The Future Architecture of the EU’s Return System Following the Pact on Asylum and Migration: Added Value and Shortcomings
Get PDFThis chapter argues that while the Pact has remedied some of the shortcomings in the 2018 Commission proposal for the Recast of the Return Directive (‘2018 Proposal’), in particular a more humane return border procedure, the improvements are not sufficient given the low bar set by the 2018 Proposal. Moreover, the diminished judicial control, weakened right to asylum, policy fragmentation and questionable efficiency of the return system, as envisaged by the Pact, are challenges that need to be addressed

From Postmodern Intertextuality to “Decomposed Theater”: Matei Vișniec between Romanian and Francophone Literatures
No full textEngaging with the dramatic work of Francophone Romanian writer Matei Vișniec, in particular with his post–Cold War participation in the European network of the theater of the absurd, I focus, chiefly in this chapter’s second half, on the author’s intertextual dialogue with another kindred spirit, Romanian-French author Eugen Ionescu (Eugène Ionesco). Because I do so over and against the linguistic and cultural-historical backdrop of France’s highly consequential presence in East European countries such as Romania throughout modernity, I lead off with an overview of the French influence in Romania, especially in Romanian literary history. As I will briefly show, French language and culture have over the past two centuries or so appealed considerably to Romanian writers, critics, artists, philosophers, and politicians, in effect, to entire social categories including but not limited to the intellectual class, before and after Vișniec’s own generation. Playwright, poet, and novelist, Vișniec was born in Romania but has been living for more than three decades in Paris. After years of systematic harassment by Communist censorship, he left his native land and asked for political asylum in France, whose citizen he became in 1993. What made his name well known in French cultural circles, as well as elsewhere in the world, was first of all his dramatic work, which has been published and performed in Paris and other places, inside and outside France, including the Off d’Avignon Festival. Currently the Romanian dramatist who has been translated and staged the most in recent decades worldwide, as well as the living Francophone Romanian writer most appreciated in the French-speaking world, he became, since his relocation to France, entirely bilingual and bicultural. Yet again, this career reset is hardly unusual for modern Romanian authors, whose fascination with French culture has been so powerful that they have often moved to France and have adopted, sometimes with worldwide success, French as their language of expression

A new class of control structures for heterogeneous reactive distillation processes
No full textThere are only a handful of process control structures applied to the neat operation of both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactive distillation, for two-reactants / two-products one-reaction systems. All of these control structures employ inferential temperature control (or concentration analyzers) at some location in the column to balance the reaction stoichiometry. This original study proposes a new class of control structures applicable to heterogeneous reactive distillation. The novel idea, common to all control structures, is based on monitoring the inventory of the reactant involved in the heterogeneous azeotrope. The organic reflux (or the organic reflux / aqueous distillate ratio) is used to detect the excess or deficiency of the reactant, based on which the fresh feed rate is adjusted such that the reaction stoichiometry is balanced. This control philosophy is simple and easy to implement in different ways as illustrated by several case studies. The performance of the proposed control structures depends on the system studied. For some systems, the performance is better, as good or nearly as good as that of the literature control structures. Design and control of novel reaction–separation–recycle processes for the production of 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate
No full textTwo chemistry routes are known for 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate production: the direct esterification of acrylic acid with 1,4-butanediol, and the transesterification of methyl acrylate with 1,4-butanediol. However, very scarce information in the literature is available about industrial production, or design and operation of production processes. In this study, we propose three novel reaction–separation–recycle processes for 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate production by direct esterification based on solid catalyst. Use of solid catalysts may avoid well-known issues of the liquid catalysts like recovery and re-use of the catalyst, difficult product recovery, and corrosion. Due to the nature of the chemical system and reactions conditions, the chemistry is not 100% selective towards the acrylate, important amounts of diacrylate by-product being formed. All processes use fixed-bed tubular reactors to perform the reactions and distillation-based equipment to achieve the required separations. While all processes have a similar separation sequence, each has its key particularities: the RSR-A process accepts the loss of reactants due to formation and elimination from the process of the diacrylate, RSR-B converts the diacrylate into its reactants in the esterification reactor, while RSR-C converts the diacrylate in a dedicated hydrolysis reactor. A key element in the separation sequence is the use of pressure-swing distillation to make the difficult split of the alcohol/acrylate/diacrylate ternary mixture. All processes are capital and energy intensive. The economic analysis shows that the RSR-A process has the most favorable economics: a total annualized cost of 2 million /t of product. Validating Definitional Interpreters Using Property-Based Testing
No full textThis paper presents an evaluation of different generation methods of input expressions to definitional interpreters. We compare three different ways of generating expressions of a specified algebraic data type. The approaches that we describe are QuickCheck, SmallCheck and a uniform generation technique, as laid out in their original papers. Subsequently, we illustrate some of the advantages and pitfalls that ought to be considered when using each of the aforementioned approaches. Experimental evaluation shows that the uniform generation method can provide promising results at the expense of time. Compared with this, the QuickCheck and SmallCheck off-the-shelf generation methods are time-efficient, yet lack precision when it comes to generating well-typed terms.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin
