No full textAn oral history was conducted with Mrs. Anh Dang, born in 1961 in Vinh Long, Vietnam. The interview focused on her childhood in Saigon, her experiences as a student during the Vietnam War and life after the collapse of South Vietnam. She discusses the hardships she endured after 1975, including the imprisonment of both of her parents and the inability to further her education. She also describes her escape by boat and journey through refugee camps in Hong Kong and the Philippines. Mrs. Anh Dang is now a test operator at a company called EMI and currently lives in Garden Grove with her husband and two daughters.Recorded Digitall

Anh Dang Interview
No full textAnh Dang (Class of 2021) was interviewed by Keeana Esmaeeli via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on June 22, 2021. She was born in Richardson, Texas and raised in Plano, where she lived with her parents and siblings. Ms. Dang and her twin sister, Chi (who also attended SMU), led an active lifestyle at school and participated in many extracurricular activities. For most of her upbringing, she participated in club volleyball, which she continued to be involved with while at SMU. Ms. Dang decided to attend SMU after being given the chance to experience a day in the life of a student in the Residential Commons. She was also selected to be a President's Scholar, and was grateful for the academic support and resources (particularly the advisors) that she received through the President's Scholar program. These resources led to one of her most exciting opportunities during undergrad: a summer study-abroad program in Europe. While at SMU, Ms. Dang double-majored in Biochemistry and Management, and participated in several multicultural organizations, including Asian Council and the Vietnamese Student Association. These gave her avenues through which she made many of her closest friends while further exploring and appreciating her Vietnamese culture. At the time of the interview, Ms. Dang was preparing to attend medical school at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine

This collection includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with Asian Americans native to or living in Houston.Thieu Dang was born in Nam Định, Vietnam. As a child, he moved to Saigon, South Vietnam to live with his aunt and uncle amidst conflicts the First Indochina War and later on the Vietnam War. Dr. Dang studied agriculture at both the University of Saigon and the University of Florida and later became a professor at the University of Saigon. He eventually fled Vietnam as a refugee, living in a refugee camp in Galang, Indonesia before settling in the United States. Dr. Dang worked in law enforcement with both the Houston Police Department and the FBI

No full textQuynh-Chi Dang (Class of 2021) was interviewed by Keeana Esmaeeli via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on June 14, 2021. She was born and raised in Richardson, Texas and Plano, Texas, where she lived with her parents and siblings. Ms. Dang describes growing up in a very diverse environment, but recalls having felt a less holistic and positive connection to her culture as a Vietnamese-American. Growing up, she led a very active and busy life, balancing the academic responsibilities she had at school with her club volleyball schedule. At SMU, Ms. Dang took on a rigorous academic schedule, double majoring in Biochemistry and Spanish, and later took on an American History minor. She was also active outside of her academics, and joined the SMU Club Volleyball team, Alpha Epsilon Delta (the Pre-Med honor society), and the Vietnamese Student Association. The VSA was an instrumental part of her time at SMU, as it not only brought her together with some of her closest friends, but also helped her to fully embrace and explore aspects of her Vietnamese culture, and gain a greater appreciation for it. During her interview, Ms. Dang also describes a major example of racism she endured in a classroom. She graduated from SMU in 2021, and at the time of the interview was preparing for her first year as a medical student at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas
