The role of the accused in English and Islamic criminal justice
This thesis is a comparative study of the role of the accused in the systems of
English and Islamic criminal justice. It seeks to explore the underlying
relationship between the individual and the state through an historical, structural
and contextual analysis of their rules relating to questioning and of confessions.
The analysis of the English system covers the period 1800 to 1984, with
particular reference to developments during the nineteenth century when the
foundations for the modern English state were established. The analysis of the
Islamic system combines traditionally Islamic and modern methods, assessing the
"Islamisation" movement in Malaysia through a religico-structural understanding
of juristic opinion from the four main schools of Sunnite jurisprudence.
The thesis contributes to existing knowledge on a number of levels: first, it
questions and revises the "myth" of "progress" that has dominated observations
of the history of the English criminal justice system; second, it elucidates the
relationship between Islamic law in theory and the law that is applied and
proposed in its name in Muslim states; third, it provides an analytical framework
for drawing comparisons between the underlying values of the systems of English
and Islamic criminal justice.
While acknowledging fundamental differences in terms of outlook and
articulation, the author concludes there are important similarities expressed
through such notions as "suspect" in the English system and "kafir"I"fasiq" in the
Islamic. These act as intermediate constitutional categories to whom the state
owe less protection. But the author notes also that these similarities are not
observed necessarily in the "law" which is implemented or proposed in Muslim
states; exact correspondence depends upon the over-arching political structure
and the institution of Caliphate.
The thesis is divided into six chapters: chapter one sets out the conventional view
of the historical development of English criminal procedure and evidence;
chapter two subjects that to a critique and chapter three offers a revised thesis.
Chapter four, explores methods for interpreting and explaining Islam; chapter
five sets out rules relating to confessions and questioning according to the four
Sunni schools; chapter six puts them into "context" through an examination of
the "Islamisation" process in Malaysia
Notched Beam Test for SHCC-Concrete Interface
The number of hybrid concrete structures is increasing due to the need for repairing/strengthening existing structures and the development of new hybrid concrete systems. The structural response of these hybrid structures might be governed by the strength of the interface between the two concretes, making it essential to characterize the mechanical response of the interface. In this research, a notch beam tests is proposed to investigate the structural behavior of the interface. Hybrid beams consisting of Strain Hardening Cementitious Composites (SHCC) and conventional concrete are designed with a notch at mid-span and are tested under a four-point bending configuration. The effect of interface treatment (i.e. surface roughness) and the curing condition is tested using two sets of hybrid beams. The first set has three beams which are cured in sealed conditions until the day of testing and the interface is varied between smooth, profiled and roughened. The second set has two beams with smooth interface where one beam is seal cured and the other one is exposed to drying in the laboratory. The opening of the interface is visualized using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and quantified using Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVTDs) during testing of the hybrid beams. It is observed that increasing the roughness of the interface leads to higher load-bearing capacity and controlled opening of the interface. Protective effect of aminoguanidine, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, against carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity in mice
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of aminoguanidine (AG) on carbon tetrachloride (CCU)-induced hepatotoxicity. Treatment of mice with CCU (20 pl/kg, i.p.) resulted in damage to centrilobular regions of the liver, increase in serum aminotransferase and rise in lipid peroxides level 24 hours after CCU administration. Pretreatment of mice with AG (50 mg/kg, i.p.) 30 minutes before CCU was found to protect mice from the CCU-induced hepatic toxicity. This protection was evident from the significant reduction in serum aminotransferase, inhibition of lipid peroxidation and prevention of CCU-induced hepatic necrosis revealed by histopathology. Aminoguanidine, a relatively specific inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase, did not inhibit the in vitro lipid peroxidation. Taken together, these data suggest a potential role of nitric oxide as an important mediator of CCU-induced hepatotoxicity.Corresponding Author:

A GA-ANFIS Self Regulating Scheme for Induction Motor Filter Compensation
Abstract The paper presents a Novel Green Plug-Filter Co mpensation Scheme developed by the Second Author and controlled by an integrated Genetics algorith m (GA) with Adaptive Neuro-Fu zzy Inference System (ANFIS) controller developed by the First Author for gain adjusting of a PID tri-loop stage control scheme applied on single phase Induction motor. A Tri Loop dynamic error controlled technique is used to reduce inrush current conditions, improve energy utilizat ion, ensure soft starting, reduce inrush current as well as effectively ensure motor dynamic speed tacking.The proposed technique is used to adjust the feeding of PWM switching of GP-FC by finding the optimal control gain settings that dynamically minimize the global dynamic error. Digital simu lations are provided to validate the effectiveness of this device in improving the power quality and system stability
Synthesis of non-active electrode (TiO2/GO/Ag) for the photo-electro-Fenton oxidation of micropollutants in wastewater

This paper describes an environmentally friendly approach with the combination of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in less acidic pH, aiming to achieve faster mineralization of a pharmaceutical micropollutant without adding any external oxidants. TiO2/GO/loaded Ag non-active electrodes are synthesized for the degradation of bupropion hydrochloride (antidepressant drug). The present work also seeks the parametric modeling and optimization of hPEF process parameters by using R programming. Nonlinear kinetic modeling was performed for the determination of kinetic parameters. The role of selected process parameters on the mineralization of bupropion was also explained in detail. The OH• and O2•− showed their active participation in the degradation process, while Ag and UV-C played an active role in the disinfection of treated wastewater.Peer reviewe
