Prediction of glomerular filtration rate from serum concentration of cystatin C: comparison of two analytical methods.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare two methods used to measure serum cystatin C (Cys) and their accuracy to predict glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
METHODS: Three hundred and sixty-seven adult chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with different functional impairments participated in this study. GFR was determined as the renal clearance of (99m)Tc-DTPA. Serum concentrations of cystatin C (SCys) were determined with an immunonephelometric method and with an immunoturbidimetric method.
RESULTS: A very high linear correlation was found between the two measurements of SCys (r = 0.929). The mean difference of SCysTurb-SCysNeph was 0.02 ± 0.43 mg/L (not significant). A high logarithmic correlation was also found between SCys and GFR (r was 0.919 for SCysNeph and 0.937 for SCysTurb). By means of multiple regression analysis, we developed formulae to predict GFR from SCysNeph, SCysTurb and SCr. For comparison, GFR was predicted using published formulae. A good agreement was found between predicted GFR and measured GFR. The results showed that the accuracy of SCysNeph, SCysTurb and SCr and of the different prediction formulae were quite similar.
CONCLUSIONS: The immunoturbidimetric method seems adequate to measure SCys and to predict GFR and its impairment in CKD, at least similar to the immunonephelometric method. The accuracy of SCys and of derived formulae was not higher than that of SCr and SCr-based formulae

Environmental design criteria through geoindicators for two Mediterranean coastlands
This paper examines some interdisciplinary studies that were carried out along the coasts of the Campania region (southern Italy) and the Peloponnese (Greece). The objective of this research is the definition of environmental design criteria for the Mediterranean coasts, using scientific methods in order to identify critical points and devise appropriate instruments. Initially, physical-geographic and geomorphological coastal systems such as beaches, cliffs and technocoasts were defined. Here the concept of geoindicator was introduced taking into account and interpreting tectonic, lithostratigraphic and geomorphologic elements. The geoarcheological structures are also used as useful parameters for the reconstruction of the evolving landscape. Having defined the methodology used to identify the hazard of coast stretches, the parameters were put in relation with the eco-sustainable landscape recovery techniques. To curtail erosion and hydro-geological instability along the urbanized seafront, geoindicators can be employed in the design of transitional environments in relation to the return of the phenomena at different times. The results indicate how the adaptive approach and the non-imposing solutions contribute to reduction of the anthropogenic impacts and environmental hazards in regions where there is a high hazard / risk, and how the safety and stability of the coasts in addition to the quality of the projects can be enhanced
Genesis and evolution of some lagoons in Greece and Italy: preliminary data for a key to geomorphological model interpretation
Geomorphological, stratigraphical and paleoecological surveys as well as historical cartography and bathymetric map analysis of some lagoons carried out along coastland sectors in Greece and Italy, highlighted their complex morphodynamics and paleoenvironmental evolution starting from the Plio-Pleistocene until the present-day. The morphodynamic evolution models of these and others Mediterranean lagoon case studies, also confirmed by paleoecological analysis indicating the presence of brackish to marine with freshwater supply environments, which depict the progressive development of a lagoon in three consecutive environmental phases: a primitive open, then a partially closed and finally a modern closed lagoon with one or more mouths. In the last phase also the morphological changes of the lagoons are mainly due to gradual sediment filling (which may cause the physiographic contraction of the lagoon in a pond) or to rapid overwash phenomena (with the opening of a closed lagoon) as well as to anthropogenic interventions during the last centuries (artificial channel cut, bottom dredging, embankment, pier construction)
