Wang Shuo and the commercialisation of contemporary Chinese culture
Get PDFThis thesis examines the commercialisation of Chinese culture that has taken place over the past twenty years in mainland China. It explores the contribution of Wang Shuo, a cultural figure who straddles different fields of culture, moving from literature to the ultimate mass culture medium of television, this study plots Wang Shuo' s development from educational failure, to business failure, to fiction writer, film & TV editor, film director and cultural critic and analyst. His stories, films, TV series and articles have caused shock-waves throughout national cultural circles as he has transformed the terms of the debate from academic discourse to a validation of the role of the market in the culture field. Although Wang Shuo has not been labelled as a dissident, his approach to the culture market has had a more subversive effect on official ideology that those overt dissidents who have had to live in exile or have been imprisoned. He has utilised the language of official ideology to satirise the authorities, turning the ideology and its supporters into figures of fun. Yet his own goals have been strictly personal and economic ones. The authorities recognize the value of Wang Shuo's work in the cultural market but at the same time distrust his works and place him under strict censorship. Examining the way Wang Shuo and people surround him have succeeded in different fields of cultural achievement is a mirror to understanding the process of the transformation of contemporary Chinese culture from a socialist state-controlled culture to a market-oriented mass culture industry

No full textHelina medogensis sp. nov. (Figs. 1–3) Type material: Holotype male, China: Xizang Autonomous Region: Medog County, 960 m, 11.viii. 2003, Coll. M.F. Wang. Paratype: 1 male, same data as holotype. Description: Male: Body length 5.0 mm. Head: Eye bare; frons about 2 / 5 of head width, frontal vitta black on upper half, dark brownish on lower half, 5 strong frontal setae, inserted with 2–3 pairs of small upcurved hairs, 2 upper orbital setae, upcurved, frontoorbital plate and parafacial with silvery gray pollinosity, parafacial about 1 / 2 – 2 / 3 of first flagellomere width; antennal scape and pedicelapex brownish, first flagellomere black, about 2.5 times as long as broad, arista long plumose, the longest hair about 1.5 times as wide as first flagellomere; lower face not projecting, vibrissal angle situated behind frontal angle in profile; genal height about 2 / 7 of eyeheight, gena and genal dilation with black hairs, upper margin of gena with 1–2 rows of upcurved setae; prementum with pruinosity about 2.5 times as long as height; palpus dark brown to black, slender and long. Thorax: Black with densely grayish brown pruinescence, scutum with 4 longitudinal dark stripes in posterior view, the median pairs not reaching to scutoscutellar suture; presutural acr 2 rows, dc 2 + 3, ia 0+ 2, pra about equal to 1 / 2 of posterior notopleural seta in length; notopleuron, lateral and lower margins of scutellum bare; basisternum, proepisternum, anepimeron, katepimeron and meron bare; katepisternal setae 2: 2; anterior spiracle yellowish, posterior one brown. Wing: Tegula and basicosta yellow, costal spine about as long as crossvein rm, vein Sc curved bowlike, radial node bare, veins R 4 + 5 and M conspicuously a little deviated from each other distally, crossvein dmcu straight, crossveins without cloudy appearance. Calypteres yellowish, the lower one projecting tonguelike. Haltere yellow. Legs: Femora and tibiae yellow except for dark fore femur, tarsi black; fore tibia with 1 median p; mid femur with a row of ad on basal 3 / 5 with hairlike av row and with 4 pv setae on basal half; mid tibia with 3 p; hind femur with a complete row of ad, av row sparse and complete, 2 strong setae on apical, pv row comblike, only conspicuous on distal 1 / 3, hind tibia with 3 av, 2 ad, 1 small basal pd. Abdomen: Oval with densly grayish yellow pruinescence; tergites 2 to 5 each with a pair of dark brown pointlike spots. Sternite 1 bare; sternite 5 and terminalia of male as shown in Figs. 1–3. Female: Unknown. The type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Entomology, Shenyang Normal University, Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. Etymology: This species name is derived from the collection locality of the type species. Remarks: This new species closely resembles Helina eurymetopa Emden but differs from it in having parafacial about 1 / 2 – 2 / 3 of flagellomere width; calypters yellowish; mid femur with 4 pv, hind femur with comblike pv row on distal 1 / 3; and abdominal tergite 2 with a pair of dark spots.
