Volume5/1991_March08UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER PULSE March 8, 1991 UH\u27s Veteran Staffers Recognized for Loyal Service Two hundred fourteen UH employ-ees, who have cumulatively logged 1,860 years of work, were honored last week at University Hospital\u27s annual Service Awards Banquet. Among the evening\u27s honorees was Corine Bridgewaters, Social Work, who has worked more than three decades at the Hospital. Thirteen individuals celebrated their silver anniversaries at UH. One of them, Jan Bair, director of Pharmacy Services, said during brief remarks, " It\u27s the people... that make this organization." Reminiscing on some of the friendships he has forged during his tenure here, he added, " We have one of the best and most efficient organizations in the coun-try." Rosa Key, Business Office, another 25- year veteran, explained how she came to work here. With two job offers- one from UH and the other from Holiday Inn- it boiled down to an appendicitis attack that forced her to take the job with the later starting date. Ralph Stevens, Facilities and Engineering, was congratulated on his use of only a single sick day during his 25 years at the Hospital. The climax of the evening came with the announcement of the Hospital\u27s 1990 Employee of the Year. The honor went to two staffers: Debra L. Taylor, Quality Assurance, and Mark Fitches, Nutrition Care Services. Taylor is described by her supervi-sor as someone always eager to learn and attain new skills. " Debra\u27s attitude demonstrates care and concern for the patient as the benefici-ary of quality efforts. She is a dedicated and loyal employee." Last year Taylor served as acting director of the department while a new department head was being recruited. She serves on a number of Hospital committees and has been active in the Utah chapter of the American Diabetes Association. Fitches is the Hospital\u27s executive chef and his culinary masterpieces have graced numerous affairs including Hospital Board luncheons, State Fair cooking competitions and special development programs. Fitches is currently working toward classification as " Master Chef," an American Culinary Institute designa-tion held by very few chefs in the country. Fitches\u27 service director says, " At times he has been down 30 percent of his staff. He just pitches in and works until all is done." Taylor and Fitches were two of five finalists for the Employee of the Year honor. They both received a 200savingsbondandaplaque.TheotherthreefinalistswereHelenOpenshaw,BusinessOffice;FredRiemer,RespiratoryCare;andKeithHoward,EnvironmentalServices.Insalutingtheemployeesatthebanquet,GeorgeW.Belsey,UHexecutivedirector,congratulatedthemontheirlongtermcommitmenttotheHospital."Suchlongevityonthejobisanimpressiveachievement,"hesaid,"intoday2˘7sworldwherejobhoppingandmultiplecareerchangesaretherule."MayWeConnectYou?INFOFAIR2˘791Connectionsforthe2˘790sThursday,April4EcclesLibraryEmployeesoftheYear:MarkFitchesandDebraTaylor.CorineBridgewatersJanBairSERVICEAWARDS30YearsCorineBridgewatersSocialWork25YearsMerlaAshton2SouthJanBairPharmacyKyokoBlackEnvironmentalServicesRayHagenFacilitiesandEngineeringPamHowarthRecoveryRoomRosaKeyBusinessOfficeGordonLeePharmacyRalphStevensFacilitiesandEngineeringYoshikoSugiyama4NorthAlanTuckerEnvironmentalServicesCurtisWestonEnvironmentalServicesRuthWinterfeldFinancialReviewServicesJudithWorkmanRecoveryRoom20YearsKennethBellEnvironmentalServicesJuanitaBurtonAmbulatoryCareJamesMcNamaraSocialWorkPamelaMullinsMICU/CCUCarolSmithLaborandDeliveryA1TokunagaMedicalRecords15YearsDianeBedell2SouthGeraldineBlakelyRespiratoryTherapyJoanByrdMedicalRecordsGraceCrithfield6SouthConneDrenkerRehabilitationAndreaGasparNursingAdministrationPriscillaGibbsRadiologyJeffreyHeningerEnvironmentalServicesKarenHillierRespiratoryTherapyKayHolmesBurnUnitBadaweKhaderPharmacyDianeKiuhara5NorthEleanorLangeDataServicesJuneLangfordEnvironmentalServicesJohnLeeFacilitiesandEngineeringGaryMcAfeeFacilitiesandEngineeringHelenOpenshawCreditFredPrestonFacilitiesandEngineeringPamProctorEmergencyDepartmentMaryRenfroCentralSupplyLindaRyersonMedicalRecordsBernieSchmertzInformationSystemsJanetSharpRehabLyleStevensFacilitiesandEngineeringGenevieveTurvilleLinenServices10YearsLisaAndersonNursingConnieBaker2SouthJacquelineBlackCreditandCollectionsRichardChristensenFacilitiesandEngineeringColleenDilleNursingLyndaDorrellDataServicesRodneyEvansEnvironmentalServicesRichardFullmerAdministrationDanielGarzarelliFacilitiesandEngineeringJoanHillBusinessOfficeMaryHowardCentralSupplyCynthiaJaenschRadiologyRuthJamesNutritionCareServicesDianeJohnstonRadiologyGeorgetteLoveNursingJoeMartyPathologyRobertMertesEnvironmentalServicesAngelaMcKenzieRadiologyRobertMongePathologyMelanieMoserBusinessOfficeRhondaNeimanOperatingRoomBryantNunleyFacilitiesandEngineeringGeorgeOlsenNutritionCareServicesWilliamProvostFacilitiesandEngineeringRaymondRubioPurchasingMarthaSalvadorRehabilitationKennethShifrarPharmacyPatSineCardiologyMichelleSmithCentralSupplyPriscillaSparksRehabilitationDebraSt.ClairSICUDuaneStokerEnvironmentalServicesKeithTaylorRespiratoryTherapyKathleenWright2NorthCarolZuckermanAmbulatoryCare5YearsRichardAlexanderDevelopmentPhyllisBachusOperatingRoomDarleneBarberBusinessOfficeCharleneBarrettMICUMardiBartholdt5EastLoriBedontAdministrationBarbaraBorschelOperatingRoomPaulaBowenAccountingJohnBowersEnvironmentalServicesWilliamBrackettOperatingRoomMathewBradfordMedicalRecordsJackBradshawFacilitiesandEngineeringSarahBrooksInformationSystemsMarciaBrydsonCardiologyIleneCarelton6SouthTomCarrollMedicalRecordsMaryCarrollSmithMICUCecileChristiansenFinancialReviewServicesJackieCornishPharmacyWalterCrawfordRadiologySueDallingMedicalRecordsPollyDarlingRadiologySERVICEAWARDSHollyDelgattiAmbulatoryCareBarbaraDeSantis5EastJohnDodsFacilitiesandEngineeringSusanDunnEnvironmentalServicesLauraEarleyRadiologyRexEnglandFacilitiesandEngineeringMarkEngledowNutritionCareServicesDiannFerrisRadiologyPatriciaFidoneAmbulatorySurgeryDavidFrankFacilitiesandEngineeringMelanieFullerLaborandDeliveryDavidGarciaEnvironmentalServicesJoeGarciaEnvironmentalServicesBarbaraGelegotisNBICUJanetteGlassRehabilitationMerleneGloverBusinessOfficeLoriGomezBurnUnitDavidGreenAirMedJoanHadley5EastEvelynHartiganAdministrationJaniceHarvey5WestLillianHenrieNursingDaveHensonFacilitiesandEngineeringSusanHeroffAmbulatoryCareWilliamHoltAmbulatoryCareDebraIsgriggNBICUCoraJensenAmbulatoryCareSanfordJonesOperatingRoomKevinJonesOperatingRoomLisaKaplan6SouthJolynneKeepMedicalRecordsLyndaKeiskerNCCCarolynKenerOperatingRoomJonKennedyFacilitiesandEngineeringBahramKhialFacilitiesandEngineeringSiamakKhialFacilitiesandEngineeringJudithKiernanNursingCatherineKoerAmbulatorySurgeryRuthLarsenNursingLauriLee4NorthMichelleLeiterRehabFayeLincolnHomeHealthCareHeatherLockhartTelecommunicationsRahelehMatinkhahNutritionCareServicesCarolynMayfieldMICUKristinaMcAfeeMedicalRecordsDebraMedinaCreditandCollectionsBrentMonahanAmbulatoryCareVenitaMorganEnvironmentalServicesPamelaMorrisonRehabilitationMichaelMorrisonFacilitiesandEngineeringSadieMoyaEnvironmentalServicesDebraMylarRehabilitationHowardNashFacilitiesandEngineeringCindyNicholsPersonnelMaxilynNicholson5EastRoyOffermanCentralSupplyKathyOlesonNursingGraceOlmstedEnvironmentalServicesMabelOrzolMedicalRecordsKeithPerryFacilitiesandEngineeringDarlenePickrellPathologyKarenPinoFinancialReviewServicesE.AnnPosNBICUPatriciaPotterNutritionCareServicesNikolePoulsenNBICUKathyPulusoOkutsuSocialWorkDonna N. who loves a good aria. In fact this new member of UH\u27s psychiatric unit is as comfortable with a microphone as she is with a stethoscope. Mori recently moved to Salt Lake City from San Francisco, where she was a nurse during the day and an opera singer at night. For nearly 30 years, Mori sang with the San Francisco Opera Company. Nursing and opera both fill her needs, she says. Though she " found peace in caring for others," opera served as a stress release from the hospital environment. " Exhilirating things happen on stage," she says. Even after a full day on a unit, another eight hours on the stage passed quickly. " You would be so lost in the glorious music." During her tenure with the opera company, Mori ( using the stage name Spiropoulos) sang every part possible and performed in more than 400 operas. When she moved, the com-pany presented her with a lifetime stage door pass and welcomed her to return and sing any time she wishes. A dramatic soprano, Mori adores Wagner operas and says " Turandot" is her favorite. In the height of her opera career, she traveled the world performing ( and doing nursing work). Her voice has graced stages in the Philippines, Athens, Florence, Venice and Frankfurt. And her health- care skills have been put to use in Russia, India and Southeast Asia. The grandeur of opera has been very gratifying, but so has the quiet work with patients. One of her most satisfying moments as a nurse was a year she spent caring for five AIDS babies in her home- part of a California pilot project. " The idea was to give them all the love and care you can at home." Though she describes that year as exhausting, she grew very close to those youngsters and still keeps in close contact with them. Mori says she is slowing her pace a bit, however, she already has been approached by the Utah Opera Go Hand- in- Hand Kamona Mori Company about joining in several local productions. Mori also is giving private voice lessons. Unused, the voice loses ground fast, she says. And though she has two very different approaches, Mori has found that making people feel good makes her happy. Nutrition Fruition Did you know that... • 48 million Americans are dieting. • 97 percent of those who lose weight regain it within one year. • Adding soluble fiber to your diet may help lower your blood choles-terol level. • Dietary fiber is found only in plant foods. • Vitamin pills won\u27t give you energy. Energy comes from calories in food. March is National Nutrition Month. The 1991 theme, " Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle," stresses long- term benefits of a healthful diet and regular exercise. If you\u27d like more informa-tion on how to revamp your diet, call Lorraine Merrill, R. D., Nutrition Care Services, x 1- 2462. Eggs- cellent Easter Gifts The Easter Bunny ( a. k. a. the Hospital Auxiliary) will be selling tempting personalized chocolate Easter eggs and flowers Friday, March 29, 9 a. m.- l p. m, on the first floor bridge. Simplot Company ( Idaho) employee, was burned on the job Feb. 14, when he attempted to clear an outlet valve in an acid containment area. Ward underwent excision and skin grafting of his 20 percent total body surface area acid burns on Feb. 21- 22, with donor skin taken from his hip and thigh to cover his lower extremi-ties. Ward and Barfus were introduced a year and a half ago by mutual friends-" match- makers." Both were attending Idaho State University at that time. Ward was divorced and raising four sons; Barfus was wid-owed and raising two children. She admired the way Ward and his sons " explore the world together" and thought they were very close. The couple planned to be married the end of August; however, because Ward needs someone with him following discharge this week, they moved up the date. Ward\u27s and Barfus\u27 children attended the ceremony, along with her parents and other family members from Idaho. Intermountain Burn Center Associate Director Stephen E. Morris, M. D., not only performed the skin grafts on Ward, but also played " The Wedding March" for the ceremony. Carol Wilstead, mother of two Bum Center staff, baked a three-tiered wedding cake. Flowers were donated by Ensign Wholesale Florist. Judge Michael Hutchins performed the ceremony. Marilyn Groussman, Burn Center social worker who coordinated the event, said, " We see such heartbreak here- this is a very happy scene."
