    Density-functional theory of macroscopic stress - gradient -corrected calculations for crystalline Se

    We generalize the Nielsen-Martin stress theorem beyond the local-density approximation (LDA) and present an alternative derivation of the whole theorem. We show that the exchange-correlation stress becomes anisotropic in the most general case: its explicit form is given within a gradient-corrected (GC) scheme. As a test implementation, we use the generalized theorem to achieve fast structural optimization in crystalline Se. In this material LDA predicts a rather poor structure. Our GC calculation is in much better agreement with the experiment

In verband met duurzaamheid van het materiaal, is ervoor gekozen om verder onderzoek te verrichten naar GC-elementen van kunststof. Dit onderzoek is gedaan door een drietal studenten van de TU Delft aan de faculteit Civiele Techniek.     Gold nanoparticles capped by a GC-containing peptide functionalized with an RGD motif for integrin targeting

    Gold nanoparticles were obtained by reduction of a tetrachloroaurate aqueous solution in the presence of a RGD-(GC)2 peptide as stabilizer. As comparison, the behavior of the (GC)2 peptide has been studied. The (GC)2 and RGD-(GC)2 peptides were prepared ad hoc by Fmoc synthesis. The colloidal systems have been characterized by UV–visible, TGA, ATR-FTIR, mono and bidimensional NMR techniques, confocal and transmission (TEM) microscopy, ζ-potential, and light scattering measurements. The efficient cellular uptake of Au-RGD-(GC)2 and Au-(GC)2 stabilized gold nanoparticles into U87 cells (human glioblastoma cells) were investigated by confocal microscopy and compared with the behavior of (GC)2 capped gold nanoparticles. A quantitative determination of the nanoparticles taken up has been carried out by measuring the pixel brightness of the images, a measure that highlighted the importance of the RGD termination of the peptide. Insight in the cellular uptake mechanism was investigated by TEM microscopy. Various important evidences indicated the selective uptake of RGD-(GC)2 gold nanoparticles into the nucleus

    Canadians expect the same access to health care whether they are rich or poor, and wherever they live, often without direct charge at the point of service. However, we find that the private cost of long-term care differs greatly across the country, and within provinces, we find substantial variation, depending on income level, marital status, and, in Quebec alone, on assets owned. A non-married person with average income would pay more than twice as much in the Atlantic provinces as in Quebec, while a couple with one in care would pay almost four times as much in Newfoundland as in Alberta.long-term care, private cost

    Dit rapport is een aanvulling op het eindverslag van het onderzoek naar het gedrag van kunststof GC elementen voor oever- en bodembescherming. Conclusies van dat (schaal-) onderzoek waren dat een structuur van GC elementen verrassend sterke hydraulische eigenschappen bezit en daarmee interessant is als erosiebeschermer bij bodem en oeverconstructies. Beperking in het gebruik lag bij \u93stabiliteit\u94. Onder sterke stroming of golfslag was het pakket onvoldoende stabiel. Zo werden er onder zeer sterke stroming flarden uit getrokken, of bewoog het pakket enigszins onder golfslag op een talud. Er werden verschillende kunststoffen gebruikt, met verschillende soortelijke gewichten. Uit extrapolatie en precieze bestudering van het bezwijken kon verwacht worden dat gebruik van sterkere GC\u92s (minder elastisch) en zwaardere GC\u92s (stabieler) het bereik waarin de GC gebruikt kan worden aanzienlijk zou moeten kunnen vergroten

    Missense mutations in the GUCA1A gene encoding guanylate cyclase-activating protein 1 (GCAP1) are associated with autosomal dominant&nbsp;cone/cone-rod (CORD) dystrophies. The nature of the inheritance pattern implies that a pool of normal GCAP proteins is present in photoreceptors together with the mutated variant. To assess whether human GCAP1 and GCAP2 may similarly regulate the activity of the retinal membrane guanylate cyclase GC-1 (GC-E) in the presence of the recently discovered E111V-GCAP1 CORD-variant, we combined biochemical and in silico assays. Surprisingly, human GCAP2 does not activate GC1 over the physiological range of Ca2+ whereas wild-type GCAP1 significantly attenuates the dysregulation of GC1 induced by E111V-GCAP1. Simulation of the phototransduction cascade in a well-characterized murine system, where GCAP2 is able to activate the GC1, suggests that both GCAPs can act in a synergic manner to mitigate the effects of the CORD-mutation. We propose the existence of a species-dependent compensatory mechanism. In murine photoreceptors, slight increases of wild-type GCAPs levels may significantly attenuate the increase in intracellular Ca2+ and cGMP induced by E111V-GCAP1 in heterozygous conditions. In humans, however, the excess of wild-type GCAP1 may only partly attenuate the mutant-induced dysregulation of cGMP signaling due to the lack of GC1-regulation by GCAP2

    Oblique derivative problems for second order equations of mixed type in multiply connected domains

    In this paper, oblique derivative boundary value problems for second order equations of mixed (elliptic-hyperbolic) type in multiply connected domains is discussed. Firstly the representation of solutions for the above boundary value problem is given, afterwards the uniqueness and existence of solutions of the above problem are stated. In book [1], the author proposed the Dirichlet boundary value problem (Tricomi problem) for second order equations of mixed type in multiply connected domains. In [2, 3], the author only discussed the Dirichlet problem (Tricomi T-2 for the equation u(xx) + sgny u(yy) = 0 in a special doubly connected domain. Up to now we have not seen that other authors have solved it in multiply connected domains.
