Canal

A fishing trip on Lake Hopstcong provided George Maccullochwith an idea. From his vantage point he gazed eastward and noticed that the land sloped down and away as far as he could see. He also noticed that the land west of where he was standing sloped toward the Delaware River. Aware that the lake stood on higher ground, he began to wonder if a canal could be built, that would be fed by Lake Hopatcong that would connect Pennsylvania's coal fields with Morris County So the idea of the Morris Canal was born. Later the canal was expanded to Newark in 1831 and finally to Jersey City in 1836,Original file name Collage.jp

English author, designer, manufacturer, and artist William Morris (1834-1896) is best known for his association with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and as a central figure of the English Arts and Crafts Movement. He was influential in the emergence of socialism in England in the nineteenth century, having founded the Socialist League in 1884. Morris's more well known works include The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems (1858), The Earthly Paradise (18681870), A Dream of John Ball (1892) and News from Nowhere (1893). In 1891, Morris founded the Kelmscott Press, which produced books modeled after fifteenth-century incunabula. The press produced 53 titles during its 7-year operation. His 1896 edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, called the Kelmscott Chaucer, is often regarded a pinnacle of book design. The collection includes correspondence from Sydney Cockerell, Jane Morris, and William Morris, a manuscript of poetry by Stopford Augustus Brooke, and nine reels of microfilm of the British Library's William Morris papers

View of the Morris Canal In Jersey City

The extension of the Morris Canal into Jersey City at Little Basin from Newark was completed in 1836. As the canal's eastern terminus, it linked Jersey City to the anthracite coal, or "black gold" fields, of northeastern Pennsylvania that arrived on flat-bottomed boats for the city's industrial development. Today the Morris runs through the northern end of Liberty State Park. It is a recreational pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists along the former route as well as access to New York Harbor for the many private yachts and boats docked at the marinas along the Hudson River.Original file name 231 Jersey City along the Morris Canal.jp
