No full textIl volume, che raccoglie il lavoro di oltre 50 anni di attività dello studio professionale degli architetti Virginia Galimberti e Antonio Scoccimarro, offre diverse prospettive di lettura e interpretazione. La prima, quella più a distanza, storiografica, che restituisce lo spaccato di un'epoca di grandi e rapide trasformazioni che hanno interessato il nostro paese: da un lato, attraverso gli ondivaghi andamenti del settore delle costruzioni, condizionati dall'avvicendarsi delle coeve politiche economiche e sociali, che sono dichiaratamente inframmezzate nel testo, a sottolineare la dimensione tecnico produttiva e civile del fare architettura. Dall'altro, attraverso la tipologia delle commesse, soprattutto private, che ci raccontano le vicende di un mondo imprenditoriale e di un ceto medio che cambiano la cultura dell'abitare nei territori, ma anche pubbliche dove la scuola e l'Edilizia Residenziale Pubblica rappresentano servizi da implementare e ripensare nei modelli spaziali e costruttivi per rispondere alla domanda di welfare di una società in evoluzione. Sono infatti tipologie di incarichi comuni anche ad altri studi, caratterizzati da una dimensione media, che qui si autodefinisce "artigianale", la cui pratica professionale corrente, ordinaria, rappresenta anche un monito più o meno indiretto per la produzione architettonica recente, più incline alla spettacolarizzazione di alcuni episodici manufatti improntati ad un formalismo autoreferenziale, che al rispondere a bisogni reali e concreti con la massima efficienza a fronte dei vincoli dei contesti normali. È in questa concezione del progetto come servizio, per il cliente o l'utente finale, da portare avanti con impegno e dedizione, indipendentemente dalla scala e dalla portata economica dell'investimento, che risiede un ulteriore apporto rispetto agli approcci correnti, un'occasione di riflessione importante sul senso e il ruolo del progetto nella società soprattutto per le nuove generazioni. La riscoperta di una ideologia, un compito e potenzialità propositivi nei confronti della società e delle istituzioni, ben esplicitati dalla convinzione che la norma abbia un carattere culturale e non meramente coercitivo o di inutile burocratizzazione procedurale, rappresenta un fondamentale contributo a fronte del dilagante atteggiamento critico-vittimistico contemporaneo. Un'attitudine etica che si sostanzia e si rinnova nel tempo anche nella coincidenza fra progetto e ricerca, non solo letteralmente, attraverso la carriera accademica vissuta come occasione di reciproco interscambio e confronto fra studio e attività scientifica e didattica, ma anche nello sviluppo di argomenti specifici attraverso la teoria e la prassi dell'architettura, anche con l'introduzione di alcune riflessioni finali su temi disciplinari rimaste però incompiute

No full textIn the attempt to respond as widely as possible to the housing demand through high-quality low-cost solutions and in a short timeframe, social housing has been characterized, since its beginnings in Italy, by an experimental approach quite different from the more conventional of private housing. It is a story that can be told through famous examples in the history of architecture, but also by isolated or forgotten cases, proving that a very wide and articulated baggage of experimentation, research and studies did not result into a critical evaluation and in the consequent development of intervention models and approaches. This contribution aims at investigating these lesser known ‘stories’ with particular interest in the hard and soft components of the technological dimension, in its integration with the typological concept, framing them in the respective socio-economic and cultural context, highlighting the missed opportunities and, where present, the endogenous and self-referential aspects of the applied innovation, which led to its failure. In particular, with the purpose of determining a geographical limit to the research, the exploration will refer to the Lombardy area, with a preference in the choice of case studies to include different methods of innovation and interrelation with the characteristics of the context. Examples of intervention costs reduction through the rationalization of project and construction production processes, of economies of scale, as well as of prefabrication, of dry assembly systems with high durability and maintainability and of energy saving through the surface to volume ratio control will be portrayed. In conclusion, the essay intends to highlight the recurring structural, regulatory, procedural obstacles to change, and outline possible contemporary research perspectives to respond to low-cost housing demand in terms of innovation of approaches and models rather than of techniques, in light of the current condition and its evolutionary framework
The heteronomy of building technologies in the construction industry in Italy. Notes for a to-do list
Full text linkA pervasive self-referential technique has characterized architecture for some decades, affecting a minor part of architectural production. Celebrated by specialist publications, it has marginally impacted current and ordinary constructions that actually transform the landscape. Addressing the latter production, the essay attempts to define and argue the heteronomous nature of technological change in the national context as a prerequisite for orienting research and design towards the pursuit of a social role of technology, considered a response to the broadest and most widespread demand. This thesis is also underpinned by the discussion of emblematic cases in the history of the Italian construction sector during the post-war period. Finally, starting from a brief outline of the structural factors of change, we intend to provide some operational reflections to rethink the relationship between design and construction

L'esperienza, svolta da novembre 2019 a febbraio 2020 nell'ambito delle attività della Società Scientifica di Tecnologia dell'Architettura, è stata organizzata da un gruppo di lavoro coordinato da Eliana Cangelli, e costituito da Laura Daglio, Federica Ottone, Donatella Radogna, Eugenio Arbizzani, Adolfo F. L. Baratta.

THE EDUCATIONAL ROLE OF LEARNING SPACES FOR SCHOOLS OF ARCHITECTURE. THE CAMPUS BONARDI RENOVATION EXPERIENCE AT POLITECNICO DI MILANO
No full textIn recent years the School of Architecture Campus of Politecnico di Milano has undergone a significant renovation, based on an original concept by Renzo Piano. The process has involved the demolition of buildings constructed over the last 30 years to respond to the growing demand of classrooms and educational spaces triggered by the increased number of the enrolled students, the construction of new facilities, and the requalification and greening of the open spaces to be used as outdoor learning environments, enhancing the presence of the Modernist wings designed by Gio Ponti in the Fifties and Vittoriano Viganò in the Seventies.
This long-lasting construction site adjacent and visible by the simultaneously lived in educational and research spaces, offered the opportunity to organize special seminars during different steps of the works development, to explain the design process with a special focus on detailed architectural design and the relationship with the building process, having the campus renovation as the main case study. Lectures were thus given by the architects and engineers in charge for the design and the construction supervision, held in the site hut with a direct view on the building site, followed by in field visits to see and touch the different activities carried out. The lectures and visits were recorded and are now part of a diverse range of materials to be used for the design of a MOOC aimed at transferring the problems, issues, and the procedures of the construction process from detailed design to the building site activities.
The paper has the aim of reporting the definition of the goals and the methodology especially conceived for the MOOC organization and structuring, which involved the integration of the seminars recordings with, on the one hand, a set of new lectures recordings given by the School academics, focused on selected specific topics, and on the other hand, with the real project drawings and bidding documents as well as with the time lapse shooting of the construction site development, and the creation of bespoke tests and evaluation activities.
Finally, the paper draws conclusions on the use and potentials of online tools and instruments in order to draw students to the direct experience of construction, a fundamental understanding for learning architectural design

No full textThe text has the function of providing a critical introduction to the third part of the book, which is focused on the moment of conceiving the design process, and then investigates the potentials of cognitive, experiential, and design models connected to the new forms of collective/cooperative intelligence for providing a response to the main challenges of the future: to design in a time of “crisis,” in “emergency” conditions, in a state of “scarce resources,” and under conditions of “uncertainty.”
The objective is to probe how the ability to govern decision-making processes is developing – or may be developed in the near future – in what are now structural conditions shaped by the challenges raised here, by recovering the exploratory and creative aspect of the design activity and the dialogue between the different intelligences involved
