A Brief Overview of H-2 NMR Experiments Used to Study the Phase Biaxiality in Nematic Liquid Crystals
In this paper, some of the most relevant H-2 NMR experiments with the aim of determining the biaxial nature of the nematic phase in several thermotropic liquid crystals are overviewed. Advantages and disadvantages of the technique are discussed. This contribution is an extract of the lecture held in Erice (Sicily) in occasion of the "18th Course - Liquid crystal nanostructures and self-assembling: from organic electronics to metamaterials", the 2nd School of the Italian Liquid Crystal Society
Activity for kids about "food chemistry" at Bright 2015 (night of researchers)
This is a brief report of a didactic activity held in occasion of the Night of Researchers, Edition 2015, at the Dipartimento di Chimica e Chimica Industriale (University of Pisa, Italy). In Tuscany, this European event was called “Bright” and the second edition will be held the next 30th of September 2016. This event has the aim to promote the research and the researchers among the general public, included young people and kids. This paper deals with a didactic activity planned for kids about food chemistry
Teaching liquid crystals to high school students: why and how
Liquid crystals are fascinating materials with peculiar chemical and physical properties and widespread technological applications. However, from the educational point of view, this topic presents a certain level of complexity, and it is usually viewed as challenging by high school teachers. The experiences gained in the last 10 years with high school students during educational laboratories and outreach activities carried out at the University of Pisa were extremely positive in terms of students’ engagement and knowledge achievements. Based on those experiences, a modular and flexible didactic path to introduce liquid crystals was recently proposed to high school teachers covering several themes with a multidisciplinary approach by combining STEM and ‘kitchen chemistry’ laboratories
Order and dynamics of rod-like and banana-shaped liquid crystals by 2H NMR
Deuterium NMR spectroscopy is a very powerful technique for studying partially or totally ordered systems, such as liquid crystals (LCs) and polymers. LCs represent a branch of the most general class of soft materials, with peculiar physical and chemical properties which attracted scientific attention for their potentiality for technological applications. From a chemical point of view, there are three aspects in which (2)H NMR could provide significant insights: (i) the conformational and structural properties; (ii) the molecular dynamics and mobility; and (iii) the orientational order and aggregation/distribution of molecules in the different liquid-crystalline phases. In this work, some of the recent developments in this field are discussed, focusing on two main topics: (1) the molecular dynamics of the smectic liquid-crystalline phases formed by rod-like molecules and (2) the unusual orientational and dynamic properties of the new liquid-crystal line mesophases formed by banana-shaped molecules (BLCs)
Rod-Like and Banana-Shaped Liquid Crystals by means of Deuterium NMR: Molecular structure, orientational ordering and molecular dynamics of complex liquid crystalline materials
The field of liquid crystals (LCs) is for me one of the most fascinating aspects of the Science of Materials, on the other hand, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) represents a very powerful spectroscopy for the large amount of possibilities in performing and projecting new experiments, with the purpose of enlightening both the molecular structure, orientational ordering and dynamics of single molecules. My Ph.D. research mainly focused on investigating the dynamics of thermotropic LCs and the structural and dynamic properties of a new class of LCs called banana-shaped LCs mainly by means of Deuterium (2H) NMR. This work has been awarded by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists - IUPAC (IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - 2006) and by the Italian Society of Chemistry - Division of Physical Chemistry - SCI (Premio Semerano 2005). An invited critical review on this subject has been published in: Valentina Domenici, Pure and Applied Chemistry, 79 (2007) 21-37. Two papers coming from this research work have been awarded ("Otto Lehmann" Prize 2006 and Premio "Primo Levi" 2005)
