ACTIVE BREAKS TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN PRIMARY SCHOOL:EVALUATION OF PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS
Aggression and sport: A cross-sectional study on behavioral tendencies of athletes
This cross-sectional study aimed to measure aggression in a more heterogeneous population of athletes, with the purpose of determining whether some specific conditions are related to aggressive behaviour. Athletes of 18-64 years old were enrolled in the study. The Italian version of Buss Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) was self-administered. A total of 390 questionnaires were collected. Males showed higher levels of physical aggression (19.58 +/- 6.32) than females (15.69 +/- 6.65), p < 0.001 and a significant reduction in all domains of the questionnaire with advancing age, except for physical aggression. Furthermore, subjects who practiced full contact sports showed higher levels of physical aggression (20.23 +/- 6.68) than those who practiced partial contact (17.89 +/- 5.86) or non-contact sports (17.19 +/- 6.64) p < 0.006. Finally, those who have played competitively in the past showed lower levels of anger (14.95 +/- 5.22) than those who have played amateurishly (16.05 +/- 5.54), p < 0.05. Age and gender appeared to be significant in aggression scores. Martial artists and combat sports players showed significantly higher levels of physical aggression than those who practice partial contact or non-contact sports. The type of sport (individual or team players), the practice time (beginners or experts) and the current level of sport (amateurs or competitive players) did not affect the aggression scores. Instead, the past level of sport participation is correlated with current anger
Diagnosis of Leprosy In A Nigerian Migrant: Implementation Of Surveillance Measures in the Current Migration Context
Background. In Italy, leprosy diagnosis is reported in immigrants from endemic countries or Italians who have stayed in endemic areas. We report the first leprosy case to be observed in a migrant from Nigeria in the Rimini district (Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy). Methods. After describing the tasks of the various health Institutions in the Italian integrated system for diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of leprosy, we describe the management and outcomes of the leprosy case and of the patient's contacts. Results. In April 2017, Multibacillary Lepromatose Leprosy was diagnosed in a 29-year-old Nigerian man who arrived in Rimini in July 2014 after a 2-year stay in Libya. The local Public Health Service implemented the epidemiological investigation and identified the patient's close contacts. The management of the case and the surveillance of the 13 identified contacts, 7 Italians and 6 migrants, highlighted some critical issues. The late diagnosis of the case, due to the lack of knowledge of exotic diseases by general practitioners and other health and social professionals, and the loss at follow up of the close contacts (5 out of 6 migrants), represented important obstacles to the full success of surveillance measures. Conclusions. Although in Italy there is a well codified system of notification and surveillance of leprosy, the recognising of cases and the tracing and follow up of contacts are made difficult by the particular conditions of the involved people. This represents a new challenge for the Italian Public Health Authorities which, in the current context of immigration, often uncontrolled, must know how to respond to the new needs, in close collaboration with the State Institutions responsible for registering migrants and those health and social professionals who could facilitate the access of foreign people to health services
Management of a family outbreak of scabies with high risk of spread to other community and hospital facilities
BACKGROUND:
In developed countries, scabies is observed sporadically or as institutional outbreaks in hospitals and other health facilities. In the family context, outbreaks generally involve a limited number of cases.
METHODS:
A local health authority in Emilia-Romagna (Northern Italy) carried out an epidemiologic investigation on a family outbreak of scabies that included an unusually high number of cases. Its possible connection with a nosocomial case in a long-term care facility (LTCF) and outbreak management are discussed.
RESULTS:
Among the household members, 8 confirmed cases occurred (attack rate, 87.5%). Another case was reported in a patient of an LTCF where one of the family cases worked as a sociosanitary operator. In total, 244 contacts were placed under surveillance. The control strategy focused on a mass information campaign addressed to all contacts and the training of health care personnel. In addition, specific prophylaxis (permethrin 5%) was performed in 108 high-risk contacts and LTCF patients and staff.
CONCLUSIONS:
The control measures were successful in preventing the spread of the outbreak. However, misdiagnosis and the tendency of people to hide the symptoms caused the late recognition and underestimation of the cases, contributing to delayed control measures and increasing the economic and human resources required for outbreak management
Benefits of an adapted physical activity program in terms of mobility, balance and quality of life in patients with parkinson disease
BENEFITS OF AN ADAPTED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROGRAM IN TERMS OF MOBILITY, BALANCE AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN PATIENTS WITH PARKINSON DISEASE
Active breaks in primary school: Teacher awareness
The need for movement, which characterizes the current generations of children, has become urgent and worrying. Despite the continuous projects carried out in primary school, few seems to improve health and motivation to adopt active lifestyles. Among the many projects carried out in recent years, active breaks seem to be gaining ground for their easiness of realization and sustainability over time. The active breaks proved to be very effective towards well being and cognitive activation representing an additional dose of physical activity that can help children in meeting the recommended levels of daily physical activity. Moreover, the active breaks represent an innovative strategy to improve the classroom climate and facilitate the educational action of teachers. Teachers, involved in the I-MOVE and ABS studies, of an inter-university study group (University of Bologna and University of Roma Tre), responded with great enthusiasm to the practice of active breaks. Teachers highlighted that active break produced a positive effect toward school routine, learning environment and activation of cognitive functions in children. The present paper reports data related to the awareness of teachers, with regard to the application of active breaks in their school day, in terms of feasibility, management and organization in the face of effects considered absolutely positive for the daily school experience
A cross-sectional analysis between physical activity levels, weight status and empathy-related behaviors in a sample of Tuscany primary school children
BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical activity (PA) and the development of relational empathy skills in children, taking into account weight status. METHODS: Parents/guardians of primary school children were involved in filling out a questionnaire: the Empathy Questionnaire (EmQue-I13) and children were asked to complete the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C) to investigate the self -reported PA levels. The weight status was assessed using a self -reported Body Mass Index (BMI). RESULTS: Three hundred seventy parents or guardians of students who attended primary school (8.53 +/- 1.61 yrs) were recruited. The total score was 2.41 +/- 0.89 for PAQ-C and 41.17 +/- 6.32 for EmQue-I13. The three domains of EmQue-I13 were: contagion (8.16 +/- 2.67), attention to others' feelings (19.40 +/- 2.99) and prosocial actions (13.62 +/- 3.01). Linear regression models showed that a higher PAQ-C score was positively associated with empathy -related total score P<0.000. Weight status, age and gender were not associated with EmQue-I13. CONCLUSIONS: Our results underline the positive association between physical activity and the development of relational empathic skills
